On September 30, 2026, Garcia and Even Par LLC filed a motion in LIV Golf’s Chapter 11 case asking the court to explicitly terminate his player participation agreement—or let him terminate it himself. The filing is a request, not a ruling, and the available sources do not establish that he is free to sign elsewhere.
What Garcia asked the court to do
The motion, filed in LIV Golf’s bankruptcy case on September 30, 2026, seeks an unambiguous end to Garcia’s player participation agreement. It asks the court either to terminate the agreement or to permit Garcia to terminate it himself. The filing is available as Case 26-20189-MBK, Document 179.
The legal distinction at the center of the request is between rejection and termination. Garcia’s filing argues that rejection of an executory contract under the Bankruptcy Code constitutes a breach, but does not necessarily terminate the contract. Garcia is therefore seeking explicit action rather than relying on the league’s restructuring process to end the agreement by implication.
Why Garcia says he needs a clear answer
Garcia’s attorneys argue that uncertainty about the agreement could complicate his dealings with tournament organizers, sponsors, and other counterparties. In the motion, they write: “So long as the Agreement remains of record, tournament organizers, sponsors, and other counterparties may hesitate before dealing with Garcia, who may be unable to represent that they are free of competing contractual commitments.”

The attorneys also argue that termination would fit LIV’s position that Garcia’s agreement is not part of its “go-forward business plan.” That is their argument in the filing, not a court finding. Golf Channel’s October 1, 2026 report on the motion provides additional context.
What LIV’s restructuring does—and does not—mean
LIV Golf says it is undergoing a court-supervised Chapter 11 restructuring, winding down “LIV 1.0” while pursuing a transaction for the league’s next phase. CEO Scott O’Neil described the process as a way to address prior financial obligations and complete a transaction for that next phase. LIV says it intends to resume global team competition in 2027 under new ownership, subject to court and relevant stakeholder approval.

Those are the league’s stated intentions, not settled outcomes. LIV says it has not announced definitive decisions on a 2027 schedule or individual events. Its broader plans—including fields of 75 players, a cut, and additional entry routes such as Monday qualifiers—also remain subject to the ongoing process. The available sources do not show that the judge has granted Garcia’s motion or otherwise confirmed that his agreement has ended. Until a ruling or other reliable confirmation establishes the result, it is not accurate to say that Garcia has left LIV Golf or is already a free agent. The immediate development is that he and Even Par LLC have asked the bankruptcy court for clarity and an explicit termination pathway.
