Before installing a Slack integration, confirm that it solves a real workflow need, then check whether its requested permissions fit that job, what the developer discloses about data handling, and who must approve it. A Marketplace listing is useful evidence—not a guarantee: Slack says it does not endorse or certify Marketplace apps.
How do I evaluate a Slack app before installing it?
Use the same review for every candidate app. Start with the work it will do, then assess its access, disclosures, administrative approval path, and ongoing need. If comparing alternatives, apply the same criteria to each rather than assuming a Marketplace listing makes one option safer.
- Define the purpose. Ask the requester to describe the workflow, who will use the app, and the expected benefit. Check whether an existing Slack app or another tool already covers the task, how long the integration is needed, how often it is expected to post, and whether it adds a license or subscription cost. Slack recommends considering these questions in an app approval policy: Manage app approval for your workspace.
- Translate every requested scope into plain language. Identify what information the app can view and what it can post or change. Compare each capability with the stated workflow; ask the requester or developer to explain access that seems broader than the task requires.
- Read the developer’s disclosures. Review the listing’s privacy policy and, if provided, its Security & Compliance information. Compare those disclosures with your organization’s requirements. Do not infer a certification from the presence of security information.
- Choose the correct approval route. Check whether workspace-level approval is required and whether the request involves organization-level installation or access. Have the relevant owner, app manager, or enterprise administrator review the scopes and installation level before approving.
- Reassess material changes. If an app later requests new scopes, review the updated permissions instead of relying on its original approval. Slack says new scopes may require the app to be requested again: Understand app permissions.
What permissions does this Slack app need?
Slack scopes describe the information an app may access and the actions it may take. The installation or approval flow shows the requested scopes; read the full list rather than relying only on the listing’s description. Slack broadly groups app capabilities into viewing information, posting information, and performing actions: Slack API scopes.
For each scope, ask what the app needs it for and whether that capability is proportionate to its job. For example, an app intended to send a scheduled update should have a clear reason for any access that lets it read messages or files, modify content, or create channels. Treat these as prompts to investigate, not as proof that a particular scope is unnecessary: the answer depends on the app’s actual workflow.

- Information access: What workspace information can it view, including messages or files?
- Posting: Where can it send information, how often is it expected to post, and who will see it?
- Actions: Can it modify content or create channels, and does the requested action directly support the stated purpose?
Ask the requester or developer to explain access that is not readily connected to the app’s function. Where Slack offers optional scopes during review, an approver may be able to select which ones to allow. Slack’s guidance on app review is available in Manage app approval for your workspace.
What does a Slack Marketplace listing tell you—and what does it not?
A listing may provide the developer’s privacy policy and security or compliance information the developer has submitted. Read that material for details relevant to your organization, but distinguish disclosures from independent assurance. Such information may not be present for every app, and its presence alone does not establish a particular certification.

Slack’s official guidance states: “Though we review all apps in the Slack Marketplace, including their requested permissions, Slack doesn’t endorse or certify these apps.” See Slack’s recommendations for approving apps. Marketplace review therefore should not replace your organization’s assessment of purpose, access, disclosures, and approval requirements.
Who should approve the app?
Approval controls depend on the workspace and organization setup. Workspace owners can enable app approval, pre-approve or restrict apps, and determine whether members can request apps that are not approved. For Enterprise organizations, administrators should also examine organization-level installations and access levels. Slack notes that certain apps using admin, Discovery, or SCIM APIs can access the data they need at the organization level. Confirm that this installation level is needed for the app’s function rather than treating it as equivalent to a routine workspace installation. See Manage apps for your Enterprise organization.
Allowing only Marketplace apps is not necessarily a complete control: Slack says that setting does not prevent members from creating and installing internal apps. If your organization needs tighter control, review the separate internal app controls described in Slack’s Enterprise app guidance.

How should you compare two Slack integrations?
Assess each candidate using the same questions. A compact comparison helps expose trade-offs without implying that one app is safer based on its listing alone.

When should an existing approval be reviewed again?
Revisit approval when the app’s requested scopes change. Slack says new scopes may require another request so an owner or app manager can review them. Treat the new request as a material change: inspect the updated permission list and ask why the additional access is needed before granting it. Original approval covers the original request, not automatically every later scope expansion.
