SGPGIMS is developing a proposed Perioperative Medicine Clinic to coordinate care for people preparing for surgery, especially older patients and those with several health conditions. SGPGIMS director Dr RK Dhiman described its intended scope as: “The proposed model is based on the principle of “One Clinic, One Team, One Plan”, covering the patient’s entire surgical journey—from preparation before surgery to care during and after the procedure.” That describes an intended continuum from preoperative preparation through the operation and postoperative care; the report does not set out a detailed clinical protocol for delivering it.
Why SGPGIMS says coordination is needed
According to the Hindustan Times report published October 2, 2026, patients with diabetes, hypertension, or cardiac, pulmonary, or renal problems may need consultations and investigations across several departments before they are considered fit for surgery. The report says that this can mean repeat hospital visits, place a burden on people from rural or remote areas, and sometimes contribute to surgical delays.

The announcement was discussed at the 3rd National Conference of the Indian Society of Intensive Care & Perioperative Medicine (ISICPM-2026), held in Ayodhya from October 2 to 4, 2026. SGPGIMS’s department of anaesthesiology and intensive care collaborated with Rajarshi Dashrath Autonomous State Medical College, Ayodhya. Why this matters to patients and caregivers
If implemented as described, “one clinic, one team” would seek to make pre-surgery assessment more coordinated for patients whose health conditions require input from multiple specialties, while keeping the intended care pathway connected through and after surgery. For now, this is an institutional proposal rather than a confirmed patient service; people arranging care should rely on the hospital’s current instructions and not assume a new clinic or referral route is available.
