Viewport and full-page screenshots answer different capture requests. A viewport screenshot contains the configured screen area—such as 375×667 or 1440×900. A full-page screenshot asks Screenshotlayer to render the page’s complete vertical height, using fullpage=1. You can combine the controls: the viewport establishes the screen framing and width, while fullpage=1 extends the result below the fold.
Use a viewport capture for above-the-fold checks, device-style comparisons and consistent screen dimensions. Use full-page capture when the output must include content that requires scrolling, such as a page archive or a design review. Screenshotlayer’s documented examples describe the coverage and dimensions; they do not establish whether the service stitches scrolling captures or uses another rendering method.

Neither mode is inherently “higher quality.” The documented distinction is coverage and dimensions, not a measured difference in image quality. A full-page file can simply be much taller than a viewport image.
What the viewport parameter controls
Screenshotlayer says you can generate screenshots for existing mobile devices, tablets and desktops, or specify a custom viewport. The viewport is the virtual screen area in which the page is rendered. It is therefore the setting to change when you need a different device width, screen height or desktop framing.

Standard device dimensions
Choose a documented mobile, tablet or desktop size when you want a familiar device profile. A standard size makes repeated captures easier to compare because the rendering area stays consistent from request to request.
Custom dimensions
For a bespoke layout or regression test, provide a custom value such as:
viewport=1440x900The first number is the viewport width and the second is its height. This is the visible screen area for a normal viewport screenshot. It does not, by itself, request the rest of a long page.

Screenshotlayer’s example pairs viewport=375x667 with mobile user-agent and language settings. That combination asks for a mobile-sized rendering and supplies request metadata that can affect how a site serves its mobile experience:
viewport=375x667&user_agent=MOBILE_USER_AGENT&accept_language=en-USUse the exact user-agent and language values appropriate for your test. The example demonstrates the relationship between the viewport and those separate request controls; the user-agent is not a substitute for the viewport.

What fullpage=1 changes
The fullpage=1 option requests a full-height screenshot. Screenshotlayer’s homepage demonstrates it with viewport=2560x1440 and describes the resulting image as a crisp full-height capture:
fullpage=1&viewport=2560x1440In practical terms, the page is not limited to the initial 1,440-pixel screen height. Content farther down the document is included in the returned image. The viewport still matters because it supplies the rendering width and screen context used while the page is laid out.
The available documentation does not state a universal maximum height or guarantee unlimited output for unusually long pages. Treat very long captures as a case to validate against your account, response and file-handling limits rather than assuming every page can be returned at any length.
Do not confuse viewport size with output width
Screenshotlayer exposes a separate width option. Its thumbnail example uses a 1440x900 viewport and width=300, producing a compact thumbnail. In that example, the page is rendered in a 1,440×900 screen area, while the delivered image is reduced to 300 pixels wide.

Changing width does not turn a viewport capture into a full-page capture. Likewise, setting a large viewport height does not mean the service will include content below that viewport; use fullpage=1 for that request.

Which mode should you choose?
Choose a viewport screenshot when framing matters
- Above-the-fold review: Check the first screen a visitor sees at a fixed desktop or mobile size.
- Device mockups: Keep the image dimensions aligned with a phone, tablet or desktop frame.
- Visual regression: Compare the same URL at the same viewport on each run.
- Compact assets: Render at a known viewport and optionally reduce the returned width with
width.
Choose full page when coverage matters
- Page records: Preserve content that extends below the fold in one image.
- Long design reviews: Let reviewers inspect the complete landing page, article or documentation page without repeated captures.
- Content checks: Verify that lower sections, footers and calls to action are present.
Combine both for long pages with a fixed layout
Most desktop full-page requests should specify both controls: a deliberate viewport width and fullpage=1. This keeps responsive layout decisions stable while asking for the full document height. For a mobile page record, use the mobile viewport example and add fullpage=1.
How to configure a Screenshotlayer request
The following procedure uses the controls shown on Screenshotlayer’s product page. Add the parameters to your authenticated API request in the format required by your account.
- Set the viewport. Start with a standard device size or choose a custom value such as
viewport=1440x900. - Decide on coverage. Leave out
fullpagefor the visible screen only; setfullpage=1when the full vertical page is required. - Choose output handling. Use
widthonly when you need a smaller delivered image, for example a 300-pixel thumbnail. - Select a file format. Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says the
formatparameter can request PNG (the default), JPEG or GIF. - Account for page timing. If the page needs time to render, use the documented delay control. Custom CSS can hide or adjust elements before capture.
- Control freshness. Use the cache-time setting for predictable reuse, or forced refresh when you need a new render rather than a cached result.
- Validate the returned dimensions. Check that the image is screen-sized for a viewport request, or substantially taller when
fullpage=1is enabled.

Output formats and rendering controls
The capture mode determines how much page is included; other parameters affect rendering, freshness and delivery. Keep those concerns separate when designing an integration.

These settings are independent of fullpage=1. A delay does not expand the capture area, and a different format does not alter page coverage.

Troubleshooting viewport and full-page captures
The image stops at the first screen
Check that the request actually includes fullpage=1. A large viewport height is still only a viewport capture unless the full-page option is enabled.
The page is full height but the layout is wrong
Confirm the viewport width first. Responsive breakpoints are driven by the virtual screen dimensions, not by the eventual image file width. If you used width=300, remember that it creates a compact output from the rendered page; it does not provide a 300-pixel mobile layout.
Mobile content does not appear
Use a mobile viewport such as 375x667 and pair it with the mobile user-agent and language settings shown in Screenshotlayer’s example. A desktop viewport with a reduced output width is not equivalent to mobile rendering.
Dynamic content is missing
Increase the documented delay for pages that populate after navigation, and consider custom CSS if an overlay or temporary element interferes with the intended result. Capture again with forced refresh if a cached response predates the content change.

A full-height image can be substantially taller than a viewport image. Use a suitable format and, where an exact smaller delivery size is acceptable, the separate width option. Screenshotlayer does not publish a universal height limit in the supplied documentation, so test especially long pages in your own workflow.

Screenshotlayer’s pricing page retrieved in 2026 lists these vendor-stated plans:

There is an important inconsistency in Screenshotlayer’s own materials about over-limit behavior. The pricing FAQ describes notifications at 75%, 90% and 100% of the monthly allowance followed by overage charges. The terms page says that once the monthly limit is exceeded, calls may return an error and no further calls can be made during the current monthly term. The pricing FAQ describes one “dedicated worker” as a server entity assigned to capture one screenshot, and says that 10 workers allow 10 concurrent snapshots. That is the vendor’s description rather than independent capacity testing. If throughput matters, confirm the worker allocation on the plan you are considering and measure it with your own URLs.
