Usually, pay in USD. If you’re a Canadian cardholder and a U.S. merchant offers to convert the purchase to CAD, declining that conversion generally avoids the merchant’s exchange rate and markup. Your card issuer or its processing arrangement will handle the USD transaction under your card’s terms. Check your card’s billing currency and foreign-transaction fees before deciding, since those can affect the total cost.
Should I pay in USD or CAD?
For a card billed in Canadian dollars, choosing USD generally means the merchant submits the purchase in USD and your issuer or its processing arrangement converts it for billing. Choosing CAD at checkout uses the merchant’s or acquirer’s conversion instead. Visa Canada says a merchant’s home-currency conversion usually includes a markup and advises cardholders to decline it; Mastercard recommends letting the home bank perform the conversion.
This is a useful default, not a guarantee that USD is cheaper for every card or transaction. Your issuer’s foreign-transaction fee, the card’s billing currency, and the merchant’s offered CAD amount all matter.
What happens when the merchant converts the price?
The offer is commonly called dynamic currency conversion (DCC), or point-of-interaction currency conversion. Rather than submitting the transaction in the merchant’s currency, the merchant or acquirer converts it to your card’s billing or home currency at checkout. Mastercard’s transaction-processing rules say that when point-of-interaction conversion is used, the merchant or acquirer applies the exchange rate.

If you decline DCC and pay in USD, the transaction remains in USD for processing, and the card issuer or its processing arrangement applies conversion according to the card’s terms. The two options therefore use different conversion paths—and potentially different rates and fees.
How to compare the two checkout options
Use the displayed totals and your card terms rather than assuming either conversion rate is favorable. Compare these items before accepting a CAD offer:

| What to compare | Merchant conversion to CAD | Paying in USD |
|---|---|---|
| Who applies the exchange rate? | The merchant or acquirer, under DCC. | Your issuer or its processing arrangement, under the card’s terms. |
| What amount is shown? | The merchant’s CAD total should be shown alongside the USD amount. | The merchant’s USD total is charged; the CAD billing amount depends on the card’s conversion process. |
| What fees or markup should you check? | Any additional fee or markup disclosed with the offer. | Your card’s foreign-transaction fee, if applicable. |
| Where can you verify the terms? | Review the checkout disclosure. | Check your card agreement or ask the issuer what foreign-transaction charges apply. |
The available guidance does not establish rates or fees for individual Canadian cards. Mastercard’s consumer FAQ says currency-conversion fees can be “sometimes as much as 7%,” but the figure is undated on that page; it should not be treated as a current universal rate or as the fee for a particular card.
What should the checkout screen disclose?
Visa says a DCC offer should make the choice clear and show the amounts in both currencies, currency symbols, the exchange rate, and any additional fee or markup. The merchant should not choose for you or use visual cues to steer your selection.

- Look for the exchange rate and any stated fee or markup.
- Choose the currency yourself; do not assume the highlighted or preselected option is better.
- If required details are missing or you feel pressured, decline the conversion. Visa recommends reporting the incident to your card issuer.
When might CAD be worth considering?
CAD may be worth considering if the card is billed in a currency other than USD and CAD, or if you have a specific reason to prefer a known checkout amount. Even then, compare the disclosed CAD total and conversion terms with what your issuer would charge for the USD transaction. A displayed CAD amount provides certainty about the merchant’s charge, but that alone does not show that it is the lower-cost option.
If you cannot verify the DCC rate or markup, the safer usual choice for a Canadian cardholder paying a U.S. merchant is to decline DCC and select USD, then check your issuer’s terms for the resulting conversion and any applicable fee.
