Choose PDF when you need a paginated document, control over paper size or orientation, or a file intended for printing. Choose PNG when you need a pixel-based image of a web page, such as a particular viewport, device rendering, or full-page capture. This is a choice based on how you will use the output, not a claim that one format is universally better. The documented workflows do not establish that PDF or PNG is inherently smaller, more accessible, more compatible, higher-quality, or more faithful.
When to use ScreenshotMachine PDF
Use ScreenshotMachine’s web-to-PDF workflow when the result should be a document with pages. Its documented paper sizes include Letter, Legal, Ledger, Tabloid, and A0 through A6; you can also set portrait or landscape orientation.
Choose screen or print media deliberately
- Screen: Select this when you want the PDF to look like the page does in a browser. The PDF API documents
screenas its default media setting. - Print: Select this when you intend to print the PDF. ScreenshotMachine describes this setting as excluding web-specific graphics and elements not needed for printing.
In the provider’s words: “If you want to save webpage as it looks in the browser use ‘screen’ parameter. But if you plan to print created PDF, use the ‘print’ parameter.” Check the rendered result before relying on it: a page designed for screens may not have the same appearance or content when prepared for print.

Other PDF preparation options
The documented PDF workflow also provides controls for background inclusion, conversion delay, and page interactions such as clicking or hiding selected elements. Use these when the target page needs time to render or an on-page element should be changed before conversion. The appropriate delay and selectors depend on the page; the documentation does not establish one setting that works for every site.
When to use ScreenshotMachine PNG
Use PNG when the output itself should be an image rather than a paginated document. The screenshot API documents PNG, JPG, and GIF formats and supports dimensions for a viewport or full for a full-length page. Its guide describes desktop, phone, and tablet rendering.

Choose the capture area and rendering
- Viewport: Capture the visible area at the dimensions you specify when that is the image you need.
- Full page: Use the documented
fulldimension option when you need a full-length capture instead of only the viewport. - Device rendering: Choose desktop, phone, or tablet rendering to match the intended presentation.
- Region or crop: The screenshot API also documents selecting or cropping page regions.
ScreenshotMachine’s screenshot workflow additionally documents zoom, caching, and controls to click or hide selected page elements. These are capture settings; they do not turn the PNG into a paginated document.
Prepare the page before either capture
Both documented API workflows offer ways to wait for rendering and to interact with or hide page elements. A delay or selector is page-specific: a page with late-loading content may need different preparation from a static page. For PNG, choose the viewport or full-page capture as well as the device rendering; for PDF, set page size, orientation, and the intended media.
