If your iPhone or Mac is essential for work, communication, travel, payments, or other daily tasks, wait for the public release. Apple warns that beta software may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not perform as well as released software. It recommends installing betas only on non-production devices that are not business-critical.
A beta is a better fit if you have a separate test device or Mac partition, can tolerate bugs and interruptions, have a current pre-beta backup, and are willing to report issues. Apple’s program is designed to gather quality and usability feedback, not to guarantee finished behavior.

When an Apple public beta is a poor fit
Do not install a beta on the device you rely on if a software defect, incompatible app, or interruption would cause a serious problem. Apple’s Beta Software Program FAQ advises: “Install the beta software only on non-production devices that are not business critical.” The Apple Beta Software Agreement likewise says pre-release software should not be used in production or business-critical systems.
This applies whether the device is an everyday iPhone or Mac. Apple’s warning is general: it does not give a failure rate or establish how stable any particular beta build will be. Compatibility and behavior can depend on the specific beta, apps, peripherals, and device configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
When installing a beta can make sense
Consider joining the public beta if you want to try pre-release software and can accept that something may not work as expected. Apple describes the program as a way for participants to provide feedback on software quality and usability.
- You have a separate device for testing, or a secondary partition on your Mac.
- You have made a backup before installing the beta and understand what restoring from it involves.
- You can manage without the device if a defect or incompatibility interrupts your usual routine.
- You are prepared to report problems through Feedback Assistant, which is built into iOS and macOS betas.
How to decide for your own device
Use the likely cost of disruption—not the appeal of an early feature—as your main test. If losing access to a critical app, payment method, communication tool, or work setup would be unacceptable, keep your primary device on released software.

| Question | If the answer is yes | If the answer is no |
|---|---|---|
| Would a bug or incompatibility seriously disrupt essential tasks? | Wait for the commercial release. | A beta may be reasonable if the other safeguards are in place. |
| Do you have a separate test device or, for Mac, a secondary partition? | Use that rather than your production setup. | Installing on your everyday device carries more risk. |
| Do you have a current backup made before beta installation? | Keep it available in case you need to restore. | Back up first; do not rely on a beta-era backup as your fallback to the previous released system. |
| Are you willing to live with defects and submit feedback? | You are better prepared for the purpose of the beta program. | Wait for the released version. |
Back up before installing
Apple recommends backing up an iPhone or iPad before installing beta software and backing up a Mac with Time Machine. Make the backup before installation: Apple says a pre-beta backup can be used to restore a previously released iOS or macOS version.
For iPhone
Create a current backup before installing the beta and make sure you know how you would access it if you needed to return to released software. The important fallback is the backup made before the beta—not an assumption that a later backup from a beta system will restore the previous system exactly as desired.

For Mac
Use Time Machine to make a backup before installation. You will need an appropriate backup destination for your setup; Apple’s cited guidance does not require a particular drive model or type.
What leaving the beta means
Unenrolling stops beta updates. You can install the next commercial version when it is released, but that is not the same as an effortless downgrade to the prior released version. Apple identifies the pre-installation backup as the way to restore a previous released iOS or macOS version, so plan around that before installing.

Warranty, AppleCare, privacy, and feedback
Warranty and AppleCare
Apple says installing beta software does not void the hardware warranty. Separately, Apple’s FAQ says that if you need further AppleCare assistance for a beta issue, you must restore to previously released software before seeking that assistance. This is not a guarantee that every beta defect, app, or service will receive a particular kind of support.
Diagnostic data
Apple’s beta privacy notice says it may collect and process diagnostic, technical, and usage logs from devices running beta versions of iOS, tvOS, or macOS. Listed information includes general analytics, device and system or hardware identifiers, hardware and operating-system specifications, performance statistics, and peripheral use. If Location Services is enabled, certain location information may also be included. Apple says this information does not personally identify the participant; that qualification applies to the notice’s described data and should not be read as a broader privacy guarantee.

Feedback is part of the program
Feedback Assistant is built into iOS and macOS betas. Apple encourages participants to report issues there; the program is for testing pre-release software and providing quality and usability feedback.
Check current availability and compatibility
Beta families and eligible devices change over time. Apple’s program homepage is the place to check current availability and device compatibility before enrolling. A listing for a beta family does not mean that every device supports it or that the software is appropriate for an everyday device.
