If SingleFileZ will not save a page, first identify where the failure occurs: does the save never start, is it unusually slow, does the downloaded file lack content, or does the completed file refuse to open? These are different problems with different fixes. A failure on just one extension-store page may be a browser security restriction; a failure on local files may require file-URL access. SingleFileZ has been merged into SingleFile, so current settings and guidance may appear under the successor project.
First identify what is failing
Try saving a normal public webpage, then compare the result with the page that failed. Note whether the problem happens on every page or only one, and whether the target is a website or a file already on your computer.
- Nothing happens or the save does not start: check for a protected browser domain, a local-file permission issue, or an extension conflict.
- The save takes a long time: some page-size optimizations can increase processing time.
- A file downloads but content is missing: investigate capture limitations or resource-loading options.
- The file saves but will not open: check its format and the browser’s requirements for opening it.
Check for a browser security restriction
Browsers block extensions from running on certain domains for security. SingleFileZ’s FAQ describes this limitation, and SingleFile’s troubleshooting documentation gives Chrome Web Store and Mozilla add-on pages as examples. If saving fails only on an extension-store page, try an ordinary webpage as a comparison; the restriction does not by itself mean the extension is broken. Allow access when the target is a local file
If the page you are trying to process is already on your computer, Chromium may require the extension’s Allow access to file URLs permission. Open the browser’s extension management page, find the extension’s settings, and enable that permission if the browser provides it. This applies to filesystem pages; it is separate from browser restrictions on protected websites. SingleFile troubleshooting guidance

Work through the maintainer’s checklist
When there is no obvious cause, try these steps in order. Menu names vary by browser, and private browsing may need to be enabled for the extension separately.
- Try saving the page in an incognito or private window.
- If that does not help, reset SingleFile’s options to their defaults.
- Restart the browser and test again.
- Disable other extensions and retry. If this fixes the problem, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict.
- If it still fails, report the issue with a short description and reproducible steps, including the page type and what happens when you try to save.

If saving is slow, reduce costly processing selectively
SingleFileZ’s defaults favor smaller output files. The FAQ says processing can take longer when it removes hidden elements and unused styles. To test whether these optimizations are the bottleneck, change one setting at a time and compare both save time and output.
- In options, try disabling HTML content > remove hidden elements.
- Try disabling Stylesheets > remove unused styles.
- Do not turn off frame removal or deferred-image saving casually: the FAQ warns that doing so can leave some frames or images out of the saved page.

If the saved page is missing images, frames, or interactive content
A completed download with incomplete content is a capture problem, not a failure to save the file. SingleFile’s FAQ documents several cases:
- Images missing after a cross-origin request error: some sites require a
Refererheader for image requests. SingleFile documents an option to pass that header after such an error; look for the corresponding setting in the current version. - Canvas images or video snapshots missing: browser security restrictions can prevent their capture.
- Maps, carousels, or other controls no longer work: scripts are removed by default, so interactive elements may not function in the saved file.
- Frames or deferred images absent: check whether related saving or removal options were changed, particularly if adjusting settings to speed up processing.
For current option names and details, consult the SingleFile FAQ. These behaviors are documented for the successor project and may not match every SingleFileZ version exactly.

If the file saved but will not open
First check which format was saved. Self-extracting files have browser-specific opening requirements and are not the same as a regular HTML file. The SingleFileZ FAQ says these files need JavaScript enabled; it also documents filesystem restrictions in Chrome and different behavior in Firefox and Safari. Because the project has merged into SingleFile, check the current project’s File format option and FAQ before relying on version-specific steps.
