Yes—leave S.M.A.R.T. enabled when your BIOS/UEFI and drive support it. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) lets the computer read a drive’s health attributes, thresholds, logs and, on compatible hardware, run self-tests. It does not repair a failing disk or guarantee that failure will be detected. If a persistent S.M.A.R.T. warning or failed self-test appears, back up important data immediately and replace the drive.
What S.M.A.R.T. does
ASRock’s BIOS documentation defines S.M.A.R.T. as a monitoring system that detects and reports indicators of hard-drive reliability. A compatible drive records information such as health attributes, warning thresholds and self-test results in firmware. Western Digital also notes that S.M.A.R.T.-capable drives can run maintenance or self-test routines and retain the results in a self-test log.
Enabling the feature gives the host permission to query that information. Depending on the drive and software, you may be able to view current attributes, read thresholds and logs, start an immediate test, or receive a status such as “good,” “warning” or “bad.”
Should you enable it in BIOS?
For normal desktop, laptop and server use, there is little benefit to disabling S.M.A.R.T. Keep it enabled unless a specific vendor troubleshooting procedure requires otherwise. The setting is usually independent of operating-system files and does not make the drive repair itself; it simply allows health monitoring and supported tests.

Labels and locations differ by motherboard model. Some firmware offers an Enabled/Disabled switch; others expose only a self-test control or no setting at all.
What enabling S.M.A.R.T. can and cannot do
| Capability | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Health reporting | Reads drive attributes, thresholds and status when the hardware path exposes them. |
| Short self-test | Usually checks electrical and read/write behavior and may inspect part of the media; it normally completes faster than an extended test. |
| Extended self-test | Runs a longer, more thorough media examination and can take substantial time, especially on large disks. |
| Repair | Not provided. S.M.A.R.T. cannot fix bad sectors, restore deleted files or reverse mechanical or electronic damage. |
| Failure prediction | Useful early warning, but not definitive. Netgate cautions that some drives fail while still passing S.M.A.R.T. tests. |
Tests can add drive activity, so run an extended test when the system can tolerate the extra time and load. A test result is evidence about the drive at that moment, not a warranty that it will continue working.

What “S.M.A.R.T. status bad” means
A “bad,” failed or otherwise serious S.M.A.R.T. result means the drive is at elevated risk. Western Digital describes S.M.A.R.T. as providing early warning signs intended to protect data and advises treating an error as a reason to back up quickly and replace the drive.
Safe response sequence
- Stop nonessential writes to the affected drive.
- Copy important files to a separate, known-good destination. If the disk is unstable, prioritize irreplaceable data and avoid repeated scans that are not needed for recovery.
- Record the exact attribute, diagnostic message, self-test result and drive model.
- Replace the drive when the warning persists or a self-test fails.
- Restore the backup to the replacement and verify that the restored files open correctly.
Do not dismiss a warning merely because the computer still boots. Continued operation can be useful for copying data, but it is not evidence that the drive is safe for ongoing use.

Why S.M.A.R.T. may be missing or unreadable
Availability depends on more than the disk itself. The drive must implement S.M.A.R.T., and the BIOS/UEFI, operating system, storage controller and connection path must pass the information through.
| Setup | Typical visibility | Reason for limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Direct SATA, SAS or NVMe connection | More likely to expose health data and tests | There is usually a direct path to the drive, although compatibility remains hardware-specific. |
| USB or FireWire enclosure | May expose no S.M.A.R.T. data | The bridge may not forward S.M.A.R.T. commands and attributes. |
| Hardware or firmware RAID | Underlying values may be hidden | Intel documents cases where creating a RAID volume prevents normal viewing of individual-drive S.M.A.R.T. values. |
| Virtual disk or controller abstraction | Often reports the virtual device rather than each physical disk | The intermediate layer controls which commands and logs reach the drive. |
Netgate likewise notes that support varies by drive and BIOS and may require enabling the feature in both places. Apple’s IOATASMARTInterface demonstrates that software can enable or disable S.M.A.R.T. operations, read data and thresholds, retrieve logs, start an immediate test and return ATA-device status; an operating-system API cannot recover information that a controller or bridge has hidden.

Can S.M.A.R.T. predict a hard-drive failure?
Sometimes it identifies degrading conditions early, which is valuable for replacing a disk before data becomes inaccessible. It is not a complete predictive system: a drive can pass its available checks and still fail suddenly, while some warnings may be nonfatal or tied to a particular attribute. Use S.M.A.R.T. as one monitoring signal alongside current backups, storage redundancy where appropriate and normal attention to unusual noise, repeated errors or disappearing volumes.
When disabling it might be justified
Disabling S.M.A.R.T. is generally a troubleshooting exception, not a performance or reliability improvement. A hardware vendor or administrator might temporarily change the setting to isolate a firmware, controller or compatibility problem. If you do so, restore the enabled setting after testing; otherwise the system may stop surfacing warnings that could prompt a timely backup and replacement.
