Buy a console now if it already plays the games you want and suits how you play; wait if your current setup is adequate and you prefer to compare confirmed next-generation prices, specifications, and release dates before deciding. As of October 2026, Microsoft has announced a developer-hardware milestone for Project Helix, not a consumer launch date. No verified public release date for a next PlayStation is established here.
Start with the games and the date you actually need them
The decision is less about guessing which console generation comes next and more about whether a current system solves a real need now. List the specific games you want, then check each game’s official store listing for its supported platform and availability. Do the same for any feature that matters to you, such as local multiplayer or handheld play. A console is a poor value if it cannot play the games you care about, regardless of its generation.
- Buy now if the games and play style you want are available on a current console, and you expect to use it before any future system has a confirmed release date and details.
- Wait if your existing setup still works, you have no urgent game or feature requirement, and you would rather make a decision after consumer hardware, pricing, and timing are officially announced.
- Compare both paths if a current purchase would be expensive for your household. Include games, subscriptions, storage, and accessories—not just the console price.
These are decision criteria, not predictions about future launches or prices.
What is known about the next generation—and what is not
Xbox: Project Helix has a developer milestone, not a retail date
In a March 11, 2026 announcement, Microsoft described Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console, designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Xbox President Sarah Bond said the company plans to ship alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a plan for developer hardware; it does not establish when consumers can buy a console, its final specifications, or its price. Microsoft also said it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. Treat that as Microsoft’s broad commitment, not a guarantee that every individual older game will work. Check title-specific compatibility before relying on it. Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement

PlayStation: do not infer a launch date from console-cycle assumptions
No verified public consumer launch date for a next PlayStation is established here. A predicted year based on past console timing is not an announced release date. If waiting depends on a particular PlayStation model arriving soon, wait for an official announcement rather than treating a forecast as a buying deadline.
Why this distinction matters
A development milestone, a product announcement, and a retail launch are different events. Until a platform holder confirms consumer availability and relevant specifications and prices, a future system cannot be compared fairly with a console you can buy and use now.

Compare the current platforms against your needs
| Platform | What the official information establishes | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Sony’s US product page says PS5 consoles can play more than 8,500 PS4 games. It says Game Boost can improve frame rates in select PS4 games. Sony also describes PlayStation Plus as providing access to a changing library of PS5 and PS4 games, with availability tied to the membership tier; monthly games remain playable while the user remains a member. Sony’s US PS5 page | Check the individual game’s compatibility and any performance improvements that matter to you. Confirm current PlayStation Plus tiers, prices in your market, and catalog; subscription access is not the same as permanent ownership. |
| Xbox Series X and Series S | Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement says Xbox Play Anywhere lets supported games and progress move across screens. Microsoft also states a commitment to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years, without providing a title-by-title guarantee in that statement. Compare the exact Series X or Series S model’s features and price in your market; a complete model-by-model comparison is not established here. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play, 256 GB of internal storage, and microSD Express expansion. It supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, but warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Verify compatibility for each accessory you plan to reuse. Expansion requires a microSD Express card; conventional microSD cards are not compatible for that purpose. |
Check what carries over before counting your existing library
A large library can make an upgrade more appealing, but compatibility is not the same as a promise that every game, save, accessory, or upgrade transfers unchanged. Confirm the exact title and the type of access you own before including it in your cost calculation.
- For PS4 games on PS5: Sony’s US page says more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 and identifies Game Boost for select titles. Check an individual game if compatibility or improved performance is important to the purchase.
- For Switch games and accessories on Switch 2: Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Switch games work, while some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Compatible games may get free updates or paid upgrades, with changes varying by game. Nintendo’s list also distinguishes accessory support: original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2, and the original Switch dock is not compatible. Check the current list for the exact game and accessory. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information
- For older Xbox games: Microsoft’s commitment covers four generations broadly, but the announcement does not name every supported title. Verify the specific game rather than assuming it will run.
Also check save transfers, paid upgrades, and whether a game in a subscription catalog remains accessible under the plan you intend to keep. Do not count a temporary or membership-dependent library entry as if it were a purchased copy.

Use total ownership cost, not just the console price
Prices, bundles, stock, and subscription terms vary by market and change over time, so compare current listings where you plan to buy. The useful comparison is the cost of the setup you will actually use.
- Console and chosen model, including disc support if you want physical games.
- Games you expect to buy, including any paid upgrade needed for a version you want.
- Online multiplayer or game-library subscription, if required or valuable to you; check current local tiers and renewal terms.
- Storage expansion and compatible cards or drives. For Switch 2, Nintendo specifies microSD Express rather than conventional microSD for expansion.
- Accessories you need, and whether existing controllers, docks, or other peripherals work with the new console.
If you prefer physical games, verify that the exact model you are considering supports the format you want. The available information here does not establish a complete model-by-model disc-drive comparison, so check the product listing rather than assuming all versions are alike.

Make the decision with a short checklist
- Name your must-play games. Confirm the platform and current availability for each one on the relevant official store page.
- Decide how you want to play. If handheld or tabletop play is central, Switch 2 explicitly supports those modes as well as TV play. If you mainly play on a television, compare the current systems’ game libraries and model features that matter to you.
- Audit what you already own. Check game-by-game compatibility, saves, upgrades, subscriptions, and accessory support on the platform holder’s current pages.
- Calculate your real setup cost. Add the console, intended games, any subscription, storage, and required accessories using prices for your market.
- Set a waiting condition. If you choose to wait, decide what information would change your mind—such as an official consumer launch date, confirmed price, or a must-play game announcement. Do not substitute developer hardware plans or informal launch predictions for those facts.
When waiting makes sense
Waiting is reasonable when your current hardware meets your needs and you are comfortable postponing a purchase without a confirmed date for the next system you want. It gives you the option to evaluate actual consumer specifications, price, launch games, and compatibility once those details are announced. Its trade-off is that an announced development step does not tell you how long the wait will be.
When buying now makes sense
Buying now is reasonable when a current console already offers the games or play modes you want, and the benefit of playing them now outweighs the value you place on waiting for unannounced future details. Existing library support may reduce friction, but only count titles and accessories after checking their specific compatibility.
