For a current machine-wide Teams deployment on Windows, use Microsoft’s TeamsBootstrapper—not the legacy Teams Machine-Wide Installer MSI. Run the latest teamsbootstrapper.exe from an elevated Command Prompt with -p to provision Teams for existing and future users on the PC. For offline deployment, supply a local or UNC MSIX package with -o.
What “machine-wide” means for Teams
TeamsBootstrapper provisions the Teams application on a computer for all users, including users added after deployment. It does not mean every user shares one executable installed in a common per-user directory: user sign-in and the user-specific AppData behavior still matter. Microsoft describes TeamsBootstrapper as a “lightweight online installer with a headless command-line interface.”
The older Teams Machine-Wide Installer is an MSI-based, legacy deployment path. Teams installed through that MSI or Microsoft 365 Apps runs for each new user sign-in and places the application in that user’s AppData folder. For machine-wide or multi-user devices, Microsoft recommends Microsoft 365 Apps or TeamsBootstrapper.

Install Teams machine-wide with TeamsBootstrapper
Online installation
- Download the latest TeamsBootstrapper executable from Microsoft’s Teams deployment documentation and check its Product version in File Properties so you can verify and maintain the current executable.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator on the target Windows computer.
- Change to the folder containing
teamsbootstrapper.exe, then run:teamsbootstrapper.exe -p - Check the command output for success or failure. The installer downloads the latest Teams MSIX, installs Teams for all users, replaces a previously installed different Teams version, and modifies registry settings used for Office interoperability.
Offline installation
- Place the Teams MSIX package on the target device or on a reachable UNC share.
- Run an elevated Command Prompt and invoke the bootstrapper with the package path:
teamsbootstrapper.exe -p -o "c:pathtoteams.msix" - Review the installer output for success or failure. Use the intended package path and ensure the deployment context can access it.
Prepare Windows and network policy before rollout
Before broad deployment, check that endpoints meet Microsoft’s supported Windows requirements and have the current Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime. A Teams installation can be blocked or fail to work properly when device controls prevent package installation or its supporting components from updating.

- Confirm policies permit Teams MSIX installation, the Teams Meeting add-in MSI, and the WebView2 updater.
- Review antivirus and AppLocker rules for blocks affecting Teams or its installer.
- Check firewall, proxy, split-tunnel, and Quality of Service rules against Microsoft’s current Teams network requirements. Teams executable paths can change with updates, so path-based firewall rules need ongoing maintenance.
- Do not set Delivery Optimization Download Mode to 100 (Bypass) for Teams automatic updates; Microsoft says that mode is unsupported.
Deploy across many computers
Use endpoint-management or software-distribution tooling to run the bootstrapper on target devices in an elevated context. Microsoft identifies Intune, Configuration Manager, Group Policy, and other software-management platforms as distribution options. Pilot the deployment on representative devices first, including shared or multi-user machines, and verify installer output and user sign-in behavior before expanding the assignment.
For shared devices, Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 Apps deployment guidance estimates an average of approximately 500 MB per Teams installation. That figure is an average rather than a guaranteed per-device size, so account for storage and update distribution in the actual endpoint environment.

Handle GCC High and DoD tenants explicitly
Microsoft currently directs GCC High and DoD tenants to exclude Teams from Microsoft 365 Apps and use the separate MSI-based installer. Government-cloud users deploying the bulk installer may need the CloudType registry value under HKCUSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftOffice16.0Teams. Microsoft’s listed values are 1 for Commercial, 2 for GCC, 3 for GCCH, 4 for DOD, and 7 for Gallatin. Confirm the tenant and deployment path before applying a cloud value; do not treat one value as appropriate for every organization.
Migrate from classic Teams and remove the old installer safely
- Deploy new Teams machine-wide first using the supported deployment method for the environment.
- After confirming new Teams is available, use existing deployment tooling to remove the Teams Machine-Wide Installer. Microsoft documents Intune Win32 app packaging and silent MSI uninstall product codes for this work.
- Plan for classic Teams cleanup: removing the machine-wide installer can trigger classic Teams removal as users sign in.
Do not remove the legacy installer before new Teams has been deployed. Microsoft warns that doing so can leave users without a Teams client. Microsoft’s classic Teams removal guidance describes an initial update of approximately 150 MB, followed by later updates of 120–150 MB; these are the guidance’s stated update sizes, not a promise that every endpoint will download exactly those amounts.
