1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a Socket 939 retro build, choose by graphics-card interface and the condition of the individual board before comparing features. ABIT’s AV8, MSI’s K8N Neo2 Platinum and K8T Neo2-FIR, and Gigabyte’s GA-K8NSNXP-939 were all AGP designs in HotHardware’s September 2004 roundup. They support dual-channel DDR memory up to 4GB, but differ in chipset, storage, networking, and extras. None is a universal winner: the best fit depends on the parts and features your build needs.
What the 2004 roundup compares
HotHardware reviewer Marco Chiappetta’s September 9, 2004 comparison covered four enthusiast Socket 939 boards, roughly three months after AMD introduced Socket 939 Athlon 64 processors. The group comprises two VIA K8T800 Pro boards and two NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra boards. HotHardware tested with a 2.4GHz Athlon FX-53 and 2×512MB of memory; that describes the period test setup, not a modern performance recommendation.
| Board | Chipset | Graphics slot | Memory listed in the 2004 specifications | Storage and RAID listed | Notable features |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ABIT AV8 | VIA K8T800 Pro | AGP 8x/4x | Dual-channel DDR400/333/266; four DIMM sockets; up to 4GB | SATA 150 RAID 0/1; other storage details not stated in HotHardware’s 2004 board coverage | uGuru, diagnostic LED, optical S/PDIF, three IEEE 1394 ports, Gigabit Ethernet |
| MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum | NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra | AGP 8x | Dual-channel DDR400/333/266; up to 4GB | Four SATA ports; mixed SATA/ATA RAID 0/1/0+1/JBOD; the 2004 specifications give a 150MB/s SATA transfer-rate figure | Dual Gigabit LAN, three IEEE 1394 ports, eight USB 2.0 ports, 7.1-channel audio |
| MSI K8T Neo2-FIR | VIA K8T800 Pro with VT8237 southbridge | AGP 8x | Four DDR slots; DDR400/333/266; up to 4GB | SATA RAID 0/1 and Promise RAID combinations; the 2004 specifications give a 150MB/s SATA transfer-rate figure | Eight-channel audio, Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire, eight USB 2.0 ports; reviewed retail bundle included an 802.11g adapter |
| Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 | NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra | AGP 8x/4x | Dual-channel DDR400/333/266; up to 4GB | Four SATA connectors, two ATA133 IDE channels, dual RAID controllers; exact RAID modes are not stated in HotHardware’s 2004 specifications | Dual BIOS, dual LAN, FireWire; BIOS controls for CPU, AGP, and DIMM clocks or voltages |
The 150MB/s SATA number is the interface transfer-rate figure quoted in the 2004 specifications, not a promise of real-world drive throughput. Feature lists likewise describe the boards as documented at the time; they do not establish how a particular surviving sample performs today.
Which board fits which build?
ABIT AV8: diagnostics and tuning features
The AV8 is the clear choice among these four if you specifically want its documented uGuru tools, diagnostic LED readout, and overclocking-oriented design. ABIT also highlighted Japanese Rubycon capacitors and “overclocking strips.” Its listed connections include five PCI slots, three IEEE 1394 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and optical S/PDIF. The published feature list supports SATA RAID 0/1; it does not establish the broader RAID combinations of the MSI nForce3 board.

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum: networking and mixed-drive RAID
The K8N Neo2 Platinum stands out for dual Gigabit LAN and RAID that can combine SATA and ATA devices. It also lists four SATA ports, three IEEE 1394 ports, eight USB 2.0 ports, and Realtek ALC850 7.1-channel audio. Its 1GHz HyperTransport specification corresponds to 2,000 MT/s, as stated in HotHardware’s 2004 coverage. Choose it when those particular onboard features are useful, rather than assuming the chipset or historical test results make it faster in a present-day build.
MSI K8T Neo2-FIR: VIA chipset and bundled wireless
The K8T Neo2-FIR is the VIA K8T800 Pro option with a VT8237 southbridge. Its SATA controller supports RAID 0/1, and the board also lists Promise RAID combinations. The reviewed retail bundle included an 802.11g wireless adapter, which may matter if the original accessory is present and working; a used listing does not guarantee that it is included.
Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939: extensive BIOS controls and dual features
Gigabyte marketed this limited-edition board as “6-Dual Deluxe,” highlighting dual BIOS, dual RAID controllers, and dual LAN. Its specification list includes BIOS adjustment of CPU FSB, multiplier, and core voltage, plus AGP and DIMM clock or voltage settings. Those controls make it a strong feature match for an enthusiast build, but board age and condition still matter more than a feature list when buying a used example.
AGP is the key compatibility decision
All four boards in the 2004 comparison use AGP, so they are appropriate only if the graphics card and intended build are compatible with AGP. Do not infer PCI Express support from the Socket 939 name. Gigabyte’s later GA-K8NF-9 is a separate Socket 939 example: its documentation identifies an NVIDIA nForce4-4X chipset and a PCI Express x16 slot. It is not one of the four AGP boards compared here. Verify the exact model and revision on the board itself and in its manual before purchasing.

Socket 939 CPU and memory compatibility
The four reviewed boards list support for Socket 939 Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX processors. Each lists dual-channel DDR memory support up to 4GB, with DDR400, DDR333, and DDR266 speeds in the 2004 specifications. These are DDR modules, not DDR2: the slot and memory type must match the board. A processor’s physical socket match alone does not guarantee that a specific board revision and BIOS will support it.
- Confirm that the CPU is Socket 939, not another Athlon 64 socket variant.
- Check the exact board revision and the CPU support information for its BIOS version.
- Use compatible DDR memory and consult the board manual for DIMM population guidance, especially when mixing modules.
How to assess a used Socket 939 board
These models are legacy products, and current listing availability, prices, and seller quality are not established here. Inspect the specific item rather than relying on the model name or a stock photograph.
Rank #4
- Verify the exact model and revision. Match the printed board markings to the listing and documentation; similarly named Socket 939 boards can have different chipsets and graphics slots.
- Check the graphics and memory interfaces. Confirm AGP versus PCI Express and DDR versus DDR2 before planning around an existing graphics card or RAM kit.
- Ask about CPU and BIOS support. Request the installed BIOS version and evidence that it supports the intended processor.
- Inspect condition and completeness. Look for damaged or leaking capacitors, corrosion, bent pins in the CPU socket, and missing accessories. Check whether the I/O shield, brackets, SATA or IDE cables, and any advertised bundle items are included.
- Request a powered-on demonstration. A clear POST screen is useful evidence that the board starts, though it cannot prove every slot, port, or controller works. Ask about any known faults and, if possible, test the connections your build requires.
Verdict: choose by compatibility, then features
For an AGP-based Socket 939 system, the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum is the feature match for dual Gigabit networking and mixed SATA/ATA RAID; the ABIT AV8 and Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 offer the most clearly documented tuning and diagnostic controls; and the MSI K8T Neo2-FIR suits a VIA preference or a build that can use its original wireless accessory. These are specification-based distinctions from a 2004 comparison, not a new performance ranking. If your build needs PCI Express, look at a different Socket 939 model such as the documented GA-K8NF-9 rather than assuming one of these four will work.
