Do not delete audio drivers just because Device Manager lists several. Keep every driver tied to hardware you use—built-in speakers and headphones, HDMI/DisplayPort, USB, Bluetooth, or a supporting controller. First confirm that Windows is using the right output and that the problem is not a mute, app setting, or service failure. Then update or reinstall only the identified device, preferably through Windows Update or your PC maker’s support page.

Before changing any driver

Driver changes cannot fix sound that is simply routed to the wrong device. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar, check that volume is audible, and choose the intended output. A monitor, dock, television, Bluetooth headset, or USB device may currently be selected instead of the laptop or desktop speakers.

For application-specific problems, open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer. Confirm that the affected app is not muted and that its output device is correct. Windows allows each app to have its own volume and output route; system sounds can work while one app remains silent. See Microsoft’s guidance at fix app audio when system sounds work.

  • No sound anywhere: check output selection, mute, services, drivers, and hardware.
  • Only one app is silent: inspect Volume mixer and that app’s audio settings first.
  • Headphones work but speakers do not: investigate jack detection, enhancements, the built-in device, and speaker hardware.
  • HDMI works but laptop speakers do not: focus on the built-in audio device rather than automatically removing graphics audio.

What the entries in Device Manager mean

A driver is software that lets Windows communicate with a hardware device. Several entries are normal because a computer can have several independent audio paths. Open Start/search → Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers.

Device Manager entry Usually keep? Why
Realtek, Conexant, Cirrus Logic, Synaptics, or an OEM audio device Yes Often controls built-in speakers, microphone, and headphone jack.
Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA Display Audio Yes if you use HDMI or DisplayPort audio Carries sound to a monitor, TV, dock, or graphics-card output.
USB Audio Device or a named USB headset/DAC Yes if used Required for that USB audio hardware.
Bluetooth audio or headset entries Yes if used Provides the wireless audio path and profiles.
Intel Smart Sound Technology or a similar controller Usually yes May be a supporting audio controller, particularly in laptops.
Old, greyed-out, or disconnected device Usually leave it initially It may represent previously connected hardware, not the current failure.
Unknown device with a yellow warning icon Investigate, do not blindly delete It could be an audio controller or an unrelated hardware problem.

Names vary by model. The correct package depends on the exact computer, Windows edition, and hardware—not simply on the word “audio.” Do not uninstall every item, manually delete files from the Windows Driver Store, or trust a one-click driver-cleaner recommendation.

Run Microsoft’s audio troubleshooter

  1. Open Get Help in Windows 11.
  2. Search for or launch the audio troubleshooter.
  3. Allow it to inspect output devices, volume, services, and driver-related settings.
  4. Apply a proposed fix and test sound before moving on. Record any error message.

The exact Get Help interface can change with Windows updates. Microsoft’s current troubleshooting sequence is documented at Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Safe order for updating an audio driver

1. Use Windows Update

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates, including a relevant optional driver update when appropriate.
  4. Restart and test the intended output.

Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the normal source for audio drivers. Details are in Update audio drivers in Windows.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

2. Search from Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Right-click the suspected device and choose Update driver.
  3. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  4. Restart and test.

If Windows says “The best drivers for your device are already installed,” that only means this search did not find a better package. The PC manufacturer may still provide a newer or more suitable driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Install the exact manufacturer package

Use the computer maker’s official support site when the issue began after an upgrade, the laptop has special audio features, Windows’ generic driver loses jack detection or microphone functions, or Device Manager shows a warning. Search by the exact model or serial number and download only the package for that model and Windows version. OEM software may provide microphone processing, Dolby or DTS features, jack detection, and control-panel integration that a generic package lacks.

Reinstall only the affected device

  1. Save open work and ensure you can restart the computer.
  2. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the confirmed problem device and select Uninstall device.
  4. If Windows displays Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you deliberately have a replacement package available or expect Windows to reinstall it.
  5. Confirm Uninstall, restart, and test.
  6. If the device does not return, open Device Manager and choose Action → Scan for hardware changes. Install the saved OEM package if necessary.

Microsoft documents restart-and-reinstall as the expected recovery path, but it can fail if Windows cannot detect the hardware or lacks the package. Its device-reinstallation guidance also recommends scanning for hardware changes: fix microphone and device problems.

Use the generic Windows audio driver as a fallback

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
  2. Choose Browse my computer for drivers.
  3. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  4. Choose an appropriate generic audio device, select Next, and test.

This Microsoft-supported fallback can restore basic playback, but it may omit OEM effects, microphone processing, surround features, jack detection, or manufacturer control panels. Install the model-specific package if those functions matter.

When rollback is better than updating

If sound stopped immediately after Windows Update or a driver update:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager and the audio device’s Properties.
  2. Open the Driver tab.
  3. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  4. Restart and test.

If rollback is unavailable or fails, reinstall the previous OEM package or use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists. Rollback is not the right response to a missing device or a warning icon that calls for a clean, correct installation. Microsoft’s main procedure is at Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Restart Windows audio services

A service failure can silence otherwise healthy devices. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and restart:

  • Windows Audio
  • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

Then test playback. Microsoft lists these services among remedies for crackling, distorted, and app-specific audio problems: fix distorted or crackling audio.

Cases that need a different response

No audio output device is installed

In Device Manager, check whether the device is disabled, missing, or marked with a yellow warning icon. Try View → Show hidden devices to inspect old entries, restart, and use Action → Scan for hardware changes. Install the exact OEM driver. Check BIOS/UEFI for an onboard-audio setting only when the manufacturer documents one. Testing a known-good USB or Bluetooth audio device can help separate an onboard detection problem from a Windows-wide failure. See Microsoft’s missing-output-device guide.

Sound is crackling, quiet, or distorted

Disable audio enhancements, try another default format, restart the two audio services, and then update or reinstall the driver. Menu names can differ by Windows version and OEM audio software. Microsoft covers enhancements, formats, services, and low volume at fix distorted or crackling audio and fix low or quiet sound.

A yellow warning icon appears

Open Properties and record the exact Device Manager error code before changing anything. Use Microsoft’s error-code guidance at Device Manager error codes. The code may indicate a disabled device, missing package, resource problem, or hardware detection failure.

External audio works but built-in speakers do not

Concentrate on the internal speaker path, jack detection, OEM software, and laptop hardware. Working USB, Bluetooth, or HDMI audio is evidence that those separate drivers should remain installed; it is not a reason to remove them.

When hardware becomes more likely

After software checks, narrow the fault by testing a known-good wired headset, a USB audio device, another application, and both built-in and external outputs after a clean restart. If the internal device remains absent, BIOS/UEFI does not expose it, or the OEM driver cannot detect it, contact the PC manufacturer or a repair service. These tests narrow the possibilities but do not by themselves prove a hardware failure.

Windows 10 note

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Existing audio functions do not automatically stop working, and the troubleshooting steps may still apply, but Microsoft no longer provides normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system after that date. See Microsoft’s low-volume guidance for the support-date qualification.
