Short answer: A panel’s efficiency rating is a laboratory conversion measure, not a promise of how much electricity your roof will produce. Real-world energy yield changes with cell temperature, shade, sunlight, dirt, orientation, system design, age, equipment faults and downtime. Heat usually lowers output, shade can cause larger site-specific losses, modules gradually degrade, and a well-maintained system may operate for decades—but no single percentage or lifespan applies to every installation.
Efficiency and energy yield are different measurements
Panel or cell efficiency is the percentage of sunlight striking a photovoltaic device that is converted into usable electrical energy under defined test conditions. Those conditions make products comparable, but they do not recreate every roof, season or weather pattern.
A homeowner usually cares about energy yield: the electricity the complete system produces over a day, month or year. Yield includes the panel’s conversion capability plus the sunlight available at the site, module temperature, shade, orientation, tilt, soiling, wiring, inverter operation and periods when the system is offline. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) specifically distinguishes energy yield—which accounts for heat, dirt and shade—from laboratory-condition efficiency.
What a higher efficiency rating does—and does not—mean
- On the same roof area and under the same conditions, a higher-efficiency module can produce more power per unit of area.
- It does not guarantee more annual electricity if the higher-rated module is shaded, poorly oriented, overheated or paired with an unsuitable system design.
- It does not by itself establish better financial value. Roof area, local solar resource, equipment costs, electricity rates and installation quality also matter.
Use the rating to compare modules under a common test, then use a site-specific production estimate to judge a proposed system.

Do solar panels become less efficient in heat?
Yes. Solar cells generally work best at low temperatures. As a cell heats up, current may increase slightly, but voltage falls by a much larger amount, so electrical power generally declines. DOE describes this voltage loss as the main reason hot cells produce less power.
Module temperature is not the same as air temperature
A panel can become substantially hotter than the surrounding air because it absorbs sunlight. Wind, mounting clearance, roof material, installation geometry and module construction affect how well heat leaves the back of the panel. Therefore, a forecast based only on the day’s air temperature cannot state the exact output loss.
How much output is lost?
There is no universal hot-weather percentage supported for every panel. The relevant number is the module’s temperature coefficient, normally listed in its technical data sheet, applied to measured or modeled cell temperature and the relevant operating point. Coefficients differ by product and technology. Do not treat a generic internet estimate as a guaranteed loss for your array.

Can heat damage a panel?
Ordinary warm operation does not mean a panel has failed. However, DOE warns that extreme temperatures can damage cell and module materials and shorten operating life. Repeated thermal stress, poor ventilation, manufacturing defects or installation problems can contribute to damage such as delamination or hot spots. A qualified professional should investigate visible browning, bubbles, cracks, scorch marks or an unexplained persistent decline.
How much does shading reduce solar panel output?
Shading reduces the sunlight reaching the array and therefore reduces energy yield. There is no single loss percentage: the result depends on the shaded area, which cells and modules are affected, the time of day and season, and the array’s electrical design.
Why the same shadow can have different effects
- A narrow shadow crossing a critical portion of a module can affect more electrical output than its visible area suggests.
- Shade that lasts for 20 minutes at a high-production time can matter more than shade during a low-sun period.
- Tree growth and the sun’s seasonal path change the pattern over the year.
- Module strings, bypass-diode behavior, inverters and module-level electronics influence how losses are distributed; none of these designs makes shade disappear.
DOE homeowner guidance identifies partial shading as a detrimental operating factor and warns that excessive tree cover can make a roof unsuitable for solar. Before installation, request a shade assessment that covers the full year rather than relying on a single sunny-day observation.

What to check before installing
- Map shade from trees, neighboring buildings, chimneys, vents, dormers and utility structures at different times of day and seasons.
- Ask the installer to show usable roof area after setbacks, access paths and required fire clearances.
- Review the production model’s assumptions for shade, roof orientation, tilt and local solar resource.
- Confirm who owns nearby trees, whether pruning is legally permitted, and whether work can be performed safely.
- Compare the expected annual yield change and intervention cost before choosing tree work, a different roof plane or a different electrical layout.
Options for an existing shaded array
First establish when and where shade occurs using monitoring data or a professional site assessment. Possible responses include safe, permitted vegetation management; moving or redesigning an array when reroofing; or selecting an electrical configuration better suited to unavoidable partial shade. The evidence available here does not quantitatively rank those choices, and pruning may be restricted by ownership, wildlife, local rules or safety hazards. Do not open energized equipment or cut branches near electrical conductors yourself.

Degradation is a gradual reduction in a module’s ability to produce electricity. It is different from a sudden production drop caused by shade, dirt, storms, an inverter fault, wiring damage or downtime.
DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) states: “Age: PV module efficiency unavoidably degrades at about 0.5% per year.” This is an approximate general figure, not a warranty term and not a prediction for an individual module or system. Actual trends depend on weather exposure, solar resource, installation, product construction, maintenance and failures.

What 0.5% per year means mathematically
If a system followed a simple 0.5% annual decline, its capability after one year would be about 99.5% of its starting value. Compounding would put it near 95% after roughly ten years and about 90% after twenty years. Those calculations illustrate the meaning of the rate; they are not a measured forecast for your array and should not replace the manufacturer’s warranty or a site model.
Separate degradation from a fault
A marked change over weeks or months is unlikely to be explained by normal age alone. FEMP identifies module damage—including hot spots, cell cracks, water intrusion and delamination—as possible failures, along with inverter and wiring problems. Dirt, temporary snow, unusual weather, communications outages and curtailment can also distort a short record.
How can I tell whether my solar panels are working efficiently?
Do not compare two unadjusted electricity bills or two sunny days and call the difference degradation. Use the system monitor, inverter records and a production model that accounts for the same solar resource and temperature conditions.

A practical performance-check procedure
- Confirm the record. Check that the monitoring portal is receiving data, the inverter shows normal status, and the comparison periods have the same start and end times.
- Inspect safely from the ground. Look for new shade, heavy soiling, storm damage, cracked glass, browning, bubbling or displaced hardware. Do not remove covers or touch electrical components.
- Compare like with like. Examine daily or monthly production against the installer’s model or a reputable solar-resource dataset for the same period.
- Adjust for conditions. Account for irradiance, temperature, snow, smoke, outages, grid curtailment and seasonal sun angle.
- Check the system-wide pattern. A uniform decline across all strings points to a different investigation than one underperforming string or one module.
- Escalate unexplained losses. Give a qualified solar service professional the monitoring history, alarm codes, weather context and warranty documents.
Performance ratio
FEMP defines performance ratio as actual production divided by modeled production based on the same measured solar resource and temperature data over the selected period, while taking system age into account. This makes it more useful than comparing raw kilowatt-hours from dissimilar weather periods. A low ratio is a signal to diagnose, not proof that panels must be replaced.
How long do solar panels last?
“Lifespan” can mean the period a complete photovoltaic system operates, the period a panel remains installed, or the time a component continues producing at a specified warranty level. Keep those definitions separate.
System-lifespan guidance
DOE/FEMP describes PV systems as having a 20–30-year lifespan. This is system-level guidance, not a guarantee that every component lasts that long or that output remains unchanged.

DOE’s end-of-life management page cites a Berkeley Lab survey of U.S. solar industry professionals reporting that the average operational lifespan of a solar panel increased from around 20 years in 2007 to 25–35 years in 2025. That is a survey average for panels, not a warranty and not an individual-system promise.
Why components may need attention at different times
- Inverters contain power electronics that may require repair or replacement before the modules.
- Wiring, connectors, racking and roof penetrations experience weather, movement and moisture exposure.
- Storms, hail, wind, heat cycles, water intrusion, manufacturing defects and installation quality affect reliability.
- Repairability and the availability of compatible replacement parts influence how long a system remains practical to operate.
Review module, inverter and workmanship warranties separately. A warranty’s duration and coverage conditions do not equal a guaranteed service life.
What should I do if production keeps falling?
- Save monthly production data and inverter event logs before resetting equipment.
- Record new shade sources, construction, tree growth, severe weather and maintenance dates.
- Check whether the monitoring system or utility meter lost communications.
- Ask the installer or service company for a comparison with modeled output using corresponding irradiance and temperature data.
- Request an on-site inspection if the decline is unexplained, localized or accompanied by alarms or visible damage.
- Use warranty procedures for confirmed module, inverter, wiring or installation defects; avoid opening energized equipment.
Key distinctions to remember
| Question | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | Conversion percentage under defined test conditions | A household’s annual or lifetime production |
| Heat | Higher cell temperature generally lowers power through voltage loss | One universal percentage loss for every panel or hot day |
| Shade | Reduced sunlight lowers yield; effects are time-, site- and design-dependent | A universal shade-loss number or a guarantee that electronics remove losses |
| Degradation | FEMP’s approximate general figure is about 0.5% module efficiency loss per year | An individual module’s guaranteed annual decline |
| Lifespan | DOE/FEMP guidance gives 20–30 years for PV systems; a Berkeley Lab survey cited by DOE reports 25–35 years average panel lifespan in 2025 | A warranty or a promise for one installation |
The most reliable answer for a particular roof comes from the module and inverter documentation, a site-specific production model, monitoring records and qualified inspection when needed. Efficiency ratings are useful starting points; measured, condition-adjusted energy yield tells you how the installed system is actually performing.
