SoftBank acquired British AI-chip designer Graphcore in July 2024. Graphcore is now a wholly owned SoftBank subsidiary, but it kept its name, Bristol headquarters and core leadership. The purchase price was not disclosed.

What happened in the SoftBank–Graphcore deal?

Graphcore announced the acquisition on July 11, 2024. It said the company would continue operating under the Graphcore name as a wholly owned SoftBank subsidiary, with its headquarters in Bristol and offices in Cambridge, London, Gdansk and Hsinchu. Graphcore also said it would continue investing in high-skilled jobs. Graphcore’s announcement described the transaction and the company’s plans.

CEO Nigel Toon and CTO and co-founder Simon Knowles remained in leadership roles, and required regulatory approvals had been obtained, according to TechCrunch’s July 2024 report.

Why did SoftBank buy Graphcore?

SoftBank’s stated reason was Graphcore’s chip-design expertise and talent. In an investor Q&A, SoftBank said Graphcore had “exceptional human resources” aligned with AI-chip businesses centered on Arm, and identified gaining those resources as the primary reason for the acquisition. SoftBank’s investor Q&A materials explain that rationale.

SoftBank’s FY2025 report says the acquisition added deep chip-design expertise and helped build an end-to-end chip-design technology stack around Arm, strengthening the group’s position in AI chips. That describes SoftBank’s strategic aim; it does not establish that Graphcore’s technology is superior to competing processors. SoftBank’s FY2025 report discusses the acquisition in that context.

How much did SoftBank pay for Graphcore?

The purchase price was not disclosed by SoftBank or Graphcore. The often-repeated $500 million figure is not a confirmed deal value: TechCrunch reported that Toon disputed that figure and declined to disclose the agreed amount. Treat any specific price estimate as unconfirmed unless the companies publish the terms.

What does Graphcore make?

Graphcore develops semiconductors and software for AI computing. Its signature processor architecture is the intelligence processing unit, or IPU, designed for highly parallel machine-learning workloads. Graphcore has positioned its technology for foundation models, generative-AI applications and scientific discovery. Its announcement describes that mission at Graphcore’s acquisition announcement.

An IPU is an AI-focused processor architecture distinct from a conventional GPU. That distinction alone does not show which processor is faster or better: performance depends on the workload, software ecosystem and system implementation.

Does Graphcore compete with Nvidia?

Graphcore and Nvidia both target AI computing, so they operate in overlapping markets. Graphcore’s IPU differs architecturally from Nvidia’s GPU approach, but a meaningful comparison also depends on software support, workload fit, commercial traction, financing and manufacturing scale. The acquisition does not by itself prove technical superiority or establish that Graphcore has displaced Nvidia in any market.

What does the acquisition mean for Arm and AI chips?

SoftBank’s account frames Graphcore as an addition to its Arm-centered chip strategy: its talent and design expertise can contribute to a broader chip-design stack. The deal combines that capability within SoftBank’s corporate group while Graphcore retains its operating identity. It signals SoftBank’s investment in AI-chip design, not a public guarantee of particular products, performance gains or market share.
