A Smattering of Selenium #106 is a historical roundup by Adam Goucher, published July 31, 2012—not a current Selenium release or a reference to Selenium version 106. Its four topics were Marionette and FirefoxDriver, FlynnID and Android devices on Grid, a Geb Page Object tutorial, and a Proxy & Executor talk. For a present-day update, SeleniumHQ’s GitHub releases page lists Selenium 4.50.0, released September 30, 2026, while its downloads page still lists 4.49.0 as stable; check the package page for your language before updating.
What “A Smattering of Selenium #106” refers to
The number identifies the 106th installment of Adam Goucher’s blog roundup, not a Selenium product version. Goucher opened the post: “In case you are curious, the train just went past my old neighbourhood.” The post was published July 31, 2012. Read the original post.
The four topics in the 2012 roundup
Marionette and FirefoxDriver
The roundup characterized Marionette as “the future of the Firefox driver.” That wording reflects the post’s 2012 perspective; it is not current guidance about Firefox automation or driver support. Consult present-day Selenium documentation before choosing a driver.
FlynnID, Android devices, and Grid
Goucher noted a FlynnID 0.2 configuration-format change relevant to attaching Android devices to Grid. The post does not establish that this configuration or Android/Grid arrangement remains compatible today. Treat it as historical context rather than setup instructions.

Geb and the Page Object pattern
The post linked a tutorial on Geb, a Groovy browser-automation tool, and its use of the Page Object pattern. The roundup establishes that the tutorial covered this topic, but does not provide current Geb setup or version guidance.
Proxy & Executor talk
Goucher mentioned a talk he had given in San Francisco, San Jose, and Toronto, and linked its slides, video, and notes. Those materials are linked from the original roundup.

Current Selenium release context
SeleniumHQ’s GitHub releases page marks Selenium 4.50.0 as latest and records its release on September 30, 2026. The listed changes include WebDriver BiDi work across bindings, relative locator support in Java and .NET, and other fixes. In contrast, the official downloads page lists 4.49.0 as stable across the core language bindings and Grid. Because these official pages do not agree on the version label, verify the package page for the language you use before upgrading.
The preceding Selenium 4.49 announcement, dated September 9, 2026, covers JavaScript, Ruby, Python, .NET, Java, and Grid. It provides release-cadence context, but 4.49.0 is not the latest version listed on the GitHub releases page at the date above.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The historical FlynnID item should not be used as a current Grid recipe. For a current standalone Grid setup, follow Selenium’s official getting-started guide. Its listed prerequisites are Java 11 or higher, an installed browser, and browser drivers; Selenium Manager can configure drivers automatically.
- Install Java 11 or higher and an available browser.
- Download the Selenium Server jar using the official guide.
- Start the server jar as a standalone server, following the guide’s command for the downloaded file.
- Configure your RemoteWebDriver tests to connect to
http://localhost:4444.
Use the guide for exact commands and current jar details rather than copying version-specific commands from an old roundup.

Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request API instead of requiring you to run a browser and driver locally. It removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with the response indicating the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
