Choose the Windows 11 tool that matches the job

How to screenshot part of the screen
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose Rectangular, Freeform, Window or Full screen mode.
- For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the content. For a window snip, select the window.
- Use the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Choose Save, or press Ctrl + S, and select a file name, format and folder.
The shortcut is a clipboard workflow rather than an automatic file export. If you dismiss the notification, paste the image with Ctrl + V into Paint, Photos, Word or another image-capable application and save it there.
Use Snipping Tool without a shortcut
- Open Start and search for Snipping Tool.
- Select the capture mode beside New.
- Set a delay if you need time to open a menu or arrange a window.
- Select New, make the capture, then edit and save it.
How to save a full-screen screenshot directly
Press Windows + PrtScn. Windows saves a full-screen PNG in PicturesScreenshots. In File Explorer, open Pictures, then Screenshots. If OneDrive is backing up your Pictures folder, the effective path can also appear beneath your OneDrive folder.

This method captures every visible monitor as one full-screen image. Use Snipping Tool instead when you need one window, a region, a delay or annotations before saving.
Understand the Print Screen key
On current Windows 11 guidance, pressing PrtScn may open screen snipping instead of silently copying the whole screen. The behavior is controlled by Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Turn that setting on if you want PrtScn to launch the selection overlay.
- Turn it off if you prefer the key to copy the screen according to your keyboard and Windows configuration.
- Use Windows + PrtScn when you specifically want a saved full-screen file.
Alt + PrtScn copies the active window only. Because it uses the clipboard, paste it into an application before closing or replacing the clipboard contents.
Keyboards without PrtScn
Some compact keyboards omit a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on some hardware. The exact combination is device-dependent; check the keyboard manufacturer’s layout if it does not respond.

Open Snipping Tool first, then press Ctrl + PrtScn to bring up capture mode while the menu remains visible. Select the required mode and capture the menu. A delay set in Snipping Tool is another practical option for menus that need several seconds to open.
Edit, extract and share a screenshot
Open the capture in Snipping Tool from its notification or by opening the saved image. The editor includes pen, highlighter, shapes, eraser, crop and undo/redo controls. You can add text actions and share the result from the app.
Extract text and redact sensitive details
Use Text actions to recognize text in the image. Microsoft says this recognition is performed locally on the device. The same area can offer quick redaction of detected email addresses or phone numbers. Inspect the result before sharing: OCR can misread small, low-contrast or stylized text.
Continue video editing in Clipchamp
A video snip can be handed to Clipchamp for additional editing, including captions or audio. This is useful when the built-in recording is correct but needs narration, trimming or accessibility text.

Copilot+ PC-only functions
Perfect Screenshot and Color picker are limited to Copilot+ PCs according to Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance. Do not expect those controls on every Windows 11 computer.
Record part of the screen with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + R.
- Drag over the rectangular area to record.
- Select Start in the recording controls.
- Perform the actions you want to demonstrate.
- Select Stop when finished.
- Save the video from Snipping Tool. Microsoft documents MP4 output under
VideosScreen Recordingsby default.
This is the built-in choice for a short clip of a selected desktop area. It is not the same as Game Bar, which is designed for an app or game.
Use Xbox Game Bar for an app or game
Take a game or app screenshot
Press Windows + Alt + PrtScn. Game Bar saves a PNG in VideosCaptures.
Record a game or app
- Enable Xbox Game Bar in Settings if it is not already enabled.
- Open the game or app you want to capture.
- Press Windows + Alt + R to start recording.
- Press the same shortcut again to stop.
- Open
VideosCapturesto find the MP4.
Game Bar is an app/game capture route, so its shortcut should not be treated as a universal desktop recorder. For a general desktop region, use Snipping Tool’s video snip.

If a file is missing, open File Explorer and search for *.png or *.mp4, sort by date modified, and check whether Pictures or Videos has been redirected to OneDrive or another location.
Troubleshoot common Windows 11 capture problems
PrtScn opens a selection overlay
That is usually the Print Screen preference, not a broken keyboard. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Use Windows + PrtScn for a direct file regardless of the overlay preference.
The screenshot is not saved
Windows + Shift + S and Alt + PrtScn copy to the clipboard. Select the notification or paste into Paint and save. Only the Windows-plus-Print-Screen route automatically writes a file.
The shortcut does nothing
- Try the device’s Fn modifier or the documented Fn + Windows + Space Bar alternative.
- Confirm that another utility is not remapping Print Screen.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and use New to separate an app shortcut issue from a tool issue.
- For Game Bar, verify it is enabled and that the target is an app or game it can capture.
A menu closes before capture
Open Snipping Tool first and use Ctrl + PrtScn, or configure a delay before selecting New.

Video recording is unavailable
Use Windows + Shift + R for a rectangular Snipping Tool video snip. For an app or game, enable Xbox Game Bar and use Windows + Alt + R. These are different capture contexts.
