Then use Show on Map to see whether the game has a target even though it is not appearing where you expect. If an NPC or quest step still will not progress, try the less disruptive recovery steps before loading an earlier save.
1. Confirm the right quest and objective are active
Skyrim’s active quest determines which quest targets appear on the compass and maps. Bethesda’s PS3 manual documents this behavior, though its button prompts should not be treated as universal controls for current editions. Bethesda Support likewise recommends reviewing the Quests log and checking available markers when you are unsure how to complete a quest (Bethesda Support; Skyrim manual).
- Open the Quests log using the controls for your platform.
- Select the quest you want to track and read its current objective.
- If you are following a miscellaneous objective, make sure that objective is active rather than assuming every journal entry displays a target.
If the wrong quest or objective was active, selecting the intended one should clarify which target the compass and maps are meant to show.
2. Check the target with Show on Map
From the quest log, use Show on Map to inspect the objective’s location. The manual describes this function as opening the world map and displaying the quest target. This helps distinguish a missing HUD or compass marker from a target that is present on the map but somewhere unexpected.

If you intend to fast travel from the map, first make sure any special animation has ended. Bethesda warns that using Show on Map to fast travel while mounting a carriage or sitting in a chair can leave controls locked after loading. If that happens, load a save from before the fast travel and wait for the animation to finish before trying again (Bethesda Support).
3. Refresh a missing or frozen quest NPC
If the objective depends on an NPC who is absent or frozen, travel to another area, spend some time elsewhere, then return and check again. Bethesda recommends leaving and returning so the area can reset; its Nintendo Switch guidance gives the same general advice (Bethesda Support; Bethesda Support for Nintendo Switch).

4. Let visible queued actions finish
In some saves, Bethesda says actions attempted earlier may be queued and resolve later after a game update. If you load into a game where old actions are visibly catching up, wait in a safe area or while paused until that activity stops, then make a new save. This advice applies to the described delayed-action condition; it does not explain every missing marker or stuck quest (Bethesda Support).
5. Reload an earlier save only if the quest remains broken
If the NPC or objective still does not recover, Bethesda’s guidance is to reload an earlier save and retry the quest step. When possible, make a separate manual save first so you can preserve your current progress. Reverting can discard everything done after the earlier save, so use it only after the checks above have failed (Bethesda Support).

When these steps do not restore the marker
The sources here do not establish one marker-visibility toggle or menu path that applies to every Skyrim platform and edition. The PS3 manual documents quest activation, but does not confirm current labels for Special Edition, Anniversary Edition, PC, or modern consoles. For a modded game, fixes can depend on the exact setup; the guidance above does not verify a mod-specific remedy.
When asking for help, include your platform, Skyrim edition, quest name, and installed mod list. That information helps distinguish a display problem from a quest-state issue without applying instructions meant for another game.
