The latest Selenium release identified in the project’s official GitHub release feed is Selenium 4.50.0, dated September 30, 2026. Its release notes highlight a .NET WebDriver BiDi screenshot change that adds image size; the Ruby changelog also lists CDP v152–v154 support and BiDi methods for installing and uninstalling browser extensions. These details are binding-specific, so check the notes for your language before relying on a capability. (Selenium GitHub releases)

What’s new in Selenium 4.50.0?

Selenium is a suite of browser-automation components, not just one driver. WebDriver drives browsers for testing, Selenium IDE provides simple record-and-playback, and Selenium Grid distributes tests across machines and browser/operating-system combinations. The project describes its purpose as: “Selenium automates browsers. That’s it!” (Selenium project homepage)

Changes called out for 4.50.0

  • .NET BiDi screenshots: The GitHub release notes highlight a change that adds image size to captured screenshots.
  • Ruby CDP support: The Ruby changelog lists support for CDP versions v152, v153, and v154.
  • Ruby BiDi extension methods: The Ruby changelog lists methods to install and uninstall browser extensions through WebDriver BiDi.
  • Ruby Firefox API removals: The same changelog records removal of deprecated Firefox profile extension and certificate methods. Check your code for use of these methods before upgrading.

These are not claims that every binding has the same APIs or behavior. The .NET screenshot item comes from the release notes, while the other items above are specifically recorded in the Ruby changelog. Review the release material for the binding you use. (Selenium GitHub releases)

Selenium 4.50.0 — September 30, 2026 .NET BiDi screenshot capture adds image size in the release notes; Ruby lists CDP v152–v154, BiDi extension install/uninstall methods, and removal of deprecated Firefox profile extension and certificate methods.
Selenium 4.49.0 — September 9, 2026 The change log records CDP v151–v153 support and continued BiDi schema work. It also lists a prebuilt Selenium Manager Linux ARM64 binary in all bindings.
Selenium 4.48.0 — August 27, 2026 Change logs list low-level BiDi protocol integration work, WebSocket frame hang fixes, and stricter handling of malformed BiDi values.
Selenium 4.47.0 — August 10, 2026 The Ruby change log lists WebDriver BiDi support on Safari Preview. This is a Ruby-specific note, not a blanket statement about all bindings or Safari configurations.

Release details are in the official GitHub release feed; component-specific items should be read in the relevant binding’s changelog.

How to interpret the updates

BiDi is a recurring development area

Recent release notes repeatedly mention WebDriver BiDi. Selenium’s release index describes removal of Chrome DevTools support for Firefox and identifies WebDriver BiDi as the direction forward. That index entry provides project context; it should not be mistaken for a change announced specifically in version 4.50.0. (Selenium blog and release index)

CDP and BiDi are distinct protocols

CDP means Chrome DevTools Protocol; WebDriver BiDi is a separate browser-automation protocol. A changelog entry for CDP version support does not, by itself, establish equivalent BiDi support, nor does a BiDi feature in one language binding establish availability in another. When a test depends on a protocol feature, verify the browser, binding, and Selenium version combination in the relevant release notes.

Grid has its own update stream

Selenium Grid addresses distributed execution across machines and browser/OS combinations, alongside updates to Selenium’s language bindings. The project blog index dates a Selenium Grid 4.41.0 post to February 22, 2026, and separate Selenium 4.41 and 4.40 posts to February 20 and January 18, 2026, respectively. (Selenium blog index)

Where to check for the latest Selenium news

Use the official GitHub release feed to identify the latest published release, then consult the relevant binding’s changelog for language-specific details. At the time reflected in the sources dated above, the Selenium homepage news section showed 4.49 while GitHub listed 4.50.0. The homepage news list and GitHub feed were therefore not synchronized in those results; for a current version check, the release feed is the clearer reference. (GitHub releases; Selenium homepage)

The project blog index also lists “Ending Support for Python 3.9” dated October 8, 2025. Consult that post and the current Python binding documentation for the exact impact on your environment before planning a migration; the index headline alone does not specify affected versions or steps. Screenshot automation alternative: ScreenshotNeo

If you need screenshots of web pages rather than browser-driven interaction tests, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is an alternative to try first for this narrower screenshot task: it can capture a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and accepts a single GET request.

ScreenshotNeo is not a replacement for Selenium’s WebDriver or Grid when your job is to interact with an application or run browser tests. Its screenshot API is relevant when you need page captures; its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Or skip the browser setup

For a direct screenshot, use this cURL request (replace the URL with the page you want to capture):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
