If you want a screen without a built-in camera, the Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the closest fit for a general-purpose smart display. For an Alexa home focused on controlling devices and viewing compatible camera feeds, the Amazon Echo Hub is another camera-free option—but it is a home-control panel, not a like-for-like replacement for a display used for video calls.

Neither choice is sensor-free: camera-free does not mean private by default. Consider microphones, optional sensing features, connected services, and the functions you plan to use before choosing.

Which camera-free display suits your home?

Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen): a general-purpose display without a camera

The Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the more natural option if you want a screen for Google Assistant and Google Home functions but do not want an integrated camera. Its lack of a camera also means it cannot provide video calls through a built-in camera. Google documents a microphone-based sleep-sound feature and other sensing options, so the absence of a camera should not be mistaken for the absence of microphones or sensors. See Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub for feature details.

Amazon Echo Hub: a control panel for Alexa households

Echo Hub is designed chiefly as a smart-home control device. Amazon describes using it to manage compatible devices and routines and view compatible camera feeds; it also has a microphone-off button. It does not have a built-in camera, and its role is different from a general-purpose display intended for integrated video calls. Amazon’s overview is at Amazon’s Echo Hub is available now—here’s how it works.

When a camera-equipped display may still be the better choice

If you rely on video calls from the display or want a screen that can act as a camera for monitoring, a camera-free device may not meet your needs. A camera-equipped model may offer a physical shutter, software controls, or feature-specific privacy settings, but the exact options differ. Decide whether you need calls, remote viewing, presence detection, or another camera function, then check how that particular model handles each one.

Google Nest Hub Max: distinguish setup from everyday sensing

Google says that certain enabled on-device camera-sensing features on Nest Hub Max, including Face Match and Quick Gestures, do not send video or images to Google after setup. Face Match setup is a separate stage: Google says photos captured by phone for creating a face model are sent to Google during setup. Those statements concern the named sensing features; they should not be extended to video calling, Nest Cam monitoring, or every camera use. Google’s explanations are in its Nest Security & Privacy Commitments and Privacy Hub.

Echo Show: check the specific Home Monitoring behavior

Amazon’s Home Monitoring help explains that an Echo Show can provide remote live viewing and describes routines triggered when a person is nearby. For that presence-detection feature, Amazon Alexa Help states: “All processing of camera views to detect presence is done by the Echo Show device. It sends no video or images to the cloud.” The documentation also describes an optional chime when the camera feed is accessed and a delay that blurs the first few seconds. These details are specific to Home Monitoring and do not establish that every Echo Show camera or microphone function stays local. See Amazon Alexa Help: Home Monitoring.

What camera-free does—and does not—change about privacy

A camera-free device removes one potential source of video capture, but it can still have microphones, other sensors, an account connection, and cloud-based services. The Nest Hub (2nd Gen), for example, has microphones and optional sleep-sound tracking. Google says some Nest Hub functions, including Google Meet calling and home monitoring with Nest Cam, rely on sending audio recordings and video footage to Google. The privacy effect therefore depends on the device and the features enabled, not just whether its hardware includes a camera.

Controls are useful, but their scope matters. A microphone mute switch affects microphone input; it does not by itself describe what other sensors or connected services do. Camera settings, shutters, access chimes, delayed video, and deletion controls each address particular functions. Read the relevant model’s documentation and settings rather than treating one control as a blanket guarantee that nothing is collected or transmitted. Google describes microphone controls and visual indicators in its Nest privacy commitments; Amazon documents Echo Show Home Monitoring controls in its Home Monitoring help.

How to choose the right alternative

  1. Decide whether you need calls or monitoring. If integrated video calls or camera-based monitoring are essential, compare camera-equipped models and their specific controls. If not, a camera-free model may be sufficient.
  2. Match the device to your platform. Choose Nest Hub (2nd Gen) for a camera-free Google display use case; choose Echo Hub if Alexa-based smart-home control and compatible camera feeds are the priority.
  3. Check the exact privacy functions. Look for a separate camera control or shutter, microphone mute, indicators or access notifications, and the settings governing optional sensing and cloud-connected features.
  4. Confirm local availability and compatibility. Verify the model generation, regional availability, retailer listing, supported calling services, and compatibility with your devices before purchase.

What security research on smart displays can tell you

A 2024 forensic paper examined one Amazon Echo Show 15 and reported local usage artifacts and an insecurely stored token used to obtain access to some remote user artifacts. The paper describes findings from that examined device and configuration; it does not establish how common the issue is across Echo Show devices, other smart displays, current software versions, or ordinary consumer use. Read the paper, “Started Off Local, Now We’re in the Cloud: Forensic Examination of the Amazon Echo Show 15 Smart Display”, in that limited scope.

What about Lenovo Smart Displays?

Lenovo’s older Smart Display FAQ describes a camera privacy shutter and microphone mute switch. Those controls may help explain the distinction between physically covering a camera and muting a microphone, but the support page does not establish that Lenovo Smart Display models are currently available.
