Some Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra owners reported freezes, severe lag, repeated restarts, and boot loops after a September 2024 One UI 6.1-based update. These reports do not establish that One UI 6.1.1 caused every failure, how many phones were affected, or that the devices were permanently “bricked.” Samsung’s published guidance treats a phone that will not start as a problem with several possible causes; a device that cannot boot after a failed update may need professional service to reflash it.

What Galaxy S22 owners reported

On December 19, 2024, SamMobile reported claims from several Galaxy S22 users who said their phones began stuttering, freezing, restarting repeatedly, or entering boot loops after a September 2024 One UI 6.1-based update. Some users said service centers described a fried or faulty motherboard. Those are secondhand reports of user experiences, not a Samsung finding that the update damaged the motherboard.

Samsung announced on September 5, 2024, that One UI 6.1.1 would expand to additional Galaxy devices beginning September 12. SamMobile later reported that the carrier-unlocked US Galaxy S22 series received an Android 14-based One UI 6.1.1 update with the September 2024 security patch. Availability and timing varied by country, carrier, and model, so not every S22 owner necessarily received the same build at the same time.

What is and is not confirmed

Samsung’s published support guidance explains general causes of startup problems and what to do after an update fails. It does not confirm a specific One UI 6.1.1 defect affecting Galaxy S22 phones. The material available from Samsung also does not establish a recall, an affected-device count, or a universal free-repair policy. There is no validated prevalence figure to use; community posts and words such as “thousands” cannot establish how common the problem is.

“Bricked” is often used informally to describe a phone that will not start or is stuck restarting. It does not by itself establish whether the cause is software, battery, an incompatible app, or hardware—or whether the phone can be recovered. Samsung lists all of those as possible causes of a phone that will not start or is in a boot loop.

What to try before arranging repair

  1. Check for physical damage. Inspect the phone for signs of damage before troubleshooting.
  2. Charge it with a Samsung-certified charger. Samsung recommends certified charging as part of its boot-loop troubleshooting. If the phone has a damaged charging port or other visible damage, arrange professional inspection instead of continuing to troubleshoot it yourself.
  3. Try Safe Mode if the phone can reach it. Safe Mode runs core applications. If the problem stops in Safe Mode, Samsung says a third-party app may be responsible.
  4. If Safe Mode changes the behavior, remove recent apps one at a time. Restart and check whether the issue returns after each removal; this can help identify an app associated with the problem.
  5. Stop if the phone still cannot boot. Contact a Samsung service center or arrange Samsung repair service. Samsung says service is required to reflash a device that cannot boot normally after an update fails.

Self-triage or Samsung service?

Use this distinction to decide whether basic troubleshooting is still practical. It is not a diagnosis of the phone’s cause.

  • The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
Situation Reasonable next step What to keep in mind
The phone starts and the problem changes or stops in Safe Mode Remove recently installed apps one at a time and check the phone after each removal. Samsung identifies an incompatible app as one possible cause; Safe Mode behavior does not prove that an app is responsible.
The phone will not start or remains in a boot loop after certified charging Arrange Samsung service for inspection. Samsung lists software glitches, low battery, incompatible apps, and hardware issues as possible causes. The cause cannot be determined from the boot loop alone.
The phone cannot boot normally after an update failed Contact Samsung for service; the device may need a professional firmware reflash. Samsung says service is required to reflash in this situation. A consumer reset or flashing tool is not a guaranteed fix and may put data at risk.

Protect your data and repair record

Before handing over a phone that still responds, back up accessible data if you can do so without worsening the problem. Do not assume a reflash or other repair will preserve data. If the phone will not boot, avoid repeated improvised repair attempts when the files matter; ask Samsung or the repair provider about data handling before authorizing work.

Record the exact model, carrier, software or firmware build if available, when the update was installed, and when the symptoms began. Describe what the phone can currently reach—lock screen, Safe Mode, recovery, or no startup—rather than diagnosing it as a motherboard failure unless a technician has confirmed that diagnosis. Samsung’s support guidance recommends professional inspection for persistent boot-loop or no-start problems; eligibility, warranty coverage, and repair charges depend on the individual device and service circumstances.
