Access depends on whose data you need, the account type, the platform’s authorization and approval rules, and whether you need on-demand reports, scheduled exports, or eligible public data. Choose the platform route for your use case first; then design your integration around that route’s metrics, limits, and reporting model.
Start with whose data you need
“Social media analytics” can mean several different kinds of data. An API that reports performance for an account you own or manage is not interchangeable with a research program for eligible public data, or with search access used to monitor posts. Before comparing endpoints, write down the data owner, the account or content types, and the decisions your application must support.
- Your own or authorized accounts: Look for the platform’s account-insights or analytics route and confirm its eligible account types and required authorization.
- Channel or content-owner performance: YouTube Analytics supports reports for an authorized channel or content owner.
- Public data for research: TikTok’s Research & Insights offering is a distinct route with eligibility and application requirements; it is not the same thing as reporting on a business account you manage.
- Search or listening: Search and streaming access, such as X’s v2 endpoints, is governed by its access plans and endpoint rules. Do not assume search access grants an analytics entitlement for every account.
This distinction determines what can be collected legally and technically. Do not promise users that your product can retrieve other people’s private account insights just because it can query public posts.
How the main platform routes differ
| Platform or route | What it is suited to | Eligibility and access considerations | Reporting pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Analytics API | Channel or content-owner analytics reports | OAuth 2.0 authorization is required. Confirm the specific scope for the query method you use. | Direct reports query with dates and metrics, optionally shaped by dimensions, filters, and sorting. |
| YouTube Reporting API | Bulk reporting workflows | OAuth 2.0 authorization is required. | Create a report job, list generated reports, then download them. |
| Instagram Graph API via Facebook Login | Insights and related operations for eligible Professional accounts | The Meta-published collection describes Business and Creator accounts; its Facebook Login flow cannot access consumer accounts and requires a Page linked to a Professional Instagram Account. | Instagram-specific endpoints and permissions; verify the current requirements for the fields and actions you need. |
| TikTok Research & Insights | Public-data access for eligible research or commercial analysis uses | Check eligibility and apply. This is not a general substitute for a managed account’s own reporting. | Research tools for approved use cases. |
| TikTok Accounts API | Business or Personal Account reporting/insights and other account operations | TikTok for Business documents an Accounts API access application requirement effective March 20, 2026, 00:00 GMT, for specified new developer apps and scope increases including the TikTok Accounts permission scope. | Platform-specific account API endpoints. |
| X v2 search and streaming | Search or streaming data within the applicable access plan | Enrollment in relevant API access plans is required for some endpoints. Current general pricing and a complete analytics entitlement matrix are not established by the cited X pages. | Endpoint-specific; check the plan, endpoint limits, and error guidance before polling or backfilling. |
The official documentation does not establish that similarly named metrics across these platforms mean the same thing. Keep each platform’s metric definition, entity, dimensions, and reporting window attached to the data you store.

YouTube: choose direct queries or scheduled reports
Google describes YouTube Analytics as a way to retrieve analytics data for a YouTube channel or content owner. A direct query specifies the owner, start and end dates, and at least one metric; dimensions, filters, and sorting are optional ways to shape the report. The YouTube Analytics API reference documents the available metric and dimension model.
Use Analytics queries for request-driven reporting
A direct query is a natural fit when your product needs to request a particular report for a selected date range and return it to a user. Define the report around the fields the user needs rather than assuming a single universal “views” or “engagement” field. The reports.query method is the method reference; confirm its current required OAuth scope rather than relying on a broad assumption based on another endpoint.
Use Reporting for scheduled bulk delivery
The YouTube Reporting API uses a different workflow: create a job, list reports generated for that job, and download each available report. This suits a pipeline designed to ingest bulk files on a schedule rather than to synchronously answer every user query. These are distinct products and workflows, not two names for the same endpoint.
Both routes require OAuth 2.0. Google’s OAuth credentials guidance explains application registration. YouTube Analytics also documents groups of up to 500 channels, videos, playlists, or assets for aggregated performance analysis; treat that as the stated product limit for those group operations, not as a general API quota.
Rank #2
Instagram: verify Professional-account eligibility and linking
The Meta-published Instagram API collection describes Instagram Graph API use for Professional accounts, including Businesses and Creators, and includes insights among the supported use cases. Its Facebook Login flow cannot access consumer Instagram accounts and requires a Facebook Page linked to the Professional Instagram Account.
Use that description as a starting point, not as a substitute for checking the current Meta developer documentation for your exact permission, field, and login configuration. Before building onboarding, determine whether each intended customer has the eligible account type and required Page relationship. If either condition is absent, the integration path described by that collection will not meet the need.
TikTok: keep Research and Accounts API use separate
Research & Insights is for eligible public-data use
TikTok for Developers presents Research & Insights as tools for securely accessing public data for academic research and commercial analysis, with eligibility checks and an application path. Do not describe it as a generally available endpoint for retrieving a customer’s own account analytics.
Accounts API is the account-oriented route
TikTok for Business describes the Accounts API for reporting and insights as well as comment moderation and video publishing for Business or Personal Accounts. Its access rule says that from March 20, 2026 at 00:00 GMT, developers must complete an Accounts API Access Application Form before submitting a new developer app or requesting a scope increase that includes the TikTok Accounts permission scope. Apply this date and requirement to the specified app submissions and scope increases; do not generalize it into a claim that all existing access is automatically revoked on that date.

X’s Query Builder says relevant API access-plan enrollment is required for its v2 search and streaming endpoints. Its error troubleshooting guide explains that a 403 can mean access is refused or unavailable, while a 429 can indicate that an endpoint rate limit or post cap has been reached. These responses point to different problems: a 403 calls for checking entitlement and authorization; a 429 calls for checking the applicable cap and request cadence.
The cited X materials do not establish a current general price or a complete entitlement matrix for analytics. Check the plan and exact endpoint documentation for your account before committing to a data volume, polling schedule, or backfill design.
Choose the route with a decision checklist
- Name the owner of the data. Is it the customer’s authorized account, a YouTube channel/content owner, eligible public research data, or posts found through search?
- Confirm eligibility before prototyping. Check account type, linking requirements, research eligibility, and any app or access-plan application. A successful login alone does not establish access to every report.
- Choose the reporting shape. Use direct query workflows for request-specific reports; use a scheduled bulk route when the platform provides generated files and your pipeline can ingest them.
- List the exact fields and scopes. Verify metric names, entity level, dimensions, date windows, filters, and endpoint-specific OAuth scopes in the current reference.
- Estimate operations from documented limits. Check quotas, rate limits, post caps, pagination, report generation delays, and any retention or refresh restrictions before setting polling frequency.
- Write down non-equivalences. Preserve the platform and source field with every metric; do not merge same-labeled fields unless their definitions and reporting periods actually match.
Build an integration that can survive API differences
Separate authorization from report logic
Keep each platform’s consent, token handling, scopes, and account eligibility in its own adapter. Request only the permissions needed for the selected reports. Record which account is connected and which platform entity the token can access; do not treat a successful authorization as proof that all requested analytics fields are available.
Normalize carefully, preserve the source values
A cross-platform dashboard can present a common interface, but retain the original platform metric name, definition, entity, aggregation dimensions, and time window alongside any normalized label. The official references define different report models, so the safe engineering assumption is that a shared label is not proof of parity. When a field is unavailable or a report omits it, represent that state explicitly rather than silently converting it to zero.

Ingest both immediate and delayed reporting patterns
For direct queries, store request parameters and the returned reporting period with the response. For scheduled reports, track job creation, report availability, download status, and the period represented by each file. A snapshot table keyed by platform, account or entity, metric, and period helps distinguish a newly fetched result from a historical value; snapshots are an implementation technique, not evidence that a platform offers unlimited historical backfill.
Design retries around the response
- On an authorization or access denial, verify the connected account, requested scopes, account eligibility, app review or application status, and endpoint entitlement before retrying.
- On a rate limit or cap response, stop tight polling, consult that endpoint’s current limit guidance, and schedule later work accordingly.
- For scheduled files, make downloads idempotent and keep job/report identifiers so a retry does not create duplicate records.
- Log platform, endpoint, account, period, response status, and retry time without exposing access tokens in logs.
ScreenshotNeo is a visual companion, not an analytics API
If your workflow also needs visual records of authorized analytics pages—for example, to retain a rendered view alongside structured API data—ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first for that screenshot task. It does not replace YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, or X analytics access, and a screenshot is not a machine-readable substitute for an API report. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, made by Yorker Media; its clean-shot handling and billing verdicts make it relevant to visual capture, not to unlocking social platform metrics.
One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, to capture a page you are authorized to access:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
ScreenshotNeo’s plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, then paid options from $5 for 3,000; all features are on every plan. Read more at ScreenshotNeo. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can one API provide analytics for all major social platforms?
No universal API is established by these platform references. Each platform defines its own data access, eligibility, authorization, metrics, and reporting workflow.
Can I use screenshots instead of an analytics API?
Screenshots preserve a rendered page, not structured metric fields. Use them as visual evidence when appropriate, not as a replacement for authorized analytics reports.
