Yes. At FOSDEM, SiFive demonstrated Linux running on its HiFive Unleashed development board, built around the 64-bit Freedom U540 (FU540) RISC-V SoC. Announced on February 7, 2018, it was a real-board milestone—not evidence that every Linux distribution or application was already ready for RISC-V.

What RISC-V board did SiFive boot Linux on?

The demonstration used the HiFive Unleashed, a development board built around SiFive’s Freedom U540 (FU540) SoC. SiFive described the U540 as a 64-bit, 4+1 multicore chip designed to support full-featured operating systems, including Linux. The company announced the board and demonstration on February 7, 2018, after showing it at FOSDEM. SiFive co-founder and CTO Yunsup Lee called the announcement “a historic moment and a major milestone for RISC-V.”

The board paired the U54-MC application-core cluster with an S51 monitor core. SiFive’s product page lists 8GB of ECC DDR4, 32MB of Quad SPI flash, removable MicroSD storage, Gigabit Ethernet, and a ChipLink expansion port. Those are vendor-listed specifications, not independent performance measurements.

What did the Linux milestone establish—and what did it not?

The board demonstration showed that Linux could run on a physical RISC-V development platform, rather than only on a processor design or in an emulator. It did not mean that all Linux software was already ported, that every distribution supported the board, or that RISC-V systems had reached feature parity with other architectures.

The kernel work was already progressing before the demonstration. In a December 5, 2017 technical update, SiFive said core RISC-V support had been accepted into Linus Torvalds’s tree for the then-planned Linux 4.15 release. The work described included device-tree bindings, early boot and initialization, some interrupt and timer infrastructure, and paging/MMU support. SiFive also cautioned that substantial kernel and user-space work remained. Linux 4.15 is historical context, not a current version recommendation.

Earlier, on October 6, 2017, SiFive introduced its U54-MC core IP as a 64-bit quad-core application processor with Linux, Unix, and FreeBSD support. That description was vendor product information; it was not an independent benchmark. In September 2018, SiFive described releasing FU540-C000 bootloader code that could be imported into projects such as U-Boot, Coreboot, or TianoCore, while noting that the broader open-source chip effort was still incomplete.

Can you still buy the HiFive Unleashed?

SiFive currently marks the HiFive Unleashed as discontinued. That status does not establish whether any particular retailer or reseller has remaining inventory, so check the seller and board condition rather than assuming it is available new.

What is SiFive’s current Linux development board?

SiFive’s current development-platform catalog includes the HiFive Premier P550. Its product page describes it as a Linux development platform with Ubuntu 24.04 pre-installed. The P550 is a separate, newer platform—not a continuation of the Unleashed’s U540 hardware. SiFive says it uses an ESWIN EIC7700X SoC with a quad-core SiFive P550 cluster; the page lists 16GB or 32GB LPDDR5 and 128GB eMMC. Product details and software offerings can change, so consult the product page for current status.

How can developers build Linux for SiFive RISC-V hardware?

SiFive’s Freedom SDK for Linux provides a Yocto/OpenEmbedded reference distribution with targets for HiFive boards, evaluation platforms, and QEMU. SiFive says its source package includes bootloaders and OpenSBI. It is a software route for building and customizing Linux; it does not imply that every target has identical hardware support or that every distribution is compatible.
