Neither checkout type is reliably faster in every store. One direct study found longer average transactions at self-checkout, even though those customers bought fewer items. A later Target report said total transaction times improved nearly 8% after the retailer changed its checkout setup—but that improvement covered both self-checkout and staffed lanes. The available evidence also does not establish that either option has a lower overall error rate.
For your trip, compare the queue, basket, and likelihood of needing help. A short self-checkout line can work well for a small, straightforward basket; a staffed lane may be more convenient for a full or awkward basket, produce, an age check, or a payment problem.
Which checkout is faster?
It depends on the store and on what you count as checkout time. The time spent scanning and paying is only part of the experience: queue length, bagging, machine prompts, and waiting for an employee can all affect how long it takes to leave.
A direct study found longer self-checkout transactions
A 2020 study by Jin Kyung Kwak analyzed checkout data from one retail store in Poland. Average self-checkout transactions took longer than staffed-lane transactions, despite customers buying fewer products at self-checkout. Both the per-item scanning time and the fixed checkout component were significantly longer at self-checkout. The study abstract does not state the sample size or effect sizes, so the finding should not be treated as a prediction for every store. Read the study abstract.

A retailer-wide improvement does not identify a faster lane
Target reported on May 5, 2025, that total transaction times improved nearly 8% after it introduced self-checkout for baskets of 10 items or fewer at most of nearly 2,000 U.S. stores in March 2024. The reported improvement covered self-checkout and traditional staffed lanes together; it does not show that one lane type became faster than the other. Target also said a greater share of guests were using traditional staffed lanes after the change. Shopper preference is not stopwatch evidence
In a survey commissioned by NCR Voyix, 77% of respondents who preferred self-checkout said speed was a reason; 36% cited shorter lines, and 43% said they preferred bagging their own items. The blind online survey covered 1,044 U.S. consumers in November 2024 and had a stated margin of error of plus or minus 3%. Which is more reliable?
There is no comparable failure-rate evidence here that establishes a reliability winner. The available 2026 figures describe self-checkout errors, but do not provide an equivalent staffed-checkout denominator. Reliability can mean different things: a successful scan, a payment that goes through, no employee intervention, or a quick resolution when something goes wrong.
Self-checkout errors and interruptions
A University of Leicester summary of the ECR Retail Loss Self-Checkout Loss Report 2026 says missed scans occurred in 1% to 4.8% of self-checkout transactions, while product look-up errors occurred in 0.18% to 0.2%. The summary describes contributing factors including awkward items, unfamiliar interfaces, and difficult barcodes, alongside intentional theft. Retailers can struggle to distinguish deliberate non-scans from accidental ones. These figures concern self-checkout and do not show how its error rate compares with staffed lanes. The same summary reports that customers corrected more than 80% of flagged cases after on-screen prompts to check or rescan items. It also describes retailer-reported results for particular interventions: one retailer saw 28% fewer walkaways after introducing exit gates, personal display monitors reduced losses by 12%, and missed-scan identification technology reduced losses by 9%. These are not universal outcomes, and they do not establish that self-checkout is more or less reliable than a staffed lane.
Staff help is part of practical reliability
A checkout interruption matters less if help arrives quickly. At self-checkout, an employee may need to resolve a scan or product-selection issue, verify an age-restricted purchase, or address a payment problem. At a staffed lane, an employee is already present, though a separate assistance request or payment issue can still slow the transaction. The sources do not quantify how often either lane needs help or how quickly issues are resolved.

How to choose a lane for your basket
Use the conditions in front of you rather than assuming one checkout format is always quicker.

This is a practical way to apply the available findings, not a measured rule that guarantees the faster lane. Store layout, queue volume, staffing, payment needs, and machine design can change the result.

What customer studies say about the experience
Speed is only one part of checkout satisfaction. A 2021 paper in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services reported two studies: a field survey of 313 retail shoppers in the UK and an online consumer-panel survey of 474 people in Australia. Its abstract found that perceived quality of staff checkout had a stronger positive relationship with overall store quality, satisfaction, and loyalty than perceived self-checkout quality.
