The invisible menace is photovoltaic soiling: dust, soot, aerosols, pollen, fungi, snow and other deposits that build up on module glass. The layer blocks, absorbs, scatters and reflects sunlight before it reaches the active cell, so a system can produce less electricity even when its panels look intact. Uneven deposits are more serious than a uniform film because they can create current mismatch, local heating and hotspots.
The right response is not an automatic monthly wash. Measure how much output is being lost, identify whether rain is removing the deposits, then choose cleaning, monitoring, a dry robotic method or a surface treatment when the recovered energy justifies the cost and risk.
What solar-panel soiling is
Soiling is any material that remains on the light-facing surface of a photovoltaic module. NIST’s 2020 description includes mineral dust, soot, aerosols, pollen, fungi and other contaminants; snow is also a major contributor in many climates. Particles may arrive from roads, construction, agriculture, deserts, industrial activity, wildfire smoke or nearby vegetation. Moisture can make them adhere, and repeated wetting and drying can cement a loose powder into a harder film.

Glass can still look reasonably clear while its optical transmission has deteriorated. A thin, evenly distributed layer reduces the irradiance reaching every cell. A patchy layer creates a second problem: different parts of the module receive different light levels and no longer operate at the same current. Bypass diodes can limit some effects, but the shaded sections may still dissipate energy as heat.

How deposits turn sunlight into lost power
Absorption, scattering and reflection
Photons must pass through the module’s glass and encapsulant before reaching the semiconductor. Dark soot and some organic films absorb part of that light. Mineral particles scatter it away from the cell or send it back into the atmosphere. Smooth or wet films can increase reflection. The result is lower photocurrent and therefore lower power at the inverter, even though the electrical wiring and inverter may be operating normally.
Why a dirty module does not lose a fixed percentage
The loss depends on particle chemistry, size, coverage, humidity, cementation and the module’s optical design. A clean-looking haze may be harmful in one location and negligible in another. Tilt and orientation determine whether rainfall carries material away or leaves streaks. For this reason, a headline such as “dust costs 10%” is not a universal rule.
Hotspots from nonuniform soiling
Alkharusi and colleagues, writing in Solar Energy in 2024, found that nonuniform soiling caused a 13% transmittance drop, an average 2 °C temperature increase and an average 30% reduction in power output versus a clean sample in their experiment. They also reported hotspot-formation risk. These are study conditions, not a guaranteed loss for every rooftop, but they show why a partially covered cell can be more damaging than the same amount of dust spread evenly.

How much energy dust can cost
The scale ranges from a small, temporary reduction after a dry spell to a major annual loss in a dusty or snow-prone site.
| Evidence | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| IEA Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme, 2023 | Soiling is described as the most influential factor affecting system yield after irradiance on a global scale; estimated annual energy-production loss is 3–5%, with €3–5 billion in economic loss from higher operating, cleaning and/or capital expenditure. | A global estimate across PV systems, not a prediction for one array. |
| Solar Energy, Alkharusi et al., 2024 | 13% transmittance drop, 2 °C average temperature rise and 30% average power-output reduction for nonuniformly soiled samples versus a clean sample. | An experimental result showing the consequences of uneven coverage. |
| Renewable Energy, 2024 outdoor characterization | Horizontal coupons showed 60–66% relative transmittance decreases across wet-season, dry-season and full-year exposures; PM10-sized particles were prevalent in the sampled region. | Strong site and geometry dependence; horizontal coupons soil faster than many tilted modules. |
| Discover Sustainability systematic review, 2026 | Roughly 6–7% efficiency losses within months and more than 20–30% after extended exposure are reported across the reviewed literature. | A range synthesized from many studies, not a guaranteed time schedule. |
Because the losses compound over time, a small daily reduction can become a material annual shortfall. The financial impact is the value of energy that would have been generated minus the cost and risk of restoring it. Commercial operators also account for labor, water, access equipment, downtime and the possibility of scratching or breaking modules.
Why some arrays soil faster than others
- Airborne load: Desert dust, road dust, construction particles, soot, salt spray and agricultural aerosols increase deposition.
- Biological material: Pollen, spores, algae and fungi can form sticky or opaque films, especially where humidity remains high.
- Rain and snow: Heavy, wind-driven rain can rinse glass; light rain may leave a concentrated ring or muddy residue. Snow can block light completely until it slides or melts.
- Humidity and dew: Moisture increases adhesion and can turn loose particles into a cemented layer.
- Wind: Wind direction controls which module rows receive material, while high speeds can abrade surfaces when grit is blown across glass.
- Tilt and orientation: Steeper modules usually shed water and particles more readily than horizontal surfaces. Nearby obstructions can create sheltered zones where deposits remain.
- Glass and coatings: Surface texture, anti-reflective treatment and hydrophobic or hydrophilic behavior affect how particles attach and how easily water removes them.
- Array layout: Row spacing, frame edges and drainage paths can produce streaks or concentrate dirt at the lower edge.
- Cleaning interval: A long interval allows layers to harden, increasing the water, labor and abrasion needed for removal.
IEA-PVPS emphasizes that soiling is heterogeneous at both module and plant level. One visual inspection or one “representative” panel may not describe the entire array.

How to tell whether soiling is reducing your output
Do not diagnose from the inverter’s instantaneous wattage alone; irradiance, temperature, grid limits and shading change that number. Use a clean reference and compare like with like.
- Record a baseline. Save daily energy, peak power, weather and inverter status for at least several clear days. A monitoring portal that reports irradiance or plane-of-array conditions is more useful than a power graph by itself.
- Inspect several locations. Check upper, middle and lower rows, different orientations and modules near roads, vents, trees or exhaust sources. Look for dust films, bird residue, pollen, salt, streaks and hard deposits.
- Compare with a clean reference. A soiling sensor, reference cell or a carefully selected clean module can provide the comparison. Keep the reference at the same tilt and orientation as the modules it represents.
- Check electrical patterns. Repeatedly lower current in one string, unusual string-to-string differences or module-level temperature anomalies can indicate uneven soiling, shading, connector faults or failing bypass diodes. Soiling is only one possible cause.
- Estimate recoverable value. Multiply the measured fractional loss by expected energy production and the value of that energy over the proposed cleaning interval. Include access, water, labor, equipment and outage costs.
- Clean a test area first. On a representative row, clean a small group using the intended method and compare output under similar irradiance. A measurable improvement supports a wider operation; no improvement points to another fault or an inadequate cleaning method.
Choosing a mitigation method
| Method | Where it fits | Advantages | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural rainfall | Sites with regular, sufficiently intense rain and non-cemented deposits | No operating labor, water or equipment | Light rain can leave streaks; effectiveness depends on droplet energy, deposit chemistry and module tilt. |
| Manual or water-based cleaning | Rooftops and small-to-medium arrays with safe access | Mature, flexible and capable of removing sticky deposits | Labor, water quality, runoff, roof safety and abrasion risk; follow the module maker’s instructions. |
| Robotic or dry cleaning | Large arrays, difficult access or water-constrained regions | Can reduce water use and repeated labor; commercialized systems in a 2026 systematic review achieved about 90–99% dust removal in reported applications | Capital cost, navigation, brush/contact wear, maintenance, wind limits and possible abrasion require site-specific evaluation. |
| Anti-soiling or self-cleaning surfaces | New projects or modules being refurbished where long-term field data support the choice | May reduce adhesion and cleaning frequency | Compare optical durability, coating life, abrasion resistance, climate fit and verified field performance; laboratory gains may not persist outdoors. |
| Monitoring-led cleaning | Any array where energy value and cleaning cost can be measured | Triggers work when lost energy exceeds the intervention cost | Needs a reliable clean reference, consistent data and a response plan. |
How to clean panels without scratching them
Cleaning is a maintenance operation, not a pressure-washing job. The module manufacturer’s manual takes priority because glass, coatings, seals and warranties differ.
- Choose safe conditions. Work when modules are cool, typically early morning or late afternoon, and stop for lightning, high wind or wet roof conditions. Use fall protection and never step on the glass.
- Remove loose grit first. Use a soft, non-abrasive brush or low-pressure rinse suitable for photovoltaic modules. Dragging dry sand across glass can create permanent micro-scratches.
- Use compatible water. Hard water can dry into mineral spots. If the manufacturer permits wet cleaning, use the specified water quality and avoid solvents, abrasive powders and unapproved detergents.
- Wash gently. A soft, clean brush or a purpose-built water-fed tool should move with light pressure. Do not force a hardened deposit across the surface; loosen it with approved water and repeated gentle passes.
- Control runoff. Keep dirty water from drying on lower rows, roof membranes, electrical equipment or neighboring property. Protect connectors and junction boxes from direct spray.
- Inspect after drying. Check for streaks, scratches, chipped glass, frame damage and remaining cemented patches. Photograph unusual defects for the installer or manufacturer.
- Verify the result. Compare energy and string behavior under similar irradiance. If output does not improve, investigate shading, inverter clipping, wiring, degradation or sensor errors rather than repeating increasingly aggressive cleaning.
Are solar-panel cleaning robots worth it?
Robots make the most sense when the array is large, water is scarce, access is expensive or deposits must be removed frequently. The relevant question is not the advertised removal percentage alone. A system that removes 90–99% of dust in commercialized applications may still be uneconomic if its capital cost, charging infrastructure, brush replacement, navigation failures or maintenance exceed the value of recovered generation.

Before buying or contracting, request a site trial and check:
- Removal performance on your actual dust, pollen or salt mixture, not only laboratory powder.
- Whether contact materials, wheel loads and repeated passes can abrade glass or coatings.
- Operation on your row spacing, frame height, tilt, obstacles and wind conditions.
- Battery endurance, return-to-base behavior, remote alerts and manual recovery procedures.
- Service intervals, spare parts, operator training and warranty responsibility.
- How the system handles wet or cemented deposits that dry brushing may not remove.
When coatings and self-cleaning claims need caution
A surface treatment can reduce adhesion or help water sheet away, but performance is climate-dependent. Ultraviolet exposure, airborne grit, repeated brushing, salt and freeze-thaw cycles can change a coating’s optical and mechanical properties. Compare the treatment with an untreated control at the same site and measure energy, transmittance and cleaning frequency over time. A laboratory contact-angle result is not proof of a durable field benefit.
A practical cleaning decision rule
Set a trigger instead of relying on a calendar. Let L be the measured fractional energy loss, E the expected energy during the decision period and V the value per unit of energy. Clean when L × E × V is greater than the full cleaning cost plus a reasonable allowance for risk and downtime. Recalculate after unusual events such as wildfire smoke, construction dust, pollen release, ash or a snowstorm.

For a small rooftop, a seasonal inspection and a manufacturer-approved gentle wash may be sufficient. For a utility-scale plant, automated soiling sensors, reference cells and performance analytics can rank rows by loss and schedule crews or robots where the return is highest. In every case, sample multiple parts of the array because a single clean-looking module can hide a plant-wide pattern.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
“The panels look fine, but production is down.”
Check irradiance, temperature, inverter status and grid curtailment first. Then compare a clean reference with naturally exposed modules and inspect for an invisible haze, pollen or fine soot. If the reference comparison shows no soiling difference, look for shading, sensor drift, inverter clipping or module degradation.
“Output is lower only on one string.”
Inspect that string’s rows for localized dust, bird deposits, vegetation or a recurring streak from an upper frame. Also test connectors, fuses, bypass diodes and cable insulation. Uneven soiling can mimic an electrical fault, so combine visual, thermal and string-current evidence.
“Rain made the panels look worse.”
Light rain can dissolve soluble material and redeposit it at frame edges, leaving a concentrated band. Wait for a genuinely rinsing event, or use the approved gentle method rather than scrubbing a dry, gritty surface.
“Cleaning did not restore power.”
Confirm that the test area was representative and that irradiance and temperature were comparable before and after cleaning. Persistent losses may come from shading, inverter limits, wiring resistance, sensor errors, degradation or a failed bypass diode.
Maintenance plan for a rooftop or solar plant
- Log daily energy, weather and inverter alarms so a gradual decline is visible.
- Inspect after construction nearby, wildfire smoke, dust storms, pollen peaks, bird activity and snow.
- Keep a clean reference module, sensor or validated performance model in service.
- Map deposition by row and orientation rather than treating the array as uniform.
- Use the least abrasive effective method and document water quality, tools, date and operator.
- After every intervention, verify energy recovery and record whether the result justified the cost.
- Escalate cracked glass, delamination, hot connectors or repeated hotspot indications to a qualified PV technician.
Soiling is easy to overlook because it often has no dramatic visual symptom. Treating it as a measured optical and thermal risk—rather than an automatic cleaning chore—protects output, glass and operating budget.
