Yes—if the specific refurbished laptop is substantially cheaper than a genuinely comparable new model and its battery, warranty, return terms, and software-support life fit your needs. “Refurbished” alone does not guarantee a good deal: compare the exact configuration and seller’s protections, then account for any likely battery or charger costs. There is no reliable universal discount percentage that makes every refurbished laptop worth buying.
Refurbished or used: what are you actually buying?
“Refurbished” does not describe one industry-wide process. A manufacturer or retailer may inspect, test, repair, clean, and reinstall software on a returned or pre-owned laptop, but the standard depends on the seller. A privately sold used laptop may not have been inspected or repaired at all.
Dell, for example, says its certified refurbished products are tested, repaired when needed, reimaged, and inspected before sale; Dell also distinguishes these from used products, which are not necessarily repaired, inspected, or tested. That is Dell’s process, not a guarantee about every refurbished listing. Ask who performed the refurbishment and what work and checks were actually done. Dell Outlet
Compare the exact laptop with a new alternative
Compare the full model and configuration, not a familiar processor label or a retailer’s cosmetic grade. An older Core i5 can differ greatly from a current Core i5, and “refurbished” stock may include both current- and previous-generation devices. Look up the complete processor name and model number, then compare the laptop’s memory, storage, display, ports, and performance for your actual workload. | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact model and processor | Generation and full CPU model are more useful than a family label such as “Core i5.” |
| Memory and storage | Check capacity against your apps, files, and multitasking needs; do not assume the refurbished configuration matches the new one. |
| Display and ports | Screen quality, size, resolution, and the ports you use can differ even between similarly named laptops. |
| Workload suitability | For demanding work, compare expected performance and upgrade options rather than choosing by price alone. |
Compare the refurbished listing with a new machine that can do the same work. A cheaper laptop with less memory, a weaker display, or an unsuitable port selection is not an equivalent deal.
Check how long the laptop will remain supported
Remaining software and security support is part of the laptop’s value. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025; if you are considering an older Windows PC, check whether its exact hardware is eligible for Windows 11 and whether it meets the requirements of the software you rely on. A low price does not compensate for a support gap that conflicts with your security or application needs. Which?

Price in battery, charger, and condition
A laptop that works well plugged in may still be a poor fit for mobile use if its battery no longer lasts long enough. Ask the seller for the battery’s condition or a clearly stated minimum assurance, and check whether a suitable charger is included and in good condition. Find out whether a replacement battery is available and what it would cost before comparing the final price. There is no universal battery-health percentage that makes every used laptop a safe purchase.

Read the seller’s definition of any cosmetic grade. Grades vary between retailers and describe appearance; a grade by itself does not establish battery health, reliability, or future software support. Also check charging-port condition and whether the charger is the correct one for the model. Which?
Read the warranty and return terms for that seller
Confirm who provides the warranty—the manufacturer, refurbisher, or retailer—what it covers, how long it lasts, and how service works. Look for exclusions, shipping or service costs, and any requirements for proof of purchase. Return rights and policies are not uniform across sellers or countries.

For examples scoped to the United States, Microsoft’s refurbished Surface page describes a 12-month hardware warranty and return-policy conditions, while ASUS’s US terms show that refurbished coverage may have exclusions. These are examples for those products and terms, not standard protections for all refurbished laptops. Microsoft refurbished Surface ASUS US refurbished terms

Decide whether the discount is worth the tradeoffs
Compare the final payable price for the refurbished laptop—including any necessary battery or charger replacement—with the price of a new laptop that offers equivalent capability. Then weigh the difference against remaining supported life, condition, warranty, return terms, and your tolerance for uncertainty. Oliver Trebilcock, a Which? laptops expert and senior researcher, puts the key qualification this way: “Yes – provided you choose your model carefully, you can get more for your money with a refurbished versus a new laptop. However, the age of the model is important.” Which? buying guide
Refurbished is more compelling when the listing identifies the exact configuration, explains its inspection or repair, gives useful battery and charger information, and comes with clear warranty and return terms. If you depend on the laptop every day, need long unplugged runtime, or cannot afford downtime, a new model’s greater certainty may matter more than the lower upfront price.
Checklist before you buy
- Record the exact identity: note the model number and complete processor name.
- Verify fit: check the operating system’s update status and compatibility with the software you need; confirm memory, storage, display, ports, and workload performance.
- Understand condition: read that seller’s cosmetic-grade definition and ask about battery condition, replacement availability and cost, charging port, and charger inclusion.
- Check protection: identify who refurbished it and who handles the warranty; read its coverage, exclusions, service process, return window, and return costs.
- Compare the total: include likely replacement costs and compare against a new laptop with equivalent capability and a suitable support horizon.
Prefer a listing that spells out testing, repairs, condition, and support terms. If those essentials are unclear, the apparent saving is harder to evaluate.
