Snapchat says participants are notified when Infinite Retention changes, while a Group Streak continues as long as “most” members participate. The announcement does not define that threshold or spell out exactly what content Infinite Retention keeps.
What Snapchat’s new chat features do
The update is about chat settings and activity inside Snapchat, not a new physical product. The two features address different things: how long a conversation’s content is retained and how Snaps contribute to a streak in a group.

How Infinite Retention works
Infinite Retention is a conversation-level setting rather than a single account-wide switch, according to Snap. It can be enabled separately for each chat, and Snapchat says everyone in that conversation receives a clear notification when the setting changes.

The announcement does not specify exactly which kinds of chat content the setting retains, list all retention controls, or explain how participants can reverse a change. Do not assume from the name alone that every message, media item, or other piece of chat content is saved indefinitely under identical rules.
How Group Streaks work
Group Streaks pool Snaps shared in a group toward a single streak for that group. Snapchat says the streak continues as long as “most” members participate, but it has not published a numerical participation threshold in the announcement. The feature is described as optional and private.

If a Group Streak ends, Snapchat says it can be restored within one week. That is a product rule stated by the company, not a study result. The announcement does not detail the restoration steps.

Snap said the features were ready to roll out broadly after testing, but the announcement does not provide a device-by-device availability schedule or more detailed rollout timing.
