They are separate stocks tied to different businesses: Tesla reports automotive and energy generation and storage segments; SpaceX describes its work as spanning space, connectivity and AI. Tesla has disclosed a minority investment in SpaceX and sales of Megapack products to it, but owning TSLA is not a substitute for owning SPCX. This comparison reflects information current as of October 4, 2026.
Are SpaceX and Tesla both public stocks?
Yes. SpaceX Class A shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and Nasdaq Texas on June 12, 2026, under the ticker SPCX, according to SpaceX’s IPO closing announcement. Tesla common stock trades on Nasdaq as TSLA, according to Tesla Investor Relations.
SpaceX’s IPO pricing announcement described an offering of 555,555,555 Class A shares at $135 per share. That was the IPO offer price, not a current quote. Tesla Investor Relations lists its IPO date as June 29, 2010, and its IPO price as $17 per share; that is historical information, not today’s price.
What does each stock represent?
| Comparison | Tesla (TSLA) | SpaceX (SPCX) |
|---|---|---|
| Business description | Tesla reports automotive and energy generation and storage as its two operating segments, in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. | SpaceX describes its scope as space, connectivity and AI, including designing, manufacturing, launching and operating related products and services. This is the company’s own broad description, not a comparable segment-accounting breakdown. |
| Public-market ticker | TSLA on Nasdaq, according to Tesla Investor Relations. | SPCX; Class A shares began trading June 12, 2026, on Nasdaq Global Select Market and Nasdaq Texas, according to SpaceX. |
| Company-reported SpaceX connection | Tesla reported an investment in SpaceX common stock and revenue from Megapack sales to SpaceX. | SpaceX is a company in which Tesla disclosed a minority investment and a customer for Megapack products. |
The businesses therefore expose shareholders to different operating drivers. Comparing them as investments requires more than comparing tickers: investors would need to examine revenue mix, profitability, cash generation, capital spending, financing needs and risk factors in comparable, current filings.

Is Tesla a way to invest in SpaceX?
Not in the same way as buying SPCX. Tesla’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, says Tesla invested $2.00 billion in SpaceX common stock in March 2026, representing an ownership interest of less than 1%. Tesla also reported revenue from SpaceX purchases of Tesla Megapack products: $318 million for the three months and $405 million for the six months ended June 30, 2026. These are Tesla-reported sales figures, not SpaceX’s total spending.
The investment and commercial relationship are worth noting, but they do not make the stocks interchangeable or show that SpaceX’s performance mechanically determines TSLA’s share performance. Tesla remains a separate public company with its own business results and risks; a Tesla shareholder’s exposure to SpaceX is indirect and limited by the disclosed minority stake.

Can investors buy SpaceX stock?
Because SPCX trades publicly, investors may be able to place an order through a brokerage that offers access to the relevant market. Availability, eligibility, fees and trading features depend on the brokerage and the investor’s country or region. Confirm the ticker, exchange and order details in the brokerage account before placing a trade; this article does not recommend a broker.
How should you compare the stocks before investing?
A useful comparison relies on synchronized market data and comparable reporting periods. The figures available here do not establish current share prices, market capitalizations, valuation multiples or investment returns, so they cannot show which stock is cheaper or a better buy.

- Valuation: Use market capitalizations and operating measures from the same date and apply the same calculation method. A share price alone does not measure whether a company is expensive.
- Risk and governance: Review each issuer’s current risk factors, voting rights and share classes, executive influence, related-party transactions and business concentration. Tesla’s Q2 2026 update identifies risks including execution and scaling, demand, supply and manufacturing, regulation and geopolitical conditions, competition, and maintaining public confidence in its long-term prospects. A detailed, symmetrical governance comparison is not established by the available information here.
- Shareholder returns: Check current filings for dividend policy, repurchases and dilution. Tesla says it has never declared a common-stock dividend and does not anticipate paying a cash dividend in the foreseeable future. A comparable current SpaceX dividend-policy statement is not established here.
What to know about dividends
Tesla Investor Relations states: “Tesla has never declared dividends on our common stock. We intend on retaining all future earnings to finance future growth and therefore, do not anticipate paying any cash dividends in the foreseeable future.” This documents Tesla’s stated policy; it should not be read as evidence of SpaceX’s policy.
