Speculative decoding can make a coding agent’s token generation faster, but it is not a guaranteed speedup. Standard autoregressive inference has the target model generate one token at a time. Speculative decoding adds a draft model that proposes several tokens for the target to verify together. Whether that saves time depends on the draft’s cost, how many proposals the target accepts, and the deployed hardware and serving setup. One independent Qwen2.5-Coder experiment reported higher acceptance on code than prose, but that result is specific to its models and setup—not a forecast for coding agents generally.

How do the two decoding methods work?

Standard autoregressive inference

The target model predicts the next token from the prompt and tokens generated so far. It then uses that new token to predict the next one, repeating sequentially until generation ends. Each decoding step depends on the previous step, so the target cannot simply generate a whole continuation in one go. The 2025 NAACL paper describes this process as memory-bandwidth-bound on modern GPUs in the context it studies; actual bottlenecks depend on the hardware and workload. Decoding Speculative Decoding

Speculative decoding

A lighter draft model proposes a short sequence of future tokens. The target model checks that sequence in a verification pass, accepting a compatible prefix. If a proposal is rejected, the algorithm can sample a correction. The draft is not replacing the target as the final authority: the target still verifies the output. The original paper describes the method and its rejection-sampling approach. Fast Inference from Transformers via Speculative Decoding

The key difference is therefore not simply “small model versus large model.” It is sequential target generation versus draft-and-verify generation. The target can process proposed tokens together, potentially reducing the number of sequential target decoding steps.

Does speculative decoding change the answer?

Under the specified rejection-sampling algorithm and its assumptions, speculative decoding can preserve the target model’s output distribution. That is a mathematical guarantee about the distribution of generated outputs—not a guarantee that a particular run will produce the same text as a separate run, or that generation will be faster. The original paper sets out the distribution-preserving method. Fast Inference from Transformers via Speculative Decoding

Some related methods use approximate matching and instead aim to maintain task quality under their stated criteria. They should not be described as having the same exact distribution-preservation guarantee unless their specific method establishes it. The 2025 NAACL study discusses this distinction. Neither approach makes the target model a better coder by itself. Speculative decoding changes the execution path used to generate tokens; it does not establish an improvement in code correctness, agent planning, tool use, or task completion.

What determines whether it is faster?

Compare time to generate useful output under matching conditions—not just the number of proposed or accepted tokens. Speculation adds draft generation and verification work. Its benefit depends on how those costs compare with the target-only path.

Factor Why it matters
Draft latency The draft must generate proposals. If those steps are slow, their cost can eat into the time saved by fewer sequential target steps. The 2025 NAACL study identifies draft autoregressive latency as a possible bottleneck.
Verification cost The target spends compute checking proposals. A verification pass can dominate execution in some serving setups, according to a production-engine study summary; the result is implementation-specific. Speculative Decoding: Performance or Illusion?
Acceptance and lookahead More accepted proposals can let a verification pass advance generation further. But a long lookahead can waste work if proposals are rejected early, and the best lookahead depends on the model pair and workload. The 2024 LREC-COLING study reports cases where speculation was slower than target-only decoding and examines lookahead choices. How Speculative Can Speculative Decoding Be?
Workload and output position Acceptance can vary across prompts, requests, datasets, and positions within an output. An aggregate acceptance rate may hide differences among the tasks a coding agent actually performs. The production-engine study summary reports such variation. Speculative Decoding: Performance or Illusion?
Serving and hardware Batch size, concurrency, cache handling, engine support, and whether draft and target fit together on the available hardware can change the result. A benchmark on a different setup is not an apples-to-apples speed comparison.

The NAACL paper offers a useful conditional, not a promise: “As long as more than one token is accepted on average, speculative decoding can potentially provide speedups.” The word “potentially” matters: acceptance alone does not account for draft latency, verification overhead, or serving conditions. Decoding Speculative Decoding

The same paper reports that increasing draft size can increase acceptance while reducing throughput because of added inference latency. A production-engine study summary also reports measured results below theoretical upper bounds. These findings are reasons to measure the full deployed path, rather than infer speed from acceptance or a theoretical maximum. Does speculative decoding work better for code than prose?

One independent experiment using Qwen2.5-Coder-Instruct models from 0.5B to 7B compared HumanEval code prompts with Dolly open-QA prose prompts. Its authors reported code acceptance of approximately 0.97 and prose acceptance of approximately 0.70–0.81. They also reported a measured lookahead optimum of γ=3 for one tested 1.5B-to-3B code configuration. These are results from that repository’s setup, not independently replicated or peer-reviewed estimates, and the repository does not state a clear publication year. Independent Qwen2.5-Coder experiment and code

The results suggest that proposal agreement can differ by domain in a particular model pair and benchmark. They do not establish that code always has higher acceptance than prose, that γ=3 is a generally suitable setting, or that a coding agent will complete programming tasks faster. Acceptance is not the same measurement as end-to-end task time or correctness.

In one tested configuration, the same repository reports lower agreement and slower performance when using a cross-family draft with a text bridge. That observation suggests compatibility matters for that implementation; it does not establish a universal requirement, since other speculative methods may use different representations or draft mechanisms. Independent Qwen2.5-Coder experiment and code

How should a team evaluate it for a coding agent?

Run the comparison on the actual target hardware and serving path, with the target model, draft model, decoding settings, batch, concurrency, and coding workload held consistent. Record both performance and output behavior: a token-generation improvement alone does not establish faster or more successful coding tasks.

  1. Define the workload. Include representative coding prompts and output lengths, and specify the agent tasks and measurement method. Do not compare results from different task mixes as if they were equivalent.
  2. Compare the same target path. Measure standard autoregressive inference against the speculative configuration using the same target model and aligned hardware, software, serving, and decoding conditions.
  3. Measure end-to-end generation. Track latency and useful output tokens per second, alongside draft latency and target verification cost. Throughput by itself may not capture the latency a user experiences on an individual request.
  4. Inspect acceptance beyond its average. Measure accepted tokens per verification step and examine variation by task, prompt, request, and output position. Test lookahead settings rather than treating one reported optimum as universal.
  5. Check the coding outcome. Evaluate correctness and task completion on the same workload. Distribution-preserving decoding concerns the target’s output distribution; it does not guarantee better code or improved agent results.
  6. Account for operational costs. Check memory use, cache and serving-engine behavior, model-pair compatibility, concurrency, and the fallback path if speculation is unavailable or underperforms.

For evaluation methodology, the 2024 LREC-COLING study is relevant because it considers when speculative decoding can be slower and how lookahead affects performance. A 2026 ICML paper describes using verification feedback to inform online draft improvement; that is a research direction, not evidence that every deployed coding agent adapts its draft this way. What is not established about commercial coding agents?

The available evidence does not establish which named commercial coding agents use speculative decoding, whether any such feature is enabled for all users, or how much it changes end-to-end coding-task performance. Do not infer product use or a product-level speedup from a general decoding paper or the independent Qwen2.5-Coder experiment. A claim about a specific agent would need a primary vendor statement or a reproducible measurement of that product’s deployed behavior.
