Use your Galaxy phone’s internal storage by default. Choose a microSD card when your exact model supports one and you want extra photo space or a removable way to transfer files. On compatible phones, you can set the Camera app to save supported captures to the card—but microSD support, maximum capacity, and some camera-mode behavior vary by model and market.
SD card vs. internal storage: the practical differences
| Factor | Internal storage | microSD card |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Built into the phone. | Requires a Galaxy model with a microSD slot and a compatible, inserted card. Samsung says not all devices support microSD (Samsung support). |
| Available capacity | Determined by the phone’s built-in storage. | Limited by the maximum card capacity supported by the specific phone and regional variant; check its specifications before purchasing. |
| Camera destination | Available as the built-in destination. | Can be selected for supported camera output on compatible devices when a card is inserted. |
| File transfer | Files remain on the phone unless copied or transferred another way. | Can be removed to exchange pictures and other data with compatible devices. |
Samsung does not support Adoptable storage on its Android devices, so a card does not merge with internal storage into one unified pool. Nor can you set everything you do on the phone to save to the card.
Check whether your exact Galaxy supports a card
Do not rely on the Galaxy series name alone. Support and maximum capacity differ by model and regional market: Samsung’s Canada compatibility table covers models officially sold in Canada, and its other regional guidance may list different models or limits. Look up the exact model number and market in Samsung’s specifications or support information before buying. Samsung’s card-format definitions—microSD up to 2 GB, microSDHC over 2 GB through 32 GB, and microSDXC over 32 GB through 2 TB—describe card types, not what any particular phone accepts (Samsung US support).
Choosing a card for photos
If the phone has a slot, a compatible microSDXC card may suit a need for added capacity or removable file transfer. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of capacity and read/write capability; it says regular microSD or microSDHC may suffice for less demanding still photography. These general recommendations do not establish that every card works with every phone, so check the handset’s documented capacity limit and card compatibility.

Set the Camera app to save photos to an SD card
- Insert a compatible microSD card and confirm the phone recognizes it.
- Open Camera, then open Camera settings.
- Tap Storage location and select SD card.
This is Samsung’s documented UK workflow; menu names and availability can vary by model, carrier, and software version (Samsung UK support). If Storage location or SD card is missing, first verify that your exact phone supports microSD and that the card is inserted and recognized. Samsung also provides device-setting instructions for formatting a card; formatting erases its contents, so copy any files you need before doing it.
Some camera modes may still use internal storage
Setting the camera destination to SD does not necessarily send every capture mode to the card. Samsung’s Japan FAQ says that on the applicable devices it lists, 8K video, UHD 60 fps, GIF shooting, burst shots, and RAW files are saved to internal storage even when SD is selected. It says those files can be moved to the card afterward. The listed exceptions are model- and market-specific, so check guidance for your own phone and software rather than assuming the same behavior applies to every Galaxy (Samsung Japan support).

Move photos already on the phone
Changing Storage location controls where supported future captures go; it does not move existing photos. Samsung’s Japan guidance describes moving already-captured photos to an SD card on the devices it covers. Use the phone’s file-management tools to move or copy existing files, and check your model’s instructions for the applicable steps. Keep a separate copy of important pictures before moving them.
