Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUbuntu’s closest equivalent to Windows Snipping Tool is its built-in screenshot interface. On a GNOME desktop it captures the entire screen, an active window, or a selected region without installing software. If you need arrows, blur, text, cropping, or quick sharing, install Flameshot. KDE users may prefer Spectacle. Your Ubuntu release and whether the session is Wayland or X11 determine which shortcuts, permissions, and packages behave as documented.

GNOME Screenshot / gnome-screenshot |
Basic screen, window, or region captures on GNOME Ubuntu | Full screen, active window, user-defined area, clipboard output, delay, pointer inclusion, and file output | The cited Ubuntu manual is for Jammy and lists version 41.0-2; package details can differ by release. |
| Flameshot | Region captures that need immediate annotation or editing | In-app editing, customizable appearance, D-Bus integration, and Imgur upload | Its maintainers describe GNOME Wayland support as experimental and document permission-related failures. |
| Spectacle | KDE Plasma users or anyone wanting several capture modes and annotation | Whole desktop, monitor, active window, cursor window, rectangular area, and annotation | The cited package record is for Ubuntu Questing; verify availability and desktop integration on your release. |
For most Ubuntu GNOME users, start with the built-in tool. Add Flameshot when editing is part of the capture workflow rather than a separate step.
Take a screenshot with Ubuntu’s built-in interface
Open the screenshot controls
Press Print Screen. Recent GNOME-based Ubuntu releases open an on-screen capture bar. Select the screen, window, or area mode, then confirm the capture. If your keyboard has a function layer, use the key combination printed on the keyboard, often Fn+Print Screen.
Capture a selected region
- Press Print Screen.
- Choose the area or rectangular-selection mode.
- Drag around the content you want.
- Release the pointer to capture. Use the displayed save or copy controls for the destination you need.
This is the closest match to a Windows snip: it avoids capturing unrelated windows and does not require a package install.

Capture a window or the whole screen
Choose the active-window mode for one application, or the full-screen mode for every visible monitor area. Check the preview before sharing: window shadows, panels, and multiple monitors can make the result larger than expected.
Use gnome-screenshot from a terminal
The Ubuntu Jammy manual describes gnome-screenshot as a GNOME utility for taking screenshots of the entire screen, a window, or a user-defined area. Its options include clipboard output, delay, pointer inclusion, and file output. Because that manual identifies Jammy and package version 41.0-2, confirm the options on your installed release with man gnome-screenshot or gnome-screenshot --help.
Useful command patterns
# Entire screen, saved with an explicit filename
gnome-screenshot -f "$HOME/Pictures/ubuntu-screen.png"
# Let the utility ask you to select an area
gnome-screenshot -a -f "$HOME/Pictures/ubuntu-area.png"
# Capture the current window
gnome-screenshot -w -f "$HOME/Pictures/ubuntu-window.png"
# Put the capture on the clipboard instead of saving a file
gnome-screenshot -c
Option names and behavior can vary with the installed package. If a flag is rejected, consult the local manual rather than copying options from a different Ubuntu release.
Install and use Flameshot for annotation
Install the Ubuntu package
sudo apt update
sudo apt install flameshot
Flameshot’s official installation guidance lists Ubuntu 18.04 and newer for this APT command. Ubuntu packages can lag behind upstream by several releases, so check the installed version if you need a particular fix or feature. The project also documents AppImage and Flatpak alternatives and lists Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 builds among its CI artifacts; that listing is not a promise about every future release. See the project documentation at flameshot.org before choosing a non-APT build.

Capture and annotate
- Launch Flameshot from the application menu, or run
flameshot gui. - Drag over the region to capture.
- Use the toolbar to draw arrows and rectangles, add text, blur sensitive data, or crop the selection.
- Choose copy, save, or the available upload action.
For repeated use, open your desktop’s keyboard-shortcut settings and assign a shortcut to flameshot gui. Avoid assigning the same key to GNOME’s screenshot action and Flameshot; whichever command wins the desktop shortcut will run.
Wayland, X11, and the “Unable to capture” error
First identify the session:
echo "$XDG_SESSION_TYPE"
wayland and x11 require different capture paths. Flameshot’s own troubleshooting material describes GNOME Wayland support as experimental and reports screenshot permission prompts and “Unable to capture” errors on Ubuntu and Fedora GNOME.
Try the least invasive fixes
- Update Ubuntu and Flameshot, then log out and back in. A stale desktop portal or mixed package versions can prevent capture.
- Run
flameshot guifrom a terminal and read the diagnostic output. - When a screenshot permission prompt appears, allow the request for the current session.
- Review the current Flameshot Wayland troubleshooting page for the portal-permission command appropriate to your installed version before changing permissions. Commands are version- and environment-dependent.
- If you need a dependable basic capture immediately, use GNOME’s built-in screenshot interface, which is integrated with the desktop portal.
Do not assume an X11 workaround is safe on Wayland: changing session type affects security, display behavior, and other applications. Test in a separate login session and revert if it does not solve the problem.
Install and configure Spectacle on KDE
Spectacle is designed for KDE Plasma. The Ubuntu Questing manual lists whole-desktop, monitor, active-window, cursor-window, and rectangular-area capture, along with annotation. On a GNOME Ubuntu installation, it may work as an additional application but will not necessarily integrate as naturally with desktop shortcuts, portals, or notifications. Verify that your Ubuntu release provides the package and that its Plasma dependencies are acceptable before installing it.

Where screenshots are saved and how to copy them
Graphical screenshot tools normally offer an explicit save dialog or copy action. With command-line captures, provide an absolute path such as $HOME/Pictures/ubuntu-area.png so scripts do not silently write into an unexpected working directory. Prefer PNG for UI text and diagrams; use JPEG only when a smaller file is more important than crisp text. If an application contains passwords, tokens, or personal data, annotate or blur before uploading.
Automation and a browser-free alternative
Desktop tools are ideal for a human at an Ubuntu session. For documentation builds, regression checks, or server-side capture, a website screenshot API avoids installing a browser and configuring a display session.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Print Screen does nothing
- Check whether another application or custom shortcut owns the key.
- Try the application menu’s screenshot entry.
- On compact keyboards, try Fn+Print Screen.
The capture is blank or missing a window
- Confirm whether you selected area, window, or full-screen mode.
- On multi-monitor systems, repeat the capture with the correct monitor visible.
- For Flameshot on Wayland, follow its current permission guidance or use GNOME Screenshot.
APT cannot find Flameshot
- Run
sudo apt updateand confirm the Ubuntu release repositories are enabled. - Check the package with
apt policy flameshot. - Use the project’s documented AppImage or Flatpak route if your release does not provide a suitable package.
Annotations are hard to read
- Capture at the display’s native or retina scale when available.
- Use PNG for interface screenshots.
- Zoom the editor before placing text or arrows, then verify the saved file rather than only the preview.
Practical recommendation
Use GNOME’s built-in screenshot controls for ordinary Ubuntu captures and scripts that only need a screen, window, or region. Choose Flameshot when annotation speed matters, but check its Wayland status before making it your only tool. Choose Spectacle when KDE Plasma is your desktop. For automated website images or PDFs, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try because it removes common page clutter, bills only clean successful captures, and starts with 1,000 free screenshots per month.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official Microsoft Snipping Tool for Ubuntu?
The Windows Snipping Tool is not the Ubuntu desktop utility. Ubuntu’s GNOME screenshot interface provides the comparable screen, window, and region capture workflow.
Can I use Flameshot without replacing Ubuntu’s screenshot tool?
Yes. Install Flameshot and launch it with its own menu entry or shortcut; leave the built-in GNOME action available as a fallback, especially on Wayland.
Which format should I use for Ubuntu screenshots?
Use PNG for text, terminals, and interface details. Use JPEG when smaller files matter more than sharp edges; WebP is useful when your receiving system supports it.
