Spotify says it removed more than 75 million spammy tracks in the 12 months before September 25, 2025. The measures target deceptive upload tactics and unauthorized identity use while allowing responsible AI-assisted music, with new disclosure and labeling tools expanding in 2026.
What Spotify’s 75 million-track purge means
Spotify’s September 25, 2025 Newsroom announcement says the service removed more than 75 million spammy tracks during the previous 12 months, a period the company associates with the rapid spread of generative-AI tools. Spotify described the purge as a response to content farms, deceptive uploads and attempts to divert royalties.

The number refers to tracks Spotify classified as spammy; it is not a count of all AI-generated songs. Spotify says it does not create or own the music on its service, and that music is licensed with royalties paid according to listener engagement. Its stated position is that music should be treated equally regardless of the tools used to make it.
The three policy changes announced in September 2025
1. Unauthorized vocal impersonation is prohibited
Spotify clarified that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized the use. The rule covers AI voice clones and other unauthorized vocal impersonation, not merely a performer’s use of effects or a soundalike style.

The company also described investment in content-mismatch reviews. Those checks include pre-release reporting and tests with major distributors intended to stop fraudulent deliveries from being placed on another artist’s profile.
2. A spam filter targets manipulative upload patterns
Spotify said a new filter would roll out in fall 2025. It is designed to identify uploaders and tracks associated with tactics such as:
- mass uploads intended to flood the catalog;
- duplicate or near-duplicate tracks;
- search-engine-optimization (SEO) manipulation;
- artificially short tracks; and
- similar schemes that exploit recommendations or royalty accounting.
Flagged material can be tagged and excluded from recommendations. Spotify said the rollout would be conservative and that it would add signals as abuse patterns change, so the filter is an evolving detection system rather than a fixed list of forbidden genres or production methods.

3. AI contribution credits are being standardized
Spotify is supporting a DDEX-developed standard that lets labels, distributors and other music partners identify where AI contributed to a release. The categories Spotify cited include vocals, instrumentation, composition and post-production.
Spotify says disclosure is intended to strengthen trust, not to punish responsible AI use or automatically down-rank a track because it carries an AI credit. Whether a credit appears depends on the metadata supplied through a participating label or distributor.
What changed in 2026: labels for AI-generated artist identities
In an August 11, 2026 announcement, Spotify said AI Persona badges would begin appearing in mid-September on some artist profiles, in Search and on playlist track rows. The badge indicates that the artist identity presented by a profile may be AI-generated.

Spotify says AI Personas are excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener follows them. This is a profile-identity label, not a declaration that every song on the profile was made with AI. A human artist can use AI in a recording without being an AI Persona, while an AI Persona label concerns the identity represented by the profile.
Spotify lists the badge alongside other 2026 trust features, including Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, AI Credits, Artist Details and Artist Profile Protection. The company reports hundreds of thousands of verified profiles, representing more than 99% of artists listeners actively search, and says tens of thousands of AI credits are submitted daily.

Does Spotify ban AI-generated music?
No. The announced policies distinguish between the use of AI as a creative tool and conduct that deceives listeners, misrepresents an artist or manipulates the platform.

How the measures differ
| Measure | Primary target | Enforcement point | Artist control | Listener effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unauthorized vocal-impersonation policy | Unapproved AI voice clones and other vocal impersonation | Content-mismatch review, including pre-release reporting and distributor checks | Authorization from the impersonated artist is required; a general appeal process was not stated | Fraudulent or misattributed releases are less likely to reach the wrong artist profile |
| Spam filter | Mass uploads, duplicates, SEO hacks, artificially short tracks and related tactics | Catalog and recommendation filtering | Artists must avoid manipulative patterns; Spotify says detection signals will evolve | Flagged tracks can be kept out of recommendations |
| AI credits | Undisclosed or unclear AI involvement | Label and distributor metadata using the DDEX standard | Partners can identify AI use in vocals, instrumentation, composition or post-production | Listeners receive more context in available credit information |
| AI Persona badge | Artist identities that may be AI-generated | Profile, Search and playlist track-row labeling | Profile-level identity protection and verification tools are part of Spotify’s listed trust features | AI Personas are excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless followed |
What artists and distributors should do
- Get permission for any recognizable cloned voice. Keep written authorization from the artist whose voice is being impersonated before delivery.
- Check the destination profile. Review artist and release metadata with your distributor, and use any pre-release reporting or content-mismatch process it provides.
- Avoid catalog-flooding patterns. Do not upload large batches of duplicates, ultra-short tracks or metadata designed primarily to capture searches or recommendations.
- Submit accurate AI credits. Tell your label or distributor whether AI contributed vocals, instrumentation, composition or post-production, using the fields it supports.
- Monitor profile-protection tools. Spotify’s 2026 trust feature list includes Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, Artist Details and Artist Profile Protection, although the announcement does not provide universal eligibility or workflow details for each one.
What listeners will notice
Most listeners will encounter the changes through discovery rather than a new playback restriction. Spam filtering is intended to keep manipulative tracks out of recommendations. AI Persona badges can appear beside an artist identity in the profile, Search and playlist rows, while AI contribution information may appear through the credits supplied by a label or distributor.
The AI Persona badge should not be read as a song-by-song production label. It addresses who or what the artist profile represents; AI Credits address how a particular recording was made.

How spam enforcement relates to royalties
Spotify’s royalties guide says rightsholders are paid according to streamshare, not a fixed per-stream rate, and that roughly two-thirds of Spotify revenue goes to recording and publishing rightsholders.
For context, Spotify’s 2025 guidance reports that music payouts grew from $1 billion in 2014 to $10 billion in 2024. It also reports that more than 71,000 artists generated at least $10,000 from Spotify in 2024, while independent artists and labels generated more than $5 billion.
Beginning in April 2024, recording tracks generally needed at least 1,000 streams in the preceding 12 months to be included in the recorded-music royalty-pool calculation. Spotify says 99.5% of streams are on tracks that meet that threshold.
Confirmed artificial streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public stream totals or charts, and do not positively influence recommendations. Spotify says severe cases can result in playlist or track removal.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat means the spam filter is primarily a trust and discovery measure, while royalty eligibility remains governed by Spotify’s streamshare and artificial-stream rules. Removing deceptive tracks can reduce attempts to divert money, but it does not create a universal per-stream payment or guarantee a particular artist’s earnings.
The practical takeaway
Spotify’s approach is a separation of three problems: stop manipulation, prevent unauthorized use of an artist’s identity, and make legitimate AI assistance more transparent. AI-generated or AI-assisted music is not automatically banned. Releases are most exposed when they combine unlicensed vocal imitation, misleading profile delivery or high-volume tactics designed to game discovery and royalties.
