Skydance announced on October 26, 2026, that employees across the company will eventually be required to work in the office five days a week. The policy will be introduced in phases by location rather than on one company-wide start date. Employees are promised advance notice before their local change, while eligible staff are being offered a one-time voluntary buyout with individualized terms.
What exactly did Skydance announce?
Chairman and CEO David Ellison and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz outlined the policy in a staff memo issued as Skydance integrates Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. The memo says the company will adopt a five-day in-office policy across Skydance, covering the combined organization rather than only a particular legacy business or headquarters.
The announcement does not say that every employee must report five days immediately. Implementation is location-based, and the company says employees will receive ample notice before the requirement begins at their site. Managers are expected to support the transition.

The available information also does not identify which offices move first, how much notice each location will receive, or whether certain roles can remain remote. Employees should rely on direct notices from Skydance and their managers rather than assume that the policy starts on October 26.
Why is Skydance requiring employees to work in person?
Management presents the change as a culture and collaboration decision. Ellison and Kreiz wrote that “in-person collaboration is vital to our culture and to the success of our business.” They said being together should encourage idea-sharing, problem-solving, learning, coaching, relationship-building and the informal conversations that can generate creative work.
Those are the executives’ stated reasons, not independent measurements showing that a five-day schedule will produce a particular productivity or financial result. The memo does not provide a study, performance target or productivity comparison supporting the policy.

Who qualifies for the voluntary buyout?
Skydance describes the buyout as a one-time voluntary offer running alongside the office-policy change. Employees who qualify are to receive personalized details and terms, followed by a decision window.
The company has not published eligibility rules, payment amounts, a target number of departures or acceptance totals. The combined company is also undertaking a large cost-reduction program. The Los Angeles Times reported that Skydance carries more than $80 billion in acquisition debt and that Paramount had promised Wall Street $6 billion in cuts over three years, including $2 billion expected within a year. Trade reporting says executives are targeting more than $6 billion in savings, with much of the plan expected to come from technology, marketing, real-estate rationalization and combining streaming technology systems rather than from labor alone. Those savings are targets or management context, not completed results.

Did Paramount already have a five-day office policy?
Yes. Paramount Skydance’s 2025 Form 8-K described a phased return-to-office plan that began in January 2026 and moved employees in the Los Angeles and New York offices to full-time, five-day attendance. Approximately 600 employees chose voluntary severance instead of returning during that first phase.
That earlier filing also identified at least $3 billion in expected run-rate efficiencies and listed technology, global operations, real-estate optimization, organizational consolidation and workforce changes as transformation workstreams. The earlier severance figure should not be confused with the new Skydance-wide buyout: the current program has no public acceptance count or standardized terms.

How many employees could be affected?
Reuters estimated that the combined company would have about 53,000 employees, using legacy annual filings. That is an estimate rather than a current official Skydance headcount disclosure, and the number of people ultimately subject to the five-day requirement could be lower or otherwise differ by role, location and future workforce changes.
Regional employment effects may also be significant. The Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity and Los Angeles County Film Office estimated that as many as 4,500 Los Angeles County jobs could be eliminated over three years. That estimate concerns the wider restructuring environment, not a confirmed count of jobs lost because of the office policy.
What should employees do before their location changes?
- Wait for the local notice. The company has not released a universal effective date, so do not infer one from the announcement date.
- Read the individualized buyout information if you receive it. Check the response deadline, payment structure, benefits treatment and any conditions before deciding.
- Ask management or human resources about role-specific rules. Public materials do not yet explain exceptions, accommodations, travel expectations or how hybrid arrangements will be handled.
