A faint chemical, varnish, or warm-electronics odor from a new power supply can be normal, but a distinctly burnt smell is not something to burn in. Shut down and unplug the computer if the odor is strong, worsening, acrid, or accompanied by smoke, crackling, unusual heat, melted plastic, visible damage, or crashes. Inspect only from the outside, never open the PSU, and use the seller’s exchange or the manufacturer’s warranty process when in doubt.

Normal new-PSU odor versus a warning sign

People often call several different smells “burning.” Odor alone cannot identify whether the source is transformer varnish, cable insulation, a connector, a graphics card, a motherboard voltage regulator, dust, or an external power strip. Use the following as a cautious triage guide, not as a laboratory diagnosis.

More likely a temporary new-electronics odor Treat as a possible fault
Faint chemical, varnish, or warm-electronics smell Acrid electrical or burnt-plastic smell
Noticeable only close to the PSU exhaust Strong enough to fill the room
Clearly fades during normal use Gets stronger, especially during gaming or other high load
No smoke, unusual noise, excessive heat, damage, or instability Smoke, sizzling, crackling, sparking, melting, discoloration, crashes, reboots, freezes, or loss of display

Corsair says some new transformers can release odor from varnish used to impregnate their coils. Its support guidance allows approximately one to two weeks after energization for that smell to dissipate; this is Corsair’s model-specific guidance, not a universal safe burn-in period for every brand or PSU. A harmless odor should be mild and trend downward, not intensify. See Corsair’s odor guidance.

A used, refurbished, or older PSU moved into a more demanding computer should not automatically receive the “new transformer” explanation. Corsair also notes that older transformers may smell when exposed to a higher load than before.

MSI MAG A750GL PCIE5, Fully Modular Compact Gaming 750W Power Supply, 80+ Gold, ATX 3.1 & PCIe 5.1 Ready, Native Dual-Color 12V-2x6 Cable, 10 Year Warranty
  • 80 PLUS GOLD CERTIFIED
  • 10-year limited warranty, guaranteeing long term reliable operation
  • Fully modular design
  • ATX 3.1 & PCIE 5.1

What to do immediately

  1. Shut down safely. If there is no smoke, arcing, or rapidly increasing heat, save your work and shut down normally.
  2. Disconnect power for an urgent hazard. If you see smoke or sparks, hear crackling, feel rapidly increasing heat, or smell strong burning, switch off the PC and unplug it from the wall immediately if you can do so safely. Turn the PSU’s rear switch off after shutdown, if accessible.
  3. Let everything cool. Do not repeatedly power-cycle the system to see whether the odor disappears.
  4. Inspect externally only. Check the PSU casing and exhaust, AC cord and wall plug, modular sockets and cable ends, the motherboard 24-pin connector, CPU EPS connector, GPU power plugs, SATA/Molex connectors, and nearby dust, packing material, or cable ties.
  5. Look for physical evidence. Stop using the system if you find browning, blackening, softened or melted plastic, loose pins, discoloration, frayed insulation, or heat damage.
  6. Document the condition. Photograph the PSU label, serial number, cables, and any damaged connector before contacting the retailer or manufacturer.

Do not put your nose or hand inside the PSU grille. Smell around external airflow paths and connectors only after the computer is unplugged and cool.

Can you keep using it?

Limited monitoring may be reasonable

Continued brief observation is reasonable only when all of these conditions apply:

  • The odor is faint and resembles new varnish or warm electronics rather than acrid burning insulation.
  • There is no smoke, noise, visible damage, excessive heat, or system instability.
  • The smell is clearly fading with use.
  • The PSU is installed according to its manual and uses the correct cables.

Stay with the computer during the first test period and avoid prolonged high-load “burn-in” sessions. A PC that boots and appears stable is not proof that its PSU is safe.

Stop using it and arrange replacement

Disconnect the unit and pursue a return or RMA when the smell is strong, persists without improvement, worsens after several uses, or is clearly burnt plastic or electrical insulation. Immediate discontinuation is also warranted for smoke, buzzing, crackling, sparking, unusual heat, a discolored or melted connector, or crashes, reboots, freezes, display loss, and other power symptoms. AMD’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking PSU capacity, connections, airflow, and—when possible—testing symptoms with a known-good PSU; it does not make a burning odor safe. See AMD’s PSU troubleshooting guidance.

Check every cable and connector

A smell blamed on the PSU may actually come from a high-current connector, cable, graphics card, motherboard CPU-power socket, wall plug, surge protector, UPS, or extension lead. If only the wall plug or power strip smells, stop using that outlet or accessory and have it replaced or professionally checked.

Modular cables are not universal

Never assume a modular cable is safe because its connector fits. Pin assignments can differ between PSU models, including models from the same brand. Use only the cables supplied with that exact PSU unless the manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility. Replace every modular cable when changing PSU models rather than reusing the old set. Corsair’s PSU safety manual warns that non-manufacturer cables can cause serious damage.

  • Hold up time is 16 millisecond minimum within 60 percent load. Input frequency range 50 - 60 in Hz

Where to inspect

  • GPU power connector and the cable near the plug
  • CPU EPS connector at the motherboard’s top edge
  • 24-pin motherboard connector
  • SATA and Molex power plugs
  • All modular sockets at the PSU end
  • AC cable, wall plug, surge protector, UPS, and extension cord

A connector can suffer electrical damage without obvious melting. If any plug is hot, loose, difficult to insert, discolored, or smells strongly, stop testing and replace or service the affected hardware.

Fan behavior and voltage testing

A stopped PSU fan is not automatically a failure

Many modern PSUs use zero-RPM or semi-passive modes, so the fan may remain off at low load. Consult the specific model’s manual. Excessive heat, blocked airflow, or abnormal behavior under load still requires shutdown and support; AMD advises checking airflow and normal fan operation when troubleshooting power symptoms.

Do not use BIOS readings as a safety clearance

Software or BIOS voltage values cannot reliably rule out an internal PSU fault. Do not open the PSU or probe live connectors if you are inexperienced. A basic PSU tester provides limited pass/fail information; a multimeter requires care and does not reproduce transient or load behavior; professional electronic-load testing is more meaningful but usually unnecessary for a new unit that can be returned. Substitution with a known-good PSU can help diagnose crashes, provided its own manufacturer-approved cables are used.

When to return or warranty the PSU

For a recent purchase, use the retailer’s return or exchange window first; it is usually simpler than a manufacturer claim. If that window has closed, contact the PSU maker’s support or RMA channel. Policies depend on brand, country, seller, purchase date, and product revision.

EVGA’s published policy, for example, describes its PSU warranty and RMA process and says an eligible new-in-box product within 30 days may receive a new-in-box OEM replacement subject to availability. That is an EVGA-specific example, not a promise from other brands or retailers. See EVGA’s PSU warranty page. MSI provides a separate power-supply support portal.

Include this information with your claim

  • Exact PSU model, revision, and serial number
  • Purchase date and seller
  • When the odor appears and whether it fades or worsens
  • Whether it occurs only under gaming or other load
  • Photos of the PSU, cables, plugs, and connectors
  • Any smoke, noise, heat, discoloration, melting, crashes, or shutdowns
  • Confirmation that the PSU has not been opened or modified

What not to do

  • Do not open or repair the PSU. High voltage can remain present after it is unplugged, and the Corsair manual states that the unit has no user-serviceable components.
  • Do not keep gaming for hours to “burn it in.” A worsening odor under load is a stop condition.
  • Do not reuse unconfirmed modular cables. Matching connectors do not guarantee matching wiring.
  • Do not repeatedly power-cycle a strongly burning unit.
  • Do not treat “nothing looks melted” or “the PC still works” as clearance.

Odor only during gaming

Heat-related connector, cable, GPU, or PSU problems become more likely when the smell appears only under load. Stop high-load testing and inspect after cooling.

Hot PSU with a stopped fan

Zero-RPM operation can be normal at low load, but excessive heat or heat under load is not a reason to continue testing. Follow the model’s manual and contact support.

Bottom line

A faint, temporary new-electronics smell can occur, and Corsair documents a one-to-two-week odor window for some new transformers. That does not make every “burning” smell normal. If the odor is acrid, strong, worsening, persistent, or paired with smoke, heat, noise, visible damage, or instability, unplug the system, do not open the PSU, and obtain a retailer exchange or manufacturer replacement.
