Switching makes sense when another platform fills an important tool or performance gap that outweighs the cost and hassle of replacing or duplicating batteries and chargers. Compare the tools you actually need—not brand names in the abstract—and treat battery compatibility as a safety and manufacturer-support question, not just a matter of voltage.
What a battery platform includes—and why it affects your decision
A cordless battery platform is the set of batteries, chargers, and tools designed to work together. Once you own compatible packs and a charger, you may be able to add a bare tool—one sold without a battery or charger—rather than buying another complete kit. Consumer Reports’ Battery Platform Buying Guide, updated March 13, 2026, describes this as a possible later purchase path.
That makes the cost of an individual new tool different from the cost of moving your whole collection. A move can mean replacing or duplicating batteries and chargers as well as buying tools. There is no reliable, universal dollar break-even point: the answer depends on what you own, what you need next, and current prices and kit contents.
How to decide whether to stay, add a second platform, or switch
- List the tools you expect to need over the next few years. Focus on actual jobs and gaps, rather than comparing brand catalogs in general.
- Check coverage in your current platform. Look for a suitable tool and model, and consider whether its performance meets your use and work frequency.
- Price the real alternatives. Compare the needed tool as a bare tool in your existing system with the cost of moving to the other platform, including the batteries and charger you would need. A cordless drill and impact driver combo kit with batteries and charger can be a useful starting point for a new platform, but included packs and charger vary by kit.
- Include practical access and service. On a shared jobsite, coworkers’ compatible batteries, chargers, and tools may matter. Also consider access to tools, batteries, and service for the specific products you are considering.
- Choose the smallest move that solves the problem. If your current platform lacks one needed tool but otherwise works well, a second platform for that tool may be more sensible than replacing everything. That approach avoids a full collection change, but means managing another battery and charger system.
These comparisons do not establish a universally best brand or platform. Your choice turns on tool coverage, condition of your existing inventory, ownership cost, performance needs, sharing arrangements, and any manufacturer-supported cross-brand compatibility that applies to the exact products.

Can batteries and tools from different brands work together?
Do not assume they can just because the voltage matches. Consumer Reports notes that batteries are proprietary to brands and can sometimes be specific to a system. Confirm compatibility for the exact model and generation in the manufacturer’s listing and on the product label.
Manufacturer-approved alliances
Some multi-brand alliances explicitly integrate products from participating brands. Bosch says AMPShare batteries and chargers work with Bosch 18V tools and products from brands integrated into AMPShare. Its AMPShare FAQ says integrated batteries, chargers, and tools are compatible regardless of product brand, and that Bosch Professional 18V batteries and chargers work with AMPShare-compatible tools. The scope matters: this is a claim about products integrated into AMPShare, not every product from a participating brand. Bosch also distinguishes AMPShare from Bosch POWER FOR ALL; they are separate systems. Warranty and service depend on the individual alliance member shown on the product label.

The Cordless Alliance System describes itself as a multi-brand 18V system and currently advertises compatibility with over 50 brands and more than 500 tools. Those are the alliance’s own scale claims, not an independently audited comparison. They do not mean unrelated 18V batteries interchange.
For either alliance, check the alliance mark and the precise tool, battery, and charger compatibility listing. Brand membership or voltage alone is not enough to establish fit.

Third-party batteries and adapters
The Power Tool Institute’s September 1, 2021 safety release, “Three Part Harmony: Understanding Your Power Tool System,” recommends using a matched battery, tool, and charger made by the same manufacturer and designed as a system. It warns against third-party batteries and adapters. That is the Institute’s safety guidance; it is not a claim that every adapter in every use case has been independently tested here. An adapter should not be treated as equivalent to manufacturer-supported compatibility.

What to verify before buying
- The exact tool, battery, and charger models are listed as compatible by the manufacturer.
- The product carries the relevant alliance mark if you are relying on cross-brand alliance compatibility.
- The kit contents match your plan; batteries and chargers included with a kit vary.
- Warranty and service responsibility are clear for the specific alliance member and product label.
- Your comparison accounts for existing compatible packs and chargers, rather than assuming every new tool requires a full kit—or that a new platform costs only the bare-tool price.
