Keep away from the object, keep other people and pets away, and do not touch or move it. Report a suspected fragment to local authorities; if anyone is injured, there is a fire, or damage makes a building unsafe, contact local emergency services. From a safe place, note what you can see and follow responders’ instructions. A fragment’s appearance cannot confirm where it came from, and an unknown object should not be treated as harmless.

What should I do first?

Prioritize safety, then report the find. You do not need to identify the object or determine which spacecraft it came from before asking authorities for help.

  1. Move away. Do not touch, lift, turn over, cut, wash, bag, ship, or discard the object. Keep children, pets, visitors, and other bystanders back without approaching it to set up a barrier.
  2. Check for an immediate threat from a safe location. If someone is hurt, there is a fire, or apparent damage makes a structure unsafe, contact local emergency services. Do not enter a damaged area to inspect the object or retrieve belongings.
  3. Report the find. If there is no immediate emergency, contact local authorities and ask what to do next. NASA’s advice in a notice about suspected fragments from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) was to report sightings to local authorities; that notice is mission-specific, not a universal debris hotline. NASA’s TRMM reentry notice
  4. Make safe observations. Note the time and precise location, what the object looks like from where you are, and whether you can see smoke, fire, or damage. Photograph it only if you can do so without moving closer. Do not approach to capture a serial number or a clearer image.
  5. Wait for instructions. Keep people away and let responders decide whether the scene needs to be examined, secured, or assessed by specialists.

This practical sequence reflects NASA’s no-handling and local-reporting advice, the FAA’s requirements for licensed operators’ mishap processes, and the information used in official recovered-object records. It is guidance for a property finder, not a formal homeowner reporting form or a requirement to file an FAA operator report. FAA space mishap and enforcement information

When you make a report, keep the description factual: say what you saw, where and when you saw it, and what appears to have happened. Distinguish what you observed directly from what you suspect. For example, “a dark, metal-looking object beside a damaged roof” is more useful than presenting “satellite debris” as a confirmed identification. You can mention a nearby reentry report as context, but do not treat it as proof.

Should I touch it?

No. Do not handle an unidentified object, even if it looks like an ordinary piece of metal or appears cool and inactive.

Fragments may have sharp edges or other hazards that are not apparent from a distance. NASA noted sharp edges in its TRMM notice. Although that notice said the pieces expected from that particular spacecraft were not toxic, that mission-specific assessment does not establish that an unknown object is safe. The international Rescue Agreement also recognizes that recovered space objects may pose a hazard. NASA’s text of the relevant space treaties

Do not try to make the object safer by washing, covering, cutting, or collecting it. Those actions can expose you to an unknown hazard, disturb the scene, or make a specialist’s assessment harder. The safest useful role for a finder is to keep away, preserve what can be observed from a distance, and pass information to authorities.

Gloves or other household protective gear do not turn an unidentified fragment into something safe to handle. Nor should you bag or ship it to an agency for testing: let responders advise on whether and how it should be examined. The same rule applies if the object looks small, has no visible markings, or seems to have cooled after landing.

Who do I call?

Call local emergency services for an immediate danger; otherwise, start with local authorities and ask for instructions. There is no universal homeowner debris hotline established by the cited guidance, and a mission-specific contact or announcement should not be treated as a reporting route for every find.

When reporting, give the location and discovery time, describe what you can observe without approaching, and mention any visible injury, smoke, fire, or property damage. Tell the person taking the report whether anyone may be in danger or whether a building appears unsafe. Follow any instructions about access and keep others back while waiting.

NASA’s TRMM notice, published June 11, 2015 and updated June 16, 2015, stated: “Any sightings of suspected TRMM debris should be reported to local authorities.” That is a useful example of NASA’s local-reporting advice for that mission, not a standing instruction naming one agency or phone number for every suspected fragment. If a different launch or spacecraft is mentioned in an incident announcement, use local authorities as your starting point unless they direct you elsewhere.

The practical decision is based on the situation, not on whether you can name the object: an immediate threat calls for emergency response; a find with no apparent immediate danger still merits routine reporting to local authorities. If specialists later identify it, an operator or launching authority may become involved. Those roles do not change the finder’s first steps.

How can I tell whether it is really space debris?

You generally cannot confirm that from appearance alone. A scorched surface, an unusual shape, or a reported reentry near the area may be useful observations, but none proves an object’s origin.

NASA’s analysis of a recovered object that struck a home in Naples, Florida, illustrates why identification takes more than a photograph. With the homeowner’s cooperation, NASA compared the object with known hardware and analyzed its materials before identifying it as a stanchion from equipment used on the International Space Station. NASA’s orbital-debris FAQ says most material does not survive reentry, but surviving material can pose a risk to people and property. Neither that general pattern nor a news report about a reentry can identify a particular object found on the ground. Do not describe a find as radioactive, toxic, or harmless without evidence; let authorities and specialists assess it. NASA’s orbital-debris FAQ

The Naples object was a specific, professionally identified item—not a size or appearance test for other finds. NASA reported that the Inconel stanchion weighed 1.6 pounds and measured 4 inches high by 1.6 inches in diameter. Those dimensions describe that item only; they cannot be used to rule a different object in or out. NASA’s account of the Naples object analysis

It is also important not to confuse a general statement about orbital debris with a finding about an object on the ground. Most material burning up during reentry does not mean every surviving piece is safe, and a hazard cannot be judged reliably by color, shape, smell, or apparent condition from a homeowner’s viewpoint. Leave questions of identity and material composition to people equipped to assess the object.

What if it damaged my home?

Protect people first and report the damage along with the object. If the impact may have made part of the building unsafe, keep people out and contact local emergency services; do not go inside to inspect the suspected fragment or start repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

From a safe place, record visible damage separately from your observations of the object. A photograph of the affected area is appropriate only if taking it does not require entering a risky location or approaching the fragment. Tell responders what was struck and what looks damaged, and follow their directions before anyone accesses the scene.

After reporting the incident, contact your homeowners insurer or an appropriate adviser to ask what documentation and next steps apply to your situation. Coverage depends on the applicable policy and facts; it should not be assumed. Repairs and restoration should wait until responders have cleared the area.

There is a confirmed example of property impact: NASA said an object struck a home in Naples on March 8, 2024, and later identified it as space-station hardware. That establishes that such damage can occur, not that every suspected fragment is space debris or that an individual homeowner will automatically receive compensation. International liability rules address responsibility between states, with particular provisions and exceptions. They are not an instant payment procedure for a property owner and do not guarantee insurance coverage. Keep the incident facts and any official findings available when discussing possible claims with an insurer or adviser.

For an individual homeowner, the useful distinction is between documenting a loss and establishing who is legally responsible for it. Record damage you can see safely, keep relevant incident information, and ask the insurer or an adviser what applies to your circumstances. Do not assume a treaty creates a direct, automatic claim process for you, or that a possible claim is a reason to delay emergency reporting.

Can I keep or sell the object?

Do not assume that finding a fragment makes it yours. Article VIII of the Outer Space Treaty says ownership of launched objects and their component parts is not affected by their return to Earth. The Rescue Agreement addresses state notification, recovery, and return of space objects; those state-level duties are not instructions for a homeowner to notify the United Nations personally. NASA’s text of the relevant space treaties

That ownership distinction is another reason not to collect, discard, or sell a suspected fragment. Leave it where it is, report it, and wait for instructions from local authorities and any specialists they involve. Do not let curiosity about its value or origin override safety or the official handling of the scene.

The treaty provisions explain ownership and responsibilities at the state level; they do not tell a finder to arrange a return personally. Your role is to report the location and follow local instructions, not to decide ownership, transport the object, or contact an international body on your own.

What background numbers should I treat cautiously?

Some published figures describe a particular period or incident and should not be read as current totals or general identification rules. For example, an FAA report to Congress published in September 2023 said there had been fewer than 90 reentry events with recovered debris since 1960. That was the report’s dated count, not a cumulative total through November 2026. FAA report to Congress on reentry and satellite disposal

Likewise, NASA’s dimensions for the Naples stanchion and its assessment of expected TRMM fragments apply to those specific cases. They cannot establish the identity, composition, or hazard level of a different object. For a property finder, the reliable distinction is practical: report what is observed, but leave identification and hazard assessment to the appropriate authorities and specialists.

The number of reported reentry events is background, not a measure of the chance that any particular object on your property came from orbit. Likewise, the confirmed Naples impact shows that property damage is possible, but it does not make an unverified find a confirmed impact. Treat each incident on its own facts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I already picked up or moved a suspected fragment?

Stop handling it and move away without trying to put it back, clean it, or package it. Tell local authorities what you did and when, and mention any contact, damage, or symptoms so they can advise you on the appropriate next steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a satellite reentry prediction prove a fragment came from space?

No. A predicted or reported reentry may be relevant context for authorities, but it does not establish the provenance of an object found at a particular address. An identification requires evidence about the object itself.

Will NASA or the FAA come to my property to collect it?

No universal response or collection commitment for every homeowner report is established here. Contact local authorities first; they can provide directions and determine whether another agency or specialist should be involved.

Should I wear gloves or use a tool to move it?

No. Gloves or household tools do not establish that an unidentified object is safe to handle. Keep away, do not collect or package it, and let local authorities advise on the next steps.

Will my homeowners insurance cover the damage?

Coverage depends on your policy and the circumstances, so it cannot be promised in advance. Once the scene is safe and responders have been notified, contact your insurer or an appropriate adviser about documentation and next steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does international space law mean I can file a claim directly with a launching country?

The cited treaty rules address state responsibilities and claims, with specific provisions and exceptions. They are not an automatic individual homeowner payment process; discuss your actual loss with your insurer or an appropriate adviser.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Keep away, keep others back, and do not touch or move a suspected space-debris fragment. Contact local emergency services if there is immediate danger; otherwise report it to local authorities. Record only what you can see safely, and wait for responders before anyone examines or removes the object.
