Selenium 4.0.0 was announced on October 13, 2021; it is not the latest release. The Selenium 4 series continues, and current package versions differ by programming language. For an upgrade, check your binding’s current package listing, then review custom capabilities, Actions usage, deprecated APIs, and any code that depends on Selenium internals.
What changed in Selenium 4?
The Selenium project announced Selenium 4.0.0 for Java, .NET, Python, Ruby, and JavaScript on October 13, 2021. The release moved Selenium to the W3C WebDriver standard, added functionality through familiar APIs, and rebuilt Selenium Grid. These describe the 4.0 launch; details can change in later 4.x releases, so consult current documentation for present behavior. Selenium 4 announcement
- W3C WebDriver: Selenium 4 uses the W3C protocol and removes support for the legacy protocol. Selenium 3 already supported W3C WebDriver, so code that was W3C-compliant on the latest Selenium 3 should work as expected after upgrading.
- Updated APIs: The release added features through APIs familiar to Selenium users. The upgrade guide calls out capabilities and the Actions class as areas to review.
- Grid redesign: Grid supports standalone (single-process), hub-and-node, and fully distributed setups. The 4.0 announcement also described local Docker container management, a revamped UI backed by GraphQL, live VNC previews, and OpenTelemetry support.
Selenium contributor Simon Stewart wrote in the announcement, “If you’re already a Selenium user, this update should be as easy as just changing your dependency from 3.x to 4.0.0.” He also cautioned that code relying on internal or deprecated APIs may encounter problems. That makes the sentence a useful description of the intended upgrade path, not a promise that every project can switch dependencies without changes.
How do I upgrade to Selenium 4?
Use the official migration guide alongside the package instructions for your language. The steps below synthesize that guidance; they are a practical checklist, not a claim that any particular test suite has been run. Official Selenium 4 upgrade guide

- Identify your binding and dependency manager. Record whether the project uses Java, .NET, Python, Ruby, or JavaScript, and how it pins Selenium. Check the official Downloads page and the language package listing for the version currently available to your project. Do not copy an old version number or install command from a migration example without checking it.
- Inspect capabilities. Review custom capabilities and how they are structured. A non-W3C-compliant capability structure can prevent a WebDriver session from starting. Update it to the W3C format expected by your binding and browser driver.
- Review Actions usage. Check code using the Actions class against the Selenium 4 API and current language-specific documentation. Resolve deprecated calls rather than relying on their continued availability.
- Update the dependency. Change the Selenium package using the official installation instructions for your language and dependency manager, then update related browser-driver or Grid components as your environment requires.
- Run the suite and address failures. Read deprecation messages, fix startup or session errors, and investigate any code that depends on Selenium internals. Repeat the tests in the environments where you run them before rolling the upgrade out broadly.
Which Selenium Grid setup should I use?
The Selenium 4 launch announcement describes three deployment shapes. Choose based on where tests run and how much infrastructure you need to operate; it does not designate one setup as best for every team.
| Setup | Shape | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone | A single process | When a simple, concentrated setup is sufficient and you do not need to distribute Grid components. |
| Hub-and-node | A traditional hub connected to nodes | When you want a central hub with separate nodes while retaining the familiar Grid arrangement. |
| Fully distributed | Grid components distributed across infrastructure | When deployment needs call for distributed operation; the Selenium 4 announcement specifically describes this mode as intended for modern infrastructure such as Kubernetes. |
The announcement also described local Docker container management, a GraphQL-backed UI, live VNC previews, and OpenTelemetry support as part of the 4.0 Grid changes. Verify the current Grid documentation before relying on any launch-era detail for a present deployment.

Current Selenium versions: check your language binding
Selenium 4.0.0 is the 2021 release, not a current-version label. The official Downloads page accessed October 3, 2026 listed .NET Selenium.WebDriver 4.49.0, released September 9, 2026. That is a .NET listing, not a version claim for every binding. Check the official listing for your own language before changing a dependency: Selenium Downloads. The project’s release announcements provide additional release context.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a webpage rather than automate a browser test, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot; create an API key and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Selenium 104 a release?
The release evidence covered here identifies Selenium 4.0.0 and the continuing Selenium 4 series, not a Selenium 104 release.
Does Selenium 4 require a particular browser?
The cited release and migration sources do not specify one required browser; check the documentation for your browser and language binding.
