Buy a new game at launch if you want to play now and value its shared release window; wait if the price strains your budget, you are unsure about the game, or you would benefit from more reviews and updates. There is no dependable rule for how soon a particular game will go on sale, so the best choice depends on what playing now is worth to you.
When buying at launch makes sense
Paying the launch price is easiest to justify when the game is a priority, not just another addition to your backlog. Immediate access can matter if you want to avoid spoilers, join friends while everyone is starting out, or take part in an active multiplayer community during its release period.

Ask yourself whether you are likely to play soon. If you will start right away and the price fits your budget, waiting may save money but also delay the experience you want. If you have no time to play, buying now mainly trades money for ownership you cannot yet use.

Waiting is sensible when the current price feels too high, you have other games to play, or you are not confident the game is right for you. More player feedback, reviews, gameplay footage, and patch notes can help you assess a specific release. A wait also gives you the option to decide later rather than tying up money now.

Do not treat a delay in a game’s release as proof that it will launch in better condition. A 2022 peer-reviewed study of 23,485 Steam games found that 48% of the sampled games had a delayed initial release, with a median delay of 14 days. It found the difference in review rates between delayed and on-time releases was negligible. That result does not establish whether any particular game is stable or improved by later patches; evaluate the title’s own evidence instead. Read the study, “An Empirical Study of Delayed Games on Steam.”
How to decide for a specific game
| Consideration | Launch purchase fits better when… | Waiting fits better when… |
|---|---|---|
| Urgency | You want to play immediately. | You can comfortably play something else for now. |
| Budget | The current price is affordable and worth playing now. | The price feels uncomfortable or competes with more important spending. |
| Confidence | You have enough information and expect to enjoy it. | You want more reviews, footage, or player feedback. |
| Launch condition | You are satisfied with the game as it is available. | You want to see how it performs and develops after release. |
| Community and spoilers | Playing alongside friends or avoiding spoilers matters to you. | You are comfortable joining later or avoiding release-period discussion. |
| Opportunity cost | The experience now is worth more to you than the potential savings. | You have a backlog or other priorities that make waiting easy. |
This is a personal trade-off, not a formula. No evidence here assigns a universal dollar value to joining a launch community or predicts a particular game’s discount curve.

Do not count on a particular sale date
There is no reliable cross-platform timetable for when an unspecified game will reach a particular discount. On Steam, discounting is subject to platform rules and cooldowns, while the timing and size of any reduction depend on the game and publisher. Valve’s developer-facing guidance says, “Ultimately there is no one-size-fits-all solution to discounting.” That is guidance about discount strategy, not a forecast for buyers. Steamworks discount guidance
A 2025 report by Big Games Machine, citing Gamalytic data, said launch discounts had limited effects on wishlist conversion. The report also warned that niche publishers that do not discount at launch might skew the data. This is qualified Steam-focused evidence, not a universal rule about how consumers behave or whether a launch discount is worthwhile for you. Big Games Machine’s report

If the game is in Early Access
Judge an Early Access purchase by the game you can play now, not only by what you hope it will become. Valve’s customer guidance is direct: “So you should only buy an Early Access game if you are excited about playing it in its current state.” If the unfinished or changing state is not appealing, wait for updates or a full release rather than paying on the strength of future plans. A later Steam sale does not automatically refund the price difference. Steam says customers may request a refund of the original purchase and buy again at the sale price, subject to the current refund policy and eligibility. Check the policy before relying on this option; refund rules differ by store and region. Steam also says coupons or loyalty discounts generally do not stack with sale pricing unless the offer clearly states otherwise. Steam Support’s sale FAQ

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

A practical way to make the call
- Set your limit. Decide what you are comfortable paying before watching launch coverage or browsing offers.
- Check your plans. If you will not play soon, wishlist the game and revisit it when you have time.
- Assess the specific release. Look at current reviews, gameplay footage, and patch notes rather than assuming a delay or a launch discount predicts quality.
- Compare the price where you plan to buy. Use that store’s current listing and, where available, the game’s own price history; sale timing and regional prices vary.
- Read the store’s refund policy. Do not assume Steam’s rules apply to consoles, other PC storefronts, or retail purchases.
