The cells did not run the game or control it like a human player; software converted selected game information into electrical stimulation and translated neural activity into game commands.
How can neurons play a computer game?
Cortical Labs’ CL1 is a biological-electronic computer: living neurons are grown in a nutrient-rich environment on a silicon chip fitted with electrodes. The electrodes can both stimulate the culture and record its electrical activity. Software links that activity to a simulated environment, creating a feedback loop.

From game state to neural stimulation
For the Doom demonstration, software represents selected information from the game as patterns of electrical stimulation delivered to the culture. The neurons receive those signals through the chip; they do not see a screen or receive the game as images in the way a person does.
From neural activity to game controls
Software records activity from the neurons and decodes it into commands such as moving or firing. Those commands affect the game, whose updated state can then be encoded into further stimulation. The biological culture therefore acts as a constrained controller in a software-driven loop.

What does “playing Doom” mean in practice?
The phrase describes the connection between the neural culture and the game, not a miniature brain independently understanding Doom. Reports characterize the behavior as exploratory and poor: activity could produce movement or firing without competent navigation. That is compatible with a system adapting within a designed feedback task; it is not evidence that the culture understands the game’s goals.
How is the Doom demonstration different from DishBrain?
The Doom demo is often discussed alongside DishBrain, but they are separate demonstrations with different cell counts, tasks, and evidence bases.

| System and date | Neural material | Task and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Cortical Labs Doom demonstration, reported in 2026 | About 200,000 human neurons, according to Cortical Labs and technology reporting. | A closed-loop demonstration connected to Doom. The public material and reporting support the demonstration, but a peer-reviewed Doom results paper was not identified in the available sources. |
| DishBrain, 2022 | About 800,000 brain cells from human and mouse sources, according to University College London’s summary. | Neural cultures interacted with a simplified Pong task through stimulation and decoded activity. The work was published in the peer-reviewed journal Neuron. |
The 800,000 figure belongs to the earlier mixed human-and-mouse DishBrain experiment; it is not the cell count for the Doom demonstration. The 2022 paper, by Kagan and colleagues, is titled “In vitro neurons learn and exhibit sentience when embodied in a simulated game-world.” Its authors’ use of “sentience” describes their interpretation of that experiment, not settled proof that the cells had subjective experience.
Does the demonstration show that the neurons are conscious?
No such conclusion is established by the cited Doom demonstration or the DishBrain Pong study. A culture that changes its activity in response to stimulation and feedback can show adaptive behavior without demonstrating subjective experience, human-like understanding, or general intelligence. The neurons are a living network of cells, not a complete brain or a person playing the game.

What is known—and what has not been established—about the Doom results?
The Doom-specific account is based on Cortical Labs’ public demonstration material and science and technology reporting. The stronger peer-reviewed foundation is the earlier 2022 DishBrain Pong study, not a Doom paper. The available Doom sources do not provide a fully audited training duration, score, survival rate, or replication count, so those performance measures cannot be stated reliably.
