There are two different Eternal Fire priest encounters in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and the right choice depends on which quest you are playing. If you mean the young deacon in In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow, explore the mine, bring up the priest who stayed behind, then argue that the deacon is innocent and can do good without the Church. If you mean the priest in Funeral Pyres, the choice is whether to accept his bribe or refuse it after learning what he did.
Which priest encounter do you mean?
Funeral Pyres is a Velen secondary quest about an Eternal Fire priest who hires Geralt to burn battlefield corpses and conceal his fisstech dealings. In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow, added with the next-gen update in Patch 4.0, involves Reinald and a young deacon. The Forgotten Priest’s Testament, found while exploring the mine, can unlock an optional argument with Reinald. These quests have different choices and outcomes.

How to spare the deacon in In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow
- Explore the mine before resolving the argument. Find the evidence about the priest who stayed behind. The Testament is an in-game document that opens optional dialogue.
- Raise the priest’s example with Reinald. The walkthrough reports that this additional argument can affect whether Reinald spares the deacon.
- Defend the deacon’s character. Say that the boy is innocent and does not need the Church to do good. The guide reports this sympathetic route as the way to persuade Reinald to spare him.
Dialogue order matters: the walkthrough warns that agreeing with Reinald without first mentioning the priest can lead to the deacon’s death. It describes conditional branches, not a guaranteed outcome regardless of the full conversation, so do not treat a single response as a universal shortcut. Reinald grants armor and sword diagrams after the fight; the guide does not establish a better material reward for killing the deacon.
What happens in Funeral Pyres?
In Funeral Pyres, question Titus to learn that the priest attacked him after their fisstech dealings. The quest reference says that obtaining this information changes the available dialogue and payment options. Your decision is whether to take the priest’s bribe or refuse after learning what happened.

The reference also lists a suggested level of 3 and quest reward figures of 10 per corpse, then 25, with 50 or 60 in the relevant payment branch. These are walkthrough figures, and rewards can depend on the quest branch or prior steps; they should not be read as guaranteed totals for every playthrough.

- For the Funeral Pyres priest: accept the bribe to avoid a fight, or refuse after questioning Titus if you want to confront the priest.
