The report that Shutterfly was dealing with ransomware refers to an incident the company disclosed on December 26, 2021—not an attack established as ongoing in 2026. Shutterfly said the incident affected parts of its network, but explicitly said Shutterfly.com, Snapfish, TinyPrints and Spoonflower were not impacted. Its initial statement did not settle whether other information was affected.
What Shutterfly said happened
In a company statement published December 26, 2021, Shutterfly said it had “recently experienced a ransomware attack on parts of our network.” The statement described a ransomware incident, but did not name an attacker or provide a recovery timeline.
Shutterfly reported interruptions in portions of Lifetouch and BorrowLenses, Groovebook, manufacturing, and some corporate systems. It said it had engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and informed law enforcement.

These descriptions reflect Shutterfly’s initial account of the event, not a final technical analysis. The company’s statement did not give incident-specific figures or describe how long interruptions lasted.

What the company disclosed about customer data
Shutterfly said its investigation was still assessing the full scope of information that might have been affected. It specifically said credit-card information, financial-account information and Social Security number information for customers of the named brands were not impacted. That statement rules out those categories as described by the company; it does not establish that no other information was affected.
The December 2021 statement did not publish final forensic findings or disclose whether a ransom was paid. It also did not identify an attacker. The sources available here do not establish the final scope of potentially affected data, payment, attribution or a complete recovery chronology.

What customers can do to preserve Shutterfly photos
Shutterfly’s current help guidance, dated February 23, 2026, says an order at least once every 18 months keeps an account active under its stated photo-storage policy. Customers who prefer not to maintain an active account can download their photos to a personal device. An external drive is one possible destination for an independent copy; Shutterfly does not recommend a particular device.
If you want to keep using Shutterfly storage
Make a qualifying order at least once every 18 months, as specified in Shutterfly’s photo-storage policy. This is the company’s current policy guidance, not a remedy for the 2021 incident.

If you want a copy you control
Download the photos you want to keep to a personal device. Shutterfly’s privacy notice, dated October 13, 2025, says users may download and/or delete some or all photos in their account. The notice also says photo content and associated metadata may be used to organize photos and suggest personalized products.
If an account has become inactive
Shutterfly says photos on accounts without a qualifying order are archived rather than deleted. While archived, they remain visible and usable for products, but cannot be shared or downloaded. The company says an order returns them to faster storage and makes them available for sharing and download again within 24 hours. See its inactive-account photo guidance.

Does this mean Shutterfly is under attack now?
No current attack follows from the 2021 statement. It documents a ransomware incident Shutterfly disclosed on December 26, 2021; the sources cited here do not establish that the same attack is ongoing in 2026. For present-day service or account concerns, consult Shutterfly’s current customer guidance rather than treating the historical disclosure as a live security alert.
