A teardown of a limited-edition PS5 Slim has reportedly found a practical serviceability improvement: its CR2032 CMOS battery is easier to remove and replace. The console technician who examined it also reported changes to the motherboard layout, HDMI retimer and cooling assembly. Sony has not confirmed that this revision will appear across retail PS5 Slim consoles, and the report does not show a performance upgrade.
What the new PS5 Slim teardown reportedly found
Video Games Chronicle reported on October 2, 2026, that console technician and modder Modyfikator89 opened a limited-edition Wolverine PS5 Slim and identified an EDM-051 motherboard. According to the teardown, the CR2032 CMOS battery can now be removed and replaced more easily than in earlier Slim versions. Earlier batteries were replaceable, but the reported change is about access—not a first-ever ability to replace one.
The technician said the revision “isn’t just another cosmetic revision.” VGC also reported several internal changes:
- Motherboard layout: a redesigned arrangement of components.
- HDMI retimer: a different implementation that VGC describes as newer and lower-cost.
- Cooling: changes to the liquid-metal protection and heatsink construction.
Modyfikator89 said, “Compared with the 2025 Slim revision, which had already received the improved cooling system, Sony has changed things again.” He also described a different-looking area around the APU and die, with liquid-metal containment that appeared closer to the approach used in the PS5 Pro. These are observations from one teardown, not specifications Sony has announced. Video Games Chronicle’s report does not provide independent thermal or performance measurements.

Does the revision improve gaming performance?
There is no reported evidence that EDM-051 games run faster, look better, or load more quickly. A revised cooling design alone does not establish a measurable temperature or performance improvement. VGC notes that hardware revisions may make little or no difference to gameplay and says existing Slim owners do not need to upgrade solely for this revision.
How EDM-051 differs from earlier Slim revisions
Keep the October 2026 EDM-051 teardown distinct from reports about the CFI-2116 Slim from 2025. Those earlier reports concerned a particular Digital Edition and a separate heatsink observation; they do not prove that the limited-edition EDM-051 has the same capacity or cooling parts.

What buyers should check before choosing a PS5 Slim
The EDM-051 board is not confirmed as a retail-wide change, and Sony’s current US listing does not say that it is included. If a particular revision or storage capacity matters to your purchase, verify the exact model number and capacity shown for the console you are buying rather than relying on the phrase “latest PS5 Slim.” Sony’s US listing identifies the 1 TB Slim as CFI-2100 and says CFI-2100 accessories for the CFI-2000 group, including separately sold covers, are compatible.
The teardown describes an internal battery and easier access; it does not provide a Sony service procedure or recommend replacing the battery preemptively. Treat the reported change as a repairability detail, not an instruction to open a console.
