Selenium is an open-source project for automating web browsers—not one program you install and use in a single way. Most people writing browser tests start with Selenium WebDriver and a language they know; Selenium IDE suits simple record-and-playback tasks, while Selenium Grid distributes tests across machines. As of October 4, 2026, Selenium’s homepage lists Selenium 4.49, released September 9, 2026. The project’s free documentation is the best place to choose a component and follow current setup instructions.
What is Selenium?
Selenium is an umbrella project for tools and libraries that automate web browsers. Its homepage sums up the purpose as: “Selenium automates browsers. That’s it!” The project is open source, and its official documentation and software are available without a paid product requirement.
The name can refer to different parts of the project. WebDriver is the code-based interface for controlling browsers; Selenium IDE records and plays back browser actions; Selenium Grid helps distribute execution across machines and environments. Choosing the right component depends on whether you want to write tests, record a simple workflow, or run tests at scale.
Which Selenium component should you start with?
| Component | Best fit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium WebDriver | Developers writing browser automation in code | Provides language bindings and browser-controlling implementations. It can control a browser locally or remotely through Selenium Server, and is documented by the project as a W3C Recommendation. |
| Selenium IDE | Simple workflows where recording and replaying actions is enough | A browser extension for recording and playing back user actions. |
| Selenium Grid | Teams that need to distribute test execution | Runs tests across several machines and centrally manages multiple browser and operating-system environments. |
For most beginners who want to build maintainable tests, begin with WebDriver. If you only need to capture a short sequence of browser actions and replay it, try IDE first. Grid is a scaling component, not a prerequisite for learning WebDriver.

What is new in Selenium?
The Selenium homepage’s news index lists Selenium 4.49 as released on September 9, 2026. Release information is time-sensitive; consult the official Selenium homepage and news index for current release details rather than assuming every language binding has identical package status.
Coding-agent documentation
A September 29, 2026 post by David Burns, “Your Agent Learned Selenium From My Old Blog Posts,” describes a documentation page added to address recurring incorrect code produced by coding agents. This is a useful reminder to check generated Selenium examples against current official documentation.

ExpectedCondition compatibility notice
A September 21, 2026 notice by Diego Molina says that starting with Selenium 4.51, ExpectedCondition will stop implementing Guava’s Function interface. Users relying on that compatibility should read the linked migration guidance from the notice before upgrading. This is a forward-looking change notice, not a claim that 4.51 has already been released.
How do I get started with Selenium WebDriver?
You need a Selenium language binding, a browser, and the browser’s WebDriver implementation. The binding provides the language-specific API; the driver communicates between Selenium and the browser. Selenium’s official overview includes examples for Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, Ruby, and Kotlin. The project repository lists API documentation for C#, JavaScript, Java, Python, and Ruby, so check the current documentation for the binding and version you intend to use.

In the normal supported flow, you generally do not have to download a driver separately. Selenium Manager is integrated into Selenium bindings by default and manages drivers and browsers. It is a command-line tool implemented in Rust; consult the official docs for the supported setup and any environment-specific requirements.
- Decide whether you need coded automation, simple recording, or distributed execution. For coded browser tests, choose WebDriver.
- Choose a supported language binding and follow the current Selenium getting-started guide for its prerequisites and installation steps.
- Use the official Selenium documentation and first-script guide to launch a browser, navigate to a page, and close the session. Avoid copying setup commands from old examples without checking their version context.
- Once local tests work, consider Grid if you need to distribute execution across machines or manage multiple browser and operating-system combinations.
Is Selenium for you?
Selenium is a good fit when you need code-driven browser automation and want to target supported browsers through language bindings. IDE may be enough for a small record-and-playback workflow. Grid is relevant when local execution is no longer sufficient and you need centralized, distributed runs. The project’s getting-started material explicitly frames this as a fit question; the practical decision is your coding requirement, scale, and target browser and operating-system coverage.

What are WebDriver BiDi and browser events?
WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket connection that lets scripts receive browser events such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. Selenium describes BiDi as a cross-browser replacement for the Chrome DevTools Protocol. It is a developing protocol area: support varies, so verify the commands and browser combinations you need in the current WebDriver documentation rather than assuming uniform availability.
When a screenshot is the actual goal
If you need a rendered website screenshot rather than interactive browser testing, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes known consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Its API is separate from Selenium and does not replace a WebDriver test suite. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request can return a screenshot; the example saves the response body as a WebP file. For parameters and response details, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Start with the official Selenium documentation for component overviews and language examples, then use the getting-started guide for setup. The project’s official GitHub repository links to project resources and API documentation. A book can provide a structured learning path, but it is supplementary: the sample for Selenium WebDriver: From Fundamentals To Framework establishes that a relevant book exists, not that a current edition or listing is available. Verify edition, language, and availability before choosing one.
