The headline dates to August 15, 2024: HotHardware reported that Sonos had laid off approximately 100 employees and was considering whether to bring back its previous app. The cuts were not publicly tied directly to the app, and the possible return was never confirmed as a relaunch. Later company statements describe recovery work and continued updates to the Sonos S2 app—not a return to the old app.

What happened in August 2024?

HotHardware reported that Sonos had laid off approximately 100 employees. CEO Patrick Spence described the decision as difficult but necessary to support the company’s product roadmap and long-term success. The report did not quote Sonos directly linking the layoffs to the app problems, so it would be inaccurate to say the app caused the job cuts. Read HotHardware’s August 15, 2024 report.

The timing connected the news to a difficult period for Sonos. In May 2024, the company released a redesigned app and operating system. Sonos later acknowledged in its fiscal 2025 annual report that the rollout left out features and brought performance, setup, and reliability problems. The company said customer complaints and dissatisfaction rose, and that it believed the issues hurt sales of existing products and damaged its reputation. Sonos also said two product launches were delayed by a quarter. Sonos’s fiscal 2025 annual report provides the company’s retrospective account.

Did Sonos bring back the old app?

No reviewed announcement confirms that Sonos relaunched its previous app. The August 2024 wording that Sonos “may” bring it back described reported exploration, not an approved or completed decision. Later official updates and company statements describe fixing and evolving the newer Sonos S2 app instead.

  • Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.

That distinction matters: the available reporting supports saying the company considered the possibility in 2024, but it does not establish that the old app returned, that Sonos formally committed to bringing it back, or why a revival might or might not have been technically feasible.

How did Sonos respond to the app problems?

August 2024: recovery commitments

In August 2024, Sonos announced customer-experience measures that included regular mobile software upgrades, gradually rolling out major app changes, and improving quality practices. The company said it had reintroduced more than 80% of the app’s missing features at that time; this was a dated progress figure, not a current measure of feature completeness. Spence said, “Our priority since its release has been – and continues to be – fixing the app.” Sonos’s customer-experience announcement outlines those commitments.

2025: the company’s retrospective

In its fiscal 2025 filing, Sonos said software updates had substantially addressed the app issues by the time of the filing. That is the company’s assessment, not independent confirmation that every problem was resolved for every customer. The filing also records the business consequences Sonos associated with the rollout, including reputational harm and delayed product launches.

2026: continued work on the S2 app

In a March 2026 interview, CEO Tom Conrad described the work as restoring performance, reliability, and basic functions before improving the experience. He said, “We had to fix performance and reliability — we had to restore baseline functionality that had been dropped from the product in its initial release.” He also said, “We’re now at the place where we can update the app to return it to more conventional choices.” These comments describe changes to the evolving app, not a promise to restore the previous app. Read TechRadar’s interview with Conrad.

What should Sonos users take from the story?

  • The approximately 100 layoffs were reported in 2024; HotHardware did not report a direct statement from Sonos attributing them to the app.
  • Sonos later acknowledged serious problems with the May 2024 redesign and described their impact in its annual filing.
  • The old-app return was a reported possibility, not a confirmed relaunch. Later company updates describe continued work on the newer S2 app.
  • Sonos 27 was announced for S2 products in September 2026. Check Sonos’s current compatibility and rollout information for details about a particular device.
