SK hynix’s Platinum P51 is the company’s first consumer PCIe 5.0 SSD. It is an M.2 2280 NVMe drive offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities, with rated sequential reads of up to 14,700 MB/s. To use its PCIe 5.0 x4 link, your system needs a compatible Gen5 x4 M.2 slot; in an earlier-generation slot, it cannot operate at Gen5 link capability.
What is the SK hynix Platinum P51?
The Platinum P51 is an internal M.2 2280 NVMe SSD built for a PCIe 5.0 x4 connection. Tom’s Hardware reported in July 2025 that it is SK hynix’s first consumer PCIe 5.0 SSD. The drive uses SK hynix’s in-house ACNT093 (Alistar) controller, 238-layer 3D V8 TLC NAND, and LPDDR4 DRAM. Tom’s Hardware’s P51 coverage
The NAND is part of SK hynix’s 3D NAND development. The company announced development of 238-layer NAND in August 2022 and a mass-production milestone in June 2023. SK hynix’s 2022 announcement and 2023 mass-production announcement
How fast is the P51, and what are its rated specifications?
SK hynix’s P51 ratings reported by Tom’s Hardware are maximum sequential figures, not a promise of the same speed in every workload. Actual results depend on the host system and workload. The figures below distinguish the capacities where the write rating differs.

| Capacity | Maximum sequential read | Maximum sequential write | Endurance rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB | 14,700 MB/s | 12,900 MB/s | 600 TBW |
| 2TB | 14,700 MB/s | 13,400 MB/s | 1,200 TBW |
TBW means terabytes written: the rated total amount of data written over the drive’s endurance rating. Tom’s Hardware reported a five-year warranty for the P51. Check the warranty terms for the product and market where you buy it. Tom’s Hardware’s P51 coverage
Does the P51 need a PCIe 5.0 motherboard?
To use the drive’s Gen5 link capability, the M.2 slot must support PCIe 5.0 x4. PCIe 5.0 signaling is 32 GT/s per lane; a four-lane link provides the interface used by the P51. PCI-SIG’s integrator registry records SK hynix Gen5 x4 NVMe products at 32 GT/s. PCI-SIG integrator registry

- Compatible with all systems that support M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4
Before buying, check the motherboard or system manual for the exact M.2 slot’s generation and lane configuration. An M.2 2280 socket alone does not establish that it supports PCIe 5.0 x4. The available evidence here establishes the drive’s Gen5 interface, but does not specify its negotiated behavior or performance in every older-generation host.
Which P51 capacity should you choose?
Choose 1TB if
- You need less capacity and the lower launch U.S. price is relevant to your comparison.
- Its 600 TBW endurance rating is sufficient for your expected write workload.
Choose 2TB if
- You need twice the listed capacity and want the higher rated sequential-write ceiling of 13,400 MB/s.
- You prefer the higher 1,200 TBW endurance rating.
Tom’s Hardware reported U.S. launch MSRPs of $169.99 for 1TB and $269.99 for 2TB. These are launch list prices, not current offers; current price and stock need to be checked with retailers. Tom’s Hardware’s P51 coverage

- COMPATIBILITY: Internal SSD designed for seamless integration with systems supporting 2.5-inch SATA storage devices.
Is the Platinum P51 worth considering?
The P51 is a plausible fit if your system has a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot and you want a high-rated sequential-throughput drive from SK hynix. Capacity, endurance, warranty, and the actual price available to you also matter. The published maximum sequential figures alone do not establish sustained-write performance, thermal behavior, random-workload results, or value against competing Gen5 SSDs; those require comparable independent testing and current prices.
SK hynix’s Gen5 portfolio also includes PCB01 for AI PCs and PS1012 U.2 for AI data centers, but those are separate products and not consumer alternatives to the M.2 P51. SK hynix newsroom
