Choose ScreenshotOne when you want to request rendered screenshots through a hosted API. Choose Puppeteer when screenshots are one part of a JavaScript browser-automation flow and you need to control the browser steps yourself. They solve related but different problems: ScreenshotOne is a managed rendering service; Puppeteer is a library for controlling a browser.
ScreenshotOne vs Puppeteer: the core difference
With ScreenshotOne, your application sends a URL or HTML to a hosted service and requests a rendered output. The service operates the rendering workflow. Its documentation describes GET and POST requests, access-key authentication, and recommends HTTPS: ScreenshotOne getting started.
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library that controls a browser. You can navigate pages, interact with elements, and capture screenshots as part of a larger automation sequence. The project documents use cases including automated testing, trace capture, extension testing, screenshots and PDFs, and crawling single-page applications: Puppeteer documentation.
| Question | ScreenshotOne | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| What are you adopting? | A hosted rendering API | A browser automation library |
| Who operates the rendering environment? | The hosted service | Your project operates its browser automation environment |
| Best fit | Requesting screenshots through an API when managed rendering suits your deployment and data requirements | Captures that need custom browser interaction, test steps, or other JavaScript automation |
| Cost basis | Vendor-published plans and quotas | Your environment, engineering, and maintenance costs; a general dollar estimate is not established |
When to choose each one
Choose ScreenshotOne for a managed capture endpoint
Use ScreenshotOne when your application mainly needs to submit a capture request and receive a rendered result, rather than orchestrate browser interactions itself. Review its current API options and service constraints against your workload before choosing it.

Choose Puppeteer for browser control
Use Puppeteer when the screenshot must follow interactions or checks that belong in your code—for example, navigation through a flow, test assertions, or capturing a selected page element. Puppeteer’s screenshot API documents page and element screenshots, full-page capture, clipping, transparent backgrounds, output paths, image types, and quality controls: Puppeteer screenshot API.
Test before deciding on speed or fidelity
Neither product’s official documentation provides a controlled head-to-head benchmark for latency, throughput, reliability, or image fidelity. If one of those determines your choice, run the same pages and capture settings through a small workload-specific proof of concept; do not assume either is universally faster or more accurate.

What Puppeteer screenshot capture can control
Puppeteer exposes capture settings through its screenshot APIs. The documented controls include:
- Capture a page or an element.
- Capture the full page or limit the image to a clip.
- Choose an output path and image type, and set quality where applicable.
- Use a transparent background.
These controls are useful when the capture needs to be integrated with surrounding browser actions. The documentation for the method and options is the best reference for the Puppeteer version you install: Page.screenshot API.

Puppeteer deployment costs are workload-specific
Puppeteer does not have a general dollar cost for operating a screenshot workload. Budget for the browser environment and the engineering and maintenance your deployment requires; the amount depends on where and how you run it. Treating the library as “free to operate” would omit those costs.
Check Puppeteer’s supported browser pairing
Puppeteer releases are paired with browser releases to maintain compatibility with Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi implementations. Check Puppeteer’s current supported-browser table when pinning versions or deploying: supported browsers. Browser mappings can change, so a version that works locally should not be assumed to match a deployment without verification.

Privacy and private pages
For a hosted renderer, decide whether your organization permits sending the page or its data to an external service. Before capturing authenticated or otherwise sensitive pages, review the provider’s current data-processing agreement, privacy policy, and retention terms. The public information cited here does not establish a complete privacy or retention comparison between ScreenshotOne and a self-operated Puppeteer environment, so do not assume equivalent handling.

If you want a hosted screenshot API but are comparing options beyond ScreenshotOne, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Its request options include full-page and element captures, output formats, viewport and device settings, and PDF capture.
One-call example
For example, request a WebP screenshot with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server offers the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Common decision mistakes
- Comparing unlike product shapes: a hosted API handles the rendering service; Puppeteer gives your code browser control. Decide which responsibility you want to own.
- Assuming a performance winner: the official sources do not establish a controlled comparison. Benchmark your own pages and capture settings if performance is decisive.
- Ignoring version pairing: verify Puppeteer’s supported browser mapping in the deployment environment.
- Comparing only the API price: include the browser environment and maintenance in a Puppeteer cost estimate.
- Sending sensitive pages without review: establish your data-handling requirements and review current provider terms before using a hosted renderer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Puppeteer take a screenshot of just one element?
Yes. Puppeteer’s screenshot documentation covers element screenshots as well as page captures.
Does ScreenshotOne have a free plan?
Its pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists a free quota of 100 screenshots per month.
Which option is faster?
There is no controlled head-to-head result in the cited official sources. Measure the pages, settings, and deployment conditions that matter to your workload.
