Sharman Joshi says he welcomes audiences asking more of films—from production value and direction to the story itself—because higher expectations push creative teams to do better. He made the comments in a Hindustan Times interview published on 1 October 2026, conducted by Nishad Neelambaran. His remarks are his perspective, not a measured finding about audience behavior across India.

Why Joshi welcomes more demanding audiences

Joshi called story “the backbone of everything” and described audiences’ higher demands as “wonderful and exciting.” In his view, critical viewers give filmmakers a reason to “pull up our socks” and offer more than audiences expect. He welcomes scrutiny not as a barrier to making films, but as pressure that can motivate better work.

His comments cover several parts of filmmaking: production value, direction and story. The emphasis on story is central to his point: technical polish matters, but a film’s narrative remains its foundation.

How OTT exposure fits into his view

Joshi linked changing expectations to viewers’ exposure to world cinema on OTT platforms. He said that wider access gives audiences more options and choices, and that creative people must find their space and tell their stories. He did not name a particular streaming service or discuss where any specific film is available.

#1 Best Overall

The interview offers Joshi’s explanation, not a study establishing how OTT has changed audience behavior. It gives no statistic measuring whether viewers have become more critical or how much their expectations have shifted.

What he said about the scripts he has received

Joshi described the scripts he has recently been offered as special, while stressing the importance of their stories. That is his assessment of the material coming his way; the interview does not independently evaluate those scripts or establish a broader trend in the Indian film industry.

His Golmaal 5 reunion with Kunal Kemmu

Joshi praised Kunal Kemmu as “a fabulous actor” and said he was impressed by Kemmu’s talent as a writer. Reflecting on their earlier work together on Dhol (2007), he said he had not known Kemmu was interested in writing at the time.

Joshi also said they would reunite in Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 5, adding, “You can expect the world, and I am sure you won’t be disappointed.” He did not share further project details. The interview does not establish plot information, additional casting, production particulars or a release date.

What the interview establishes—and what it doesn’t

  • Joshi’s view: He appreciates audiences’ demand for stronger production value, direction and storytelling, and sees those expectations as a spur to better work.
  • Industry-wide evidence: The interview reports no statistic or study quantifying a change in audience criticism or expectations.
  • OTT: Joshi says exposure to world cinema broadens viewers’ choices; he does not identify a platform or make a recommendation about a subscription.
  • Golmaal 5: He confirms a reunion with Kemmu but keeps project details under wraps.

Hindustan Times identifies Joshi as a star of 3 Idiots (2009) and an actor in Dhol (2007). Read the full interview by Nishad Neelambaran in Hindustan Times.
