Improve Servlet and JSP performance by measuring the application on its actual container, finding where requests spend time, and changing only the relevant code or configuration. Start with request handling and blocking dependencies; for JSPs, check the Jasper documentation for your exact Tomcat release. There is no universal thread count or setting that is optimal for every workload.
How do I improve Servlet and JSP performance?
Use an ordered diagnosis rather than applying generic tuning values. A slow response may involve application code, a wait on a database or remote service, JSP compilation or checking, or container configuration. Measure before and after each change, and keep a rollback path.
Establish a representative baseline
Exercise the important request paths with a workload that resembles production. Record response-time distributions, throughput, errors, CPU and memory use, garbage-collection behavior, and active or busy request threads. If available, also measure time waiting for dependencies such as JDBC connections or remote services. These are useful measurements to collect, not vendor-prescribed targets.
- Choose representative request paths and load conditions.
- Record the baseline measurements before changing code or configuration.
- Change one relevant factor at a time, then repeat the same workload.
- Compare the results and retain a way to revert a change that does not help.
Is servlet concurrency affecting performance?
A container can invoke a servlet instance for concurrent requests. Keep per-request data out of shared servlet instance fields unless the code uses a sound concurrency design. The Jakarta Servlet Specification 6.0, section 2.3.3.1, strongly recommends that developers not synchronize service or methods it dispatches to because synchronization can harm performance by serializing requests.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Look for synchronized request paths and shared mutable state. Do not add synchronization as a general safety measure: it can turn concurrent work into a queue behind one servlet instance. Fix unsafe access with an appropriate concurrency design instead.
Should I use async processing for slow database calls?
Consider asynchronous request processing when a request spends meaningful time waiting for an I/O resource or event and keeping the original request thread occupied is costly. The Servlet Specification 6.0, section 2.3.3.3, explains that waiting inside a servlet is a blocking operation that consumes a thread and other limited resources; enough requests blocked on a slow resource can contribute to thread starvation and degraded service.

| Approach | When it may fit | Costs and constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous handling | The request does not spend significant time waiting, or the straightforward request lifecycle is more valuable than releasing the initial thread. | The request thread remains occupied while the servlet waits for the dependency. |
| Asynchronous handling | The request must wait for a resource or event, and retaining the initial request thread during that wait is costly. | Async support must be enabled along the relevant servlet and filter chain. The application must manage completion, dispatch, timeouts, listeners, and request/response concurrency correctly. |
Check the complete async lifecycle
Async support is not enabled by default for the asyncSupported annotation attribute. Ensure the involved servlet and filter mappings support it. Use AsyncContext to complete or dispatch the request, and account for timeouts and listeners. If async work overlaps the initial dispatch, protect request and response access against concurrency. Dispatching back through the container can preserve container-managed request processing and make content-generation technologies such as JSP available in that scope.
Async processing does not make a database or remote service faster. Measure whether it reduces request-thread occupancy under the workload without overloading the downstream dependency or adding unacceptable lifecycle complexity. Addressing a slow dependency or controlling concurrency to it may be more effective than simply raising request-thread limits.

How can I tune Tomcat for JSP performance?
For Tomcat 10.1.60, Apache documents Jasper 2 as its implementation of Jakarta Pages 3.1. The Jasper documentation describes custom tag-handler pooling, background JSP compilation, recompilation when a compile-time included page changes, and JDT as the default JSP Java compiler.
The Jasper servlet parameters include development, checkInterval, and enablePooling. Treat them as version-specific implementation settings: check the Jasper page for the exact Tomcat release you deploy, rather than assuming that a value or behavior from an older version applies. The Tomcat 10.1.60 Jasper page says its defaults are aimed at development and points to separate production configuration guidance.

The documentation does not establish a universal production value for these parameters. Review the matching release’s production guidance, change only settings relevant to the observed behavior, and measure the deployed application. Do not infer that disabling a check or changing a pool setting will improve every JSP workload.

Tomcat’s configuration reference covers connectors, containers, and nested components, but Apache says that the reference does not prescribe which directives to use for a particular task. Follow the release-matched How-To pages for the task at hand and validate any change with measurements. The reviewed documentation does not establish workload-independent optimal thread-pool, connection-pool, or cache values.
Quick Recap
What should I change first?
- If request paths serialize, review synchronization in
serviceand its dispatched methods, along with shared mutable state. - If time is dominated by waiting, identify which dependency is slow and how much request-thread capacity the waits consume.
- If thread occupancy from waits is a problem, assess async processing against downstream capacity and the added lifecycle work.
- If JSP compilation or checking is implicated, inspect the Jasper documentation and production guidance for the exact Tomcat release.
- If considering a container setting, consult the matching Tomcat configuration guidance, change one factor, and repeat the representative workload.
