The practical update is twofold: BloodHound Community Edition (CE) now uses OpenGraph to model data beyond traditional AD and Microsoft Entra views, while SpecterOps’ newer cross-platform monitoring and findings are described as Enterprise capabilities. BloodHound Legacy is no longer supported, according to SpecterOps’ April 2026 guidance.
What changed in BloodHound
BloodHound analyzes relationships and permissions to help security practitioners identify paths that could let an attacker move through an identity environment. Its original emphasis was Active Directory, later extending to Azure and Microsoft Entra. With OpenGraph, users can bring additional data into the graph so they can examine identity and permission relationships across other applications and environments.
When SpecterOps announced BloodHound CE v8 in July 2025, it named GitHub, Snowflake, 1Password and Microsoft SQL Server as examples of data sources that OpenGraph could model. Those examples describe the launch announcement, not a guarantee that every source is currently available in every edition. SpecterOps’ v8 announcement explains the shift beyond AD and Entra.
Notable Community Edition changes
- Table View: A sortable way to inspect graph nodes and their properties.
- Inheritance tracking: Shows where rights originate, helping users understand how permissions flow.
- Entra PIM coverage: Adds coverage for Privileged Identity Management roles.
- Trust edges: Models whether an AD trust exists, how it is configured and whether it can be abused.
- Query library: The v8 launch announcement described more than 170 curated queries at launch; that is a launch-time count, not a current total.
These features were described in the July 2025 CE v8 announcement.

BloodHound Legacy is unsupported
SpecterOps said in April 2026 that BloodHound Legacy is no longer supported and recommended BloodHound CE v8 or later for current course material. The vendor noted that CE v8.9 had been released the week before that article appeared. That is a dated version reference, not confirmation of the latest release today.
The same guidance identifies older Kali Linux packaging and installation instructions based on legacy repository paths as stale. For custom installations, SpecterOps recommends BloodHound CLI. Its course update guidance also recommends PostgreSQL, particularly for full OpenGraph functionality and performance, while noting that Neo4j still works.

Community Edition and Enterprise are different editions
Community Edition is the open-source, self-managed option. Enterprise is SpecterOps’ commercial offering for organizations seeking to operationalize identity attack-path management. Do not assume that an integration or operational feature announced for Enterprise is included in CE.
| Area | Community Edition | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Practitioners, researchers and defenders examine identity relationships and paths using a self-managed tool. | Organizations use a commercial service for identity attack-path management. |
| Operation | The user installs and manages the environment; SpecterOps’ custom-installation guidance recommends BloodHound CLI. | SpecterOps announcements describe continuous collection or monitoring, prioritized findings and remediation guidance for supported integrations. |
| Extending the graph | OpenGraph supports additional data ingestion; available sources depend on extensions and configuration. | Vendor announcements describe managed coverage and findings for named platforms. Confirm current support and entitlements with SpecterOps. |
| What to expect | An open-source tool, with deployment resources supplied by the operator. | A commercial vendor service; specific pricing and plan eligibility are not established in the cited announcements. |
SpecterOps’ 2023 CE announcement described CE as a free, open-source solution for mapping AD and Azure attack paths, with container deployment, REST APIs, user management and access control.

SpecterOps’ April 2026 BloodHound 9.0 post described Enterprise automated findings and remediation guidance for Okta, Jamf and GitHub; OpenHound, a framework for collecting and converting external data; management tools for OpenGraph extensions; and improvements to hybrid Azure and AD data handling. These are Enterprise-specific descriptions in that post, not a list of CE features. See SpecterOps’ BloodHound 9.0 update.
Other SpecterOps announcements describe Enterprise coverage for Okta, GitHub, Jamf, Active Directory and Entra, followed by AWS and Microsoft Entra Agent ID. SpecterOps also describes BloodHound Hunter as connecting approved AI agents and knowledge sources to Enterprise findings. These announcements establish what the vendor announced, not present-day availability or eligibility for a particular plan; check current product documentation before relying on a specific integration. Installing CE: resources and safety
BloodHound CE is a containerized, multi-tier application. SpecterOps’ custom-installation documentation recommends its CLI for most users and outlines alternatives for people who need changes such as a different database backend or multiple instances.
| Environment described by SpecterOps | RAM | Processors | Disk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum specifications | 8 GB | 4 cores | 10 GB |
| Large environments above 50,000 users | 96 GB | 12 cores | 50 GB |
These are vendor-published specifications, not independent performance benchmarks. SpecterOps warns that startup analysis can take about a minute and that a low-memory host may terminate a container under early API load. Consult the official custom-installation documentation for current deployment instructions.

Because BloodHound is a security-auditing tool that can also be misused, it may trigger anti-malware or endpoint detection alerts. SpecterOps recommends using a dedicated machine and coordinating in advance with the organization’s security team when auditing a corporate network. Use it only on systems you own or where you have explicit permission.

Choose CE for hands-on, self-managed analysis
CE fits practitioners who want to collect and examine identity data themselves, explore graph relationships, or work with OpenGraph extensions. The trade-off is operational responsibility: the user manages installation, database and environment resources.
Consider Enterprise for organizational operations
Enterprise is the relevant option to evaluate when an organization needs a commercial service with ongoing collection, prioritized findings or remediation guidance across supported platforms. Since connector coverage and plan eligibility can change, verify them with SpecterOps rather than inferring them from an announcement.

SpecterOps’ BloodHound Basics course covers installation, collection, ingestion, graph analysis, Cypher, APIs, administration and OpenGraph. It is a digital course for readers who want guided instruction; the cited course page does not establish a referral or affiliate arrangement.
