Usually, leave “Plug and Play O/S” at the motherboard’s documented default. This setting determines whether the BIOS or Windows configures certain Plug and Play hardware; it is not a universal Windows XP Professional performance or compatibility switch. On the KT965 and IPPC-6192A manuals reviewed, No is the default. Use the exact manual for your motherboard and BIOS revision before changing it.

What “Plug and Play O/S” controls

The option assigns responsibility for configuring certain hardware resources. It does not enable or disable Plug and Play throughout Windows.

Setting Who configures the relevant devices? Manual-specific qualification
No The BIOS configures all devices covered by the setting. The Kontron KT965 manual says this explicitly. The Advantech IPPC-6192A manual lists No as its default.
Yes A Plug and Play-aware operating system configures eligible devices. The KT965 manual limits this to PnP devices not required for boot. The IPPC-6192A manual describes Windows changing interrupt, I/O and DMA assignments.

Because manufacturers describe the scope differently, the label alone is not enough to predict behavior on every board.

Is “Yes” required for Windows XP Professional?

No universal Windows XP Professional rule establishes that you must select Yes. The ASUS P4P8X manual discusses Windows 2000/XP in this BIOS context, while the KT965 and IPPC-6192A manuals document the same basic BIOS-versus-operating-system delegation. Those manuals support understanding the option, not a blanket XP recommendation.

If XP is operating normally, changing the setting solely because the computer runs XP Pro has no established benefit. Keep the documented default unless your motherboard manual or a specific troubleshooting procedure calls for something else.

Which setting should you use?

Leave it at No when the system is stable

  • It matches the stated default in the KT965 and IPPC-6192A manuals.
  • The BIOS continues assigning resources before Windows starts.
  • There is no demonstrated speed improvement from switching to Yes.

Consider Yes only for a defined compatibility problem

A change may be worth testing when a legacy PCI or other PnP device has a resource conflict and the board documentation specifically supports operating-system assignment. This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a general XP optimization.

How to decide safely

  1. Identify the motherboard model and BIOS revision shown during startup or in the BIOS information screen.
  2. Read that board’s section usually named PCI/PnP, Advanced PCI/PnP Settings or similar. Record the documented default and the exact definitions of Yes and No.
  3. Record your current setting before changing anything.
  4. If troubleshooting a concrete device problem, change only this option, save, and boot Windows XP.
  5. Check Device Manager and the affected hardware. If the conflict remains or another device becomes unreliable, restore the previous value.

What can change after switching it?

Depending on the board, the operating system may receive responsibility for interrupt, I/O-port and DMA assignments, or only for devices that are not needed to boot. A setting that works on one motherboard may therefore have no effect—or a different effect—on another. Do not infer a fault from the option’s name alone; verify the actual device error and the board manual’s scope.

Practical answer for common cases

“My XP Pro installation works.”

Leave the option at the motherboard’s default, commonly No in the manuals cited above.

“A PCI device has a resource conflict.”

First identify the board and BIOS revision, consult its PCI/PnP instructions, and then test one setting at a time. Keep a record so you can reverse the change.

“I want better performance.”

This option is not documented as a performance control. Changing it without a hardware or resource problem is unlikely to provide a meaningful benefit.

Bottom line

“Plug and Play O/S” means BIOS configuration when set to No and operating-system configuration for eligible devices when set to Yes. Windows XP Professional does not, by itself, make Yes mandatory. Follow the exact motherboard manual, and change the setting only to address a specific, observable hardware-resource issue.
